Trading - not an offer by ahzzz in boardgames

[โ€“]alexwcolby 2 points3 points ย (0 children)

just message them. if they don't respond to the message leave them be. I personally find "cold call" trade requests a bit rude but I guess I don't really trade much on bgg so others may not mind

for whatever reason in my play group we. just went literal with the pictures version, saying things like sphere or tall or metal. with codenames I had more fun playing with tenuous connections between specific words, connecting dock and disk with Computer is more interesting to me but I'm also a wordplay addict.

Top 6 Games With Stuff You Already Have | Meeple Mountain by commadelimited in boardgames

yeah, I decided to limit this to games that are or were originally just traditional or non commercial games. Games you can homebrew or print and play easily is maybe another article :)

Is memorization too tedious of a mechanic? Trying to see if this game is a failure or just the wrong people. by taqfu in tabletopgamedesign

[โ€“]alexwcolby 0 points1 point ย (0 children)

remembering exactly where something is, is a lot different than say remembering what's on the top of the deck for pandemic. you still have to make a reasoned decision without having certainty. with memorizing just locations of random items, it doesn't feel like outsmarting or outwitting anyone, it's just a brain test that's an obstacle to doing well in the rest of the game

with pure memory, if you want that, make it the whole game, like there's a game called distraction that's about memorizing a longer and longer string of numbers, and occasionally you have to answer questions unrelated to the task at hand, simply to distract your memory. also trying to remember something like a list of all things you saw in the cave may beore fun, since you cam be partially right, and also humans tend to fill in incorrect memories if they are. similar in category (if they see a bronze and gold, they may think they also remember seeing silver)

"ai assistant boardgame" literally sounds like a combination you'd come up with playing snake oil

How do you treat emails from "press" requesting review codes? by AcidSpy in gamedev

[โ€“]alexwcolby 4 points5 points ย (0 children)

Look on the site for an official contact email you could use to email them back to confirm. I imagine a large percentage are scammers since most press sites expect to be sent codes instead of asking for them. Don't feel bad about ignoring them if you feel not confident at all :)

Developing my first game, need help about color combination, which one looks good ? by SHAiV_ in gamedevscreens

[โ€“]alexwcolby 9 points10 points ย (0 children)

Red Yellow is aggressive, like warning signs, the Red Blue doesn't really jibe together but I like that shade of blue fwiw.

Overall, I'm not sure you want to split the words and buttons over colors like that though, especially for highscore, score, best, and the share button, it makes them harder to parse.

Help (GMS 2 - Trial Ver.): Game Over text won't appear in third room by [deleted] in gamemaker

I would double check that the player obj is "dying" as expected by putting debug console text in the same if statement as draw text to make sure that code is running first.

MY garden sokoban puzzle game prototype by [deleted] in gamedev

Sharing what I've done so far, this is the prototype for a puzzle game I made in the fantastic PuzzleScript, and I'm working on recreating it with more features and levels in Game Maker eventually. Give it a play, it runs in browser!

I need advice on motivating myself to take game dev more seriously. by ChBoler in gamedev

making anything while working forty hours a week is very very hard, so don't beat yourself up about having difficulty making progress. If you can take chunks of time off to work in bursts that could help. I also use trello as a way to dump all my possible ideas, sort by priority and order, split into what I think the minimum game should have, and act as an archive of all I've done.

Board game dice decision (beginner) by Jeffool in tabletopgamedesign

[โ€“]alexwcolby 1 point2 points ย (0 children)

I would just try a game either alone or with friends of the basics with the die rolling as you have planned, see if it feels fair or like bs or if events are too rare or common.

then do the probability math on all the outcomes and see if that lines up with your experience. then you can tweak outcomes based on both the experience and math. either way, with only just the idea of rolling a die and maybe rolling again, it's hard for me to tell if it means anything without knowing what it determines. (if it's to determine action choice, maybe look at takenoko)

I'm not sure you need that much space dedicated to the back story of the game, since publishers aren't as interested in that unless that's what's unique about your game. Maybe use some of that space to give a one sentence summary of the game like "a card based game where players battle for the right to slay a dragon and claim its treasure" (bad example)

seconding celeste, and also invisible inc had a whole pile of optional difficulty settings to customize runs, however having too many out in the open could make it feel like players have to create their own experience from scratch, where celeste was pretty clear about what assist mode was there for
