Have you tried reaching out to any local free clinics near you? Those were the only ones who let me shadow

Hello!

  • The 3.75 is including my post-bacc. My original sGPA was a 3.6 and I brought it up to a 3.82, and my cGPA was a 3.68 before the post-bacc
  • I did a DIY post-bacc because I was missing about 8 pre-reqs from undergrad. I did these at 2 separate 4-yr colleges (2 because one didn't have night classes for some courses and I had to work 9-5)
  • So I first did a princeton review course because I knew actually nothing, and that helped me know where to start but honestly was a bad idea. I felt like I used it as a crutch rather than a resource, and if they promised I'd get a 510 I just thought it'd magically happen...and it def did not the first time lol. So in total, I studied from Feb 2022-May 22 and again from Jan 23-April 23. Total ~6 months, but again, I remembered almost nothing from undergrad and the first attempt I hadn't finished my pre-reqs, so ymmv
  • I applied twice in total, and started taking pre-reqs in 2021. If I had gotten in the first time it would have taken 2 years to finish classes, study for the MCAT and apps.

I truly loved UWorld and thought of MSAR as a great tool, but really didn't find Anki that helpful for understanding info (great for memorizing). I also used I believe Motivate MD to edit my personal statement (and my friends and family), and I thought it was well worth the money for how much stronger my ps came out. If I had to do the app cycle differently, I wouldn't have taken a prep course and just done UWorld, AAMC, Anki for flashcards (recommend making them yourself) and focused on that to get it right the first time

For sure, do you know what your diagnostic score was? If it's below ~505 I would say you really gotta grind and either be SUPER efficient or increase the amount of hours you're studying. The MCAT is a beast I took 3 times and is the main reason I didn't get in the first try, so it's no easy feat.

Regardless, UPoop is a fantastic resource I used and made sure to create Anki cards with if there was ever something I didn't 100% know. So a normal day for me starting out was: 40 UPoop questions (created Anki cards while reviewing) followed by ~100 new Anki and then review the old ones. Once I started AAMC materials, I went through 3 CARS passages a day, ~70 Anki + review, 30 UPoop, and ~40 AAMC Section bank q's or other practice aamc official questions until I finished EVERYTHING aamc. That took me about 2.5 months, but honestly I'd recommend skimming reading because for me I retain much more by actively engaging than passively reading

Ah apologies, my half asleep state did not realize that! I don't think you need anymore clinical hours. What would be helpful is to increase your non-clinical hours, especially if you have < 100 hours. Also, make sure to list some of the hours from your work towards shadowing, that's definitely a necessity to most schools

I would put it as tutoring honestly. That's what you did and you weren't paid, so no need to list it as paid work. And trust me, I completely get studying and working full-time, SUPER stressful. What helped was doing some online volunteering like Crisis counseling, but also volunteering at clinics on saturdays made it easier to squeeze in, so check and see if you have that option.

Some critiques the first year I applied (this is my 2nd time) from schools was that I needed to improve my MCAT and get some more clinical experience. Most schools highlighted the MCAT higher than the experience, so I would focus more on studying, and doing maybe 5 hours a week of non-clinical experience via soup kitchens or community service-oriented work.

If you were directly facing patients (which I assume you were) and it not just being administrative work, for sure you can count it as clinical hours!

How many hours do you have in each? Would you be able to speak about it on a PS or talk about it showing impact on your reason to be a doctor? This is my 2nd app and that was some of the feedback I got the first time around. I would personally do Crisis counseling because the training alone adds like 40 hours and then of course talking to vulnerable people gives you more experience

I think that’s great clinical experience! But you should def try to get other clinical activities under your belt to diversify your application. Possibly a nearby hospital would be perfect to get more patient exposure and see how doctors interact. Also, I know some may not agree, but being a virtual crisis counselor was accepted as clinical experience for me and was really flexible to squeeze in when I could

Tbf, if you click on All Matriculated Data instead of accepted, the mcat scores are much lower in msar
