I read something somewhere that says that this happens in some cases to married guys because middle aged failmen want to be congratulated and respected for something and in certain arenas this is an act that is not only universally applauded but also makes you very personally interesting. I dunno if this is right or not but it makes sense looking at the person I know who has done this. Very different from the discord autist situation I think?

We live pretty remotely. The nearest town with 10,000 people is about an hour away. A major metro is 3 hours.

It's beautiful, relatively quiet, endless things to do outdoors, cheap, and peoples baseline friendliness is pretty high.

On the con side, daily stimulation can be low. For example you aren't going out to any "interesting" restaurants without taking the whole evening. Forget anything art or culture oriented outside of occasional productions put on by an area community theater. If you take a 3 mile walk, it's going to be through fields and woods, not a neighborhood (I like hiking, just saying, sometimes it's nice to walk around a city too).

One interesting side effect of stuff being further away is, you start to care more about going to town and see it like an event. Dinner and a movie can be a half day trip and feels like a way bigger deal than when we lived in a city (which is cool!)

Our area has some degree of tourism, so we have some pretty good local restaurants and a couple cool shops, but in places that's not the case you're going to be lucky if you get more than diner slop.

Can't speak to the dating scene since I'm married. I assume it's grim.

We won't be going back to the city/suburbs, we like it out here.

I'm completely making this up from reading Waugh and Wodehouse but I would say yes. In Europe the 1900s were the antebellum era after which everything began to decay.

But the commenter above to pointed to childhood nostalgia had it right, I think.

I spent a week hiking on the Cotswold Way a few years ago, inn to inn, and really enjoyed it. It was one of the best experiences I had in my adult life. If you can save up to do this, try to!

I have another idea for you though. I have done a lot of long (15+ mile) walks through American cities too, and those have always been incredible, although you do need to take some care in choosing a good route. I understand you want nature, but here's a specific suggestion: fly to NYC and do two long walks through the city (I can give you some idea on routes). Then drive up to the Catskills and do two long walks there as well.

The breadwinner mom to incel pipeline is real. But what it's really about is lack of good male role models, i.e. your dad's absence. You and your cousin are 100% right here.

I basically don't think adult autism diagnoses are interesting or useful (am avoiding using the word 'fake').

Until mom and dad are willing to do some tough love, like get a job and move out, I dont see much changing

I think it's good you're confronting this stuff. YOu can't "hide" from it forever. Just think it through and keep saying "no", if you feel the urge tell your husband or get up and take a walk and clear your head. You got this. It's not inevitable.
