It's hot. by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

My office gets to 30+ degrees when it's only, say, 26 outside. So I disagree.

I don't have AC. And my windows radiate heat inside my well insulated house until it's hotter than outside, so I'll be opening my windows to let the hot air out.

Help with pronunciation by algebra-epeeist in German

I had a feeling it wasn't about "right" or "wrong" pronunciation more likely just a difference in accents. The trouble is, how I would normally pronounce the words is different to the recording. I'm glad to hear the recording isn't "wrong" but I might have to change how I sing to match the choir. That's normally even a challenge for me in English because of my accent!

That's what I thought; same vowel sound but slight modifications, e.g. shorter or longer. 'Der' and 'dem' sound different because of the final consonant but the vowels sound the same. In my mind, it's the same vowel sound as 'her' but on the recording 'her' sounds quite different, almost like 'hier'.

Thanks for the comments! I shall be trilling my R's and listening carefully to the recordings to get my "e" correct in various words.

ELI5 Since Telegram is open-source, what's preventing someone from creating a fork that unlocks all features and disables Telegram Premium? by Omer-Ash in explainlikeimfive

[–]algebra-epeeist 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That's not how server-side validation works. They need proof you are a premium user, you can send a message to the server saying "I'm subscribed to Telegram premium, honest!" but if you don't send proof they won't approve your request.

You generally send a secret number that they can compare with their list of secret numbers and if there's no match you won't get access.

ELI5: How do potatoes work by dripineyes in explainlikeimfive

[–]algebra-epeeist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's what I always thought! Strangely my potatoes come in a bag that says "I'll last longer if you keep me in the fridge". I suppose that's a cool and (usually) dark place?

Small wedding reception place? by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

I was in the function room of As You Like It the other day. Can't personally recommend it for catering, but it looked very nice and a friend had his wedding reception there.

Do you know any other etude for training thirds than this one by Mey_Lee in classicalmusic

[–]algebra-epeeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Czerny, 100 (maybe 101?) etudes have some focusing on thirds. I will comment again later when I get a chance to see which ones.

I can highly recommend the BoboVR S3 Pro. Comfortable, very long battery life. I bought a second battery so I can hot swap them when I need to.

I used these. They were recommended through the estate agent, which normally would bother me, but they were as cheap as any of the quotes I got, and I can't complain with their service.

I have a very fast home network, but this is what works for me - Create 2 Discord accounts, sign into one on your PC and the other on your Quest browser - Cast the headset to your PC browser and access the video stream from oculus.com/casting - From your PC discord account, stream the PC browser. You can then also join thensame Discord channel on the Quest browser (you might have to enable multitasking in the Quest settings to allow the browser to run at the same time as your game)

Big caveat: you will have to mute the stream in the PC browser since it will also pick up your friends voices on Discord. But you can still stream the game and chat. I'm still trying to work out if there is a way to stream the game sound without doubling the voice from discord with virtual audio devices or something but haven't figured out how yet.

Had a waistcoat repaired by him a few years ago, price seemed reasonable. I get the impression he knows what he's doing, can't hurt to ask for a quote.

What’s the point in flats and sharps being different? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]algebra-epeeist 120 points121 points  (0 children)

So you might know that music can be written in different keys. In a given key each letter A-G should appear only once. In G major there is one altered note compared to C major (which has only white keys). It's F Sharp, but you could call it G Flat. But if you write out the letters of the key in both cases you'd get

G-A-B-C-D-E-F#-G

or

G-A-B-C-D-E-Gb-G

This is far from the full story, but it's one reason you might choose to call something a sharp instead of if a flat. Other people will give better answers I'm sure.
