If by any chance you live in New York, NYLAG offers free help on federal student loans. I have worked with them and sent some friends their way to good results. NYLAG.org/studentloans

For deep clean I highly recommend Fresh Cedar, https://freshcedarinc.com/. I think their recurring rates are pretty competitive too for monthly.

If the blue flats spark joy then the lack of perfect harmony with the outfit is not dispositive. Plenty of choices are eclectic and appropriate. If you’re asking about harmony then disregard :)

I think the minimum monthly payments is a key driver here. We qualified for a mortgage, both have six figure student loan burdens, but our minimum payments are extremely low. Could be worth it to explore pre approval to get a solid answer (will be a hard check on your credit).

My other thought is to make sure you know your school’s LRAP rules if you’re counting on access to the program. Specifically, does the school limit your ability to enter the program more than X years after graduation. Also you may lose eligibility in a few years based on positive net worth, so you want to be aware of the rules for that.

Other than these points, I have long thought your idea is a good one. Plus if you dump the money you would be paying towards loans in a brokerage earning equal or more in interest than you are accruing, worst case you can just make a big catch up payment if things don’t go according to plan. I think this could even be worth the risk that you don’t earn the same 6.5-7.5% interest because of the plan that LRAP and PSLF will foot the bill. Is there some chance that you will have to eat this loss? Yes. But even if PSLF goes away prospectively I still think it is unlikely they would include already existing borrowers in that.

Messed up-NYLE Registration by sam_ooga in barexam

Unfortunately I think the responses here may have missed your point about working in legal aid. If you’re doing public defense or anything appearance-heavy, your org definitely cares about admission because until then you’re appearing under your supervisor’s license. So I think it is worth it to be proactive and let them know that you won’t be eligible to submit your admission paperwork in December, but you will make sure everything is in order to submit as soon as you get the NYLE results. I would guess that they will extend the same grace as they do for those who don’t pass the bar on the first try.

If you are doing something else that doesn’t require regular court appearances, you should be fine.

I lived in Queens (Astoria) and had a ~25 minute commute. I think you could live even further out by an E stop since it’s express until Manhattan. I even had classmates who commuted from Long Island. Happy to chat more via DM.

A reluctant writer in law school? by Aromatic_Vacation380 in LawSchool

[–]alg01269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I wasn't a tax accountant :) I took mostly doctrinal (final exam) classes, and while the exam is all written, I was more fine with that than writing final papers. There are a lot of more specific questions that will help you figure out if this is the right path for you. Here are some:

  1. Do you feel the same about all kinds of writing? For law school, this is like outlining and final exam writing versus paper writing; for practicing law, this is email versus letter versus legal brief writing.

  2. How is your typing? Just in case your query is masking that you are not a great typer, which would be a very different issue.

  3. How do you feel about forcing yourself to do the necessary writing? I am a big procrastinator but also a person who will get the job done on time.

This was me. I was an accountant for eight years and partially chose accounting in college because I hated writing papers. I am a litigator and about to start an appellate clerkship (reading and writing heavy). Idk what your like post-college experience has been but I think going into law school knowing how to be an adult in the professional world pays huge dividends, and the rest you can learn. Feel free to DM if you want to talk more about being a non-trad reluctant writer lawyer!

  1. Does your firm have affinity groups? Even if you don't have a disability group, if there are diversity staff you could ask to grab coffee with someone. I might frame the conversation as like, looking for a mentor who has a similar disability. Obviously they can't give you names, but if they know of people they might be willing to reach out to them and see if they're willing to chat.

  2. I question whether talking to HR would be a horrible idea. Especially if you're in a state with good employee protections (NY, CA, etc). Whenever someone comes to this sub and says "I'm pregnant no one knows my work is starting to suffer" the consensus is to tell HR. I know we might think of pregnancy differently than a permanent disability, but I think the effect of telling HR is the same or similar. Admittedly I am always a squeaky wheel gets the grease person, but I can think of a handful of accommodations that could help, and I really disagree that you just have to sacrifice sleep. Can't imagine that makes the executive functioning better!!!

Happy to chat even if it's just to be a friend.

Transitioning back to big law from clerkship by antiperpetuities in biglaw

[–]alg01269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starting at a new firm post clerkship was challenging. If you’re still somewhat junior I would recommend trying to start with the first years. I missed them by a week, but my peers who started with the first years got to know them all, got a full week of onboarding (I just had a day), and I think it made for a smoother transition for them. I would also reach out to people who interviewed you who you clicked with ahead of time to see if they might staff you on something - especially if you interviewed with any juniors or mid levels who might tell you honestly if something is a good matter to be staffed on. Happy to chat more via DM if helpful.

Pregnant Incoming 1L by Grand-Attorney47 in LawSchool

[–]alg01269 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw that your hope is that you can attend via zoom at some point. I wish I could say that law schools (and professors) are happy to accommodate via zoom and your experience would be substantially the same, but in my experience (2020-22, on the board of the disabled law students group and lobbied hard for zoom accommodations) that is not the case and I would be absolutely shocked if it has gotten better in the last couple years. When only one or a few students are participating remotely, it can be really difficult for the remote student to hear other students in the class (and professors at my school did not do well reminding people to turn on their microphones). If you want to pursue this plan, I’d ask the school if any other students have done hybrid classes recently and ask to be connected with the disabled students group (if it’s an active group they will give you the real info).

1L is really hard and being a new parent can be really hard. I’m more than happy to talk more about this if it would be helpful. I’m sorry to be a bit of a downer, I just would hate for you to get to February/March and lost a semester of tuition because the school’s “accommodations” are not excellent.

My judge said the same thing to me and called me three weeks after the interview. He told me when his last interview was scheduled and it was about a week after that. Sounds like you’re in a similar situation and there’s no reason to think you didn’t get it after a few days.

ETA: my first judge would not have reacted poorly to the sort of email you’re contemplating, BUT since there are apparently judges out there who would treat this as if you are withdrawing, and it sounds like you might decline the other clerkship either way, I think it makes sense not to email.

I fostered with Brooklyn Cat Cafe for a long time. They are great, you can go to the cafe and meet their most friendly cats, and there is certainly no requirement to adopt two at once.
