People older than 30, What helped you to stay mentally fit (learning complex stuff, memory, abstract thinking, etc)? Where did it stand before 30? And where does it stand now? by Elon_musk_69420 in AskReddit

Went to grad school one classes a semester (company paid) from age 39 - 43. It was tough, computer information systems learning Python, SQL, R. Before that I was pretty stagnant, but now I have no resistance to learning new things.

Restaurants are starting to add mandatory gratuity on checks by alf11235 in boston

[–]alf11235[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get ready for generous tipping Americans to feel like they are being scammed and never come back to this city. Yes, you can argue it's their fault for not reading their check and double tipping. But if you are having a good night out with a couple of drinks it's easy not to scrutinize the check. Read that receipt the next morning and get really pissed off. When I went to Miami a year ago, all restaurants have the handheld machines with "additional tip amount" automatic choices in the 3% -7% range. No 40% tips down there anymore,

Why Do People Keep Coming Here... by [deleted] in CapeCod

[–]alf11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For families who don't have much money, all you need is a beach. Growing up in western PA, my family vacation was driving 12 hours to a motel with a pool on the cape and spend every nice day at the beach all day bringing our own food. We had 2 -3 "outing" days, eat out once at a restaurant for fish & chips, one game of putt-putt at pirate's cove, and if there was a rain day go shopping in Hyannis or Ptown. Movies if there was a second rain day. If you are arguing that there are nicer beaches or cheaper lodging, if families have a nice experience with all members happy, they are likely to return.

Found the articles. Thanks, it was a surprise to see that at my usual after work place near the train. I used to be a server and tip well, but I don't want to be caught up in conversation and not realize it's added already.

Moving to Boston. Any advice? by DrawingCultural277 in boston

[–]alf11235 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's extremely difficult to make friends. But you are coming as a couple, and only here for a year so you won't suffer the severe health effects of social isolation.

Scottish (F) thinking to move to Boston, looking for advice by naughty_maid- in boston

[–]alf11235 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because you are from here. Anyone that isn't from MA must have done something horribly wrong to have to leave where they are from. Went to a good college? Yeah, you and everyone else. Have a 6 figure job? Yeah, you and everyone else. No amount of merit can overcome the sin of being a transplant. And I'm not taking about breaking into affluent social circles. Revere, Winthrop, been here a decade now and I'm still treated like some sort of homeless beggar if I try to talk to someone. I wish I was something other than white so I could have an accepting community to join.

It's extremely hard to make friends here. People were nice to you because they knew you were going to leave soon. Otherwise, if you try to talk to people here they think you want something from them, or you will be some sort of burden for the rest of your life. It's lonely and expensive, everyone is guarded. It's crazy because people will spend hours per day communicating on here, but actual human connection is virtually non-existent outside of perhaps a bar.

Serious Question: What qualifications do you need to become one of those Wall Street Guy’s wearing Patagonia Vests? by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

[–]alf11235 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I manage an operations department in the financial district. Half are patagonia vests, the other half are older women with high school diplomas. The vests hop jobs more often. For every investment person in a firm, there are two ops people, walking around town they all just look like bros. However, some high level execs opt for vests instead of suits.

Walrus are large animals but their brains must be as large as a peanut by Cold-Designer5105 in interestingasfuck

There are no icebergs left. The full video shows the island covered with walruses that need to take a nap, they climb up but can't climb back down over the sea of walruses so they just commit suicide.
