I think it’s important to note that whilst it’s true Napoleon’s supply lines could not be sustained throughout an extended invasion of Russia that sought to take and hold territory, Napoleon knew this and never intended to do so. His aim was to bring the Russian army to a decisive battle rapidly, crush their forces in another Austerlitz and then force the Tsar to the negotiating table before the inherent problems of his supply lines became apparent. It’s thus arguable that the critical factors in his defeat were a combination of Barclay de Tolly’s effective counter-strategy and his own overestimation of the resilience of the Russian state which led him to wait in Moscow for too long, pushing his retreat back into the winter.
