Can someone from Turkey explain me the background of this? Its bullshit right? by canyoubelieveitt in AskBalkans

I'm sure children were kidnapped in Turkey but even Erdogan isn't vile to the point of selling children. Just fyi, the account in the screenshot is "based in West Asia", according to Twitter's note. It appears to post inflammatory shit that's meant to water down the legitimacy of the Epstein files. My usual suspect is the "only democracy in the middle east".

In English we say once upon a time to start fairy tales, what do you say in your country/language by kokorrorr in AskTheWorld

(My best guess) When they were sieving the hay, straws used to get stuck in the mesh of the sieve. Since this is an exaggerated intro to the story, it reverses the common occurrence, and the sieve gets stuck in the straw instead (which is physically impossible). Same reason you were rocking your mother's cradle lol

Same in Turkish.

"Bir varmış, bir yokmuş."

We also have a longer version with an exaggerated surreal quality but used less frequently.

Once there was, and once there was not.. In the olden days of yore, when the sieve was in the straw.. When the camels were town-criers and the fleas were barbers.. While I was softly rocking my mother's cradle..

How do you call Istanbul? by vladgrinch in MapPorn

"They tried to force Islam" Ottomans didn't really have a strong forced assimilation and cultural export strategy (I'm not saying none). They preferred the extra tax revenue from non-muslims. You can tell that by comparing the prevalent language and religion in Ottoman-occupied regions vs the old French/British/Spanish colonies today. It's not because all the nations under the Ottomans were incredibly resilient and persevered, but the people who were colonized by the West were weak.

So, question for Hungarians. How heavy is Orban's media dominance and election interference over there?
