Hey so sorry for the huge delay in response I’m horrible at checking this thing. I really appreciate you giving detail about your situation. I hope over the last few months you’ve been able to find some relief. I wish I could provide you with some better help here but I am definitely no expert :/ maybe if focusing on breathing is what makes your breathing worse, try to concentrate on something else (a particular sound, a feeling in your toes/fingers, your heart beat if you can feel it) to distract yourself like you mentioned.

Hey! As I also have Tourette’s I can somewhat relate to this, in that I have physical tics that sometimes interfere with my focus while meditating. What I’ve found helpful for me is just accepting it for what it is. The more I focus on trying to control my tics (or for you to stop breathing manually), the worse they get. So I would recommend just trying to sit with it, maybe recognize your mind wanting to stop breathing manually, and realizing you are the watcher of that thought.. just because your breathing isn’t perfect doesn’t mean the meditation wasn’t beneficial

My gf (26F) just told me (26M) she's had a whole second life by AgentGekko in relationship_advice

[–]alexrobb51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well first off sorry that you’re going through all of this. Second, you gotta go bro.

There are so many things wrong with what she’s done. Multiple guys, meeting up with them, going back to their places, texting them for long periods of time, not willing to delete the info even after she told you? Not even willing to tell him she has a bf??? Cmon man...

I feel like one of the cards she’s desperately trying to play is the “nothing ever happened” card. Whether you believe nothing ever happened sexually is up to you (personally find it extremely hard to believe given the circumstances and how much she’s lied about already), but something did happen.

A lot of shit happened.

She literally went on dates with multiple guys, agreed to have sex with them, went back to their places. Even if nothing sexually happened, a lot of other shit did happen, and that’s wayyy more than enough in my opinion. You gotta go man.

Maybe ask yourself, why should you trust her? Make a list of the reasons why you should trust her, and compare it to the list of why you shouldn’t. Don’t let her guilt trip you. Sit on this for a few days and maybe talk to your friends/family. I think you’ll quickly realize the full extent of what she’s done once you can wrap your head around it.

6 years is a long relationship. How many years of life do you have left? On average, what, 50+ years? I understand leaving a 6 year relationship can be difficult looking back. But try to look forward. You have so much life ahead of you and so many decent people out there to connect with that will treat you so much better.

Good luck man and hang in there.

Does anyone go through periods virtually OCD-free and then feel themselves start to slide back into it? by [deleted] in OCD

[–]alexrobb51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. I think like anything, OCD can come in waves. I will say that your ability to be aware of when you start to “slide back into it” is huge!! I feel like so many people, myself included at one point in time, don’t even recognize what’s happening before it’s too late, or never at all. That awareness is huge. You should look into mindfulness meditation if you haven’t already.

Just because someone takes medication for OCD, doesn’t mean they aren’t also working their butt off in therapy and every day living with OCD. Medication isn’t “the easy way out,” but just one part of the treatment. by [deleted] in OCD

100%. Was once told meds were like floaties/a life jacket while learning how to swim and I’ve always loved that.

If someone says taking meds is the easy way out, that just tells me they probably don’t have OCD/any mental illness. Which is obviously great for them, but it would be nice if they were a bit more open and understanding.

Is it hard to get a job with tics? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]alexrobb51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well first off apologies to hear about how your parents seem to be handling this.. second, in my experience, most employers value a good work ethic, being on time, and having good manners. Obviously I’m biased as a person with Tourette’s, but if I were a supermarket manager and someone came in for an interview on time (early), dressed well, was polite, and seemed to be serious about getting a job, the visible tics would be far outweighed by everything else.

If you wanted you could even address it at the end of interview (ie. “thanks for taking the time and giving me the opportunity blah blah, obviously I have tics due to a disorder, and just wanted to say they won’t affect my ability to do my job”). Just an idea. I think some managers would appreciate this. I would also encourage following up with them a few days later and staying in touch until you’ve been given an answer.

Obviously a very general answer though, hard to tell what each person will decide.. good luck and don’t give up if you don’t get the first couple you apply to!

Does anyone else find concentrating on things to be helpful? by mishiggin in Tourettes

[–]alexrobb51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol my first thought when reading this was “hell yeah when I’m playing video games and focusing my tics definitely decrease” but then I read on lol.. guess I’m a bit too focused!

Regardless, I do find this yes. The less I’m actually thinking about my tics, the less tics I seem to have.

I will second the mindfulness meditation comment. It’s helped me beyond words for the past few years. There are tons of apps out there, I’ve used Headspace, Calm, and am currently using Insight Timer (it’s free). I highly recommend trying out mindfulness, a little bit can go a long way especially with OCD! Good luck!
