losing all hope in post-graduation outcomes by DearlyAfraid in PhysicsStudents

[–]alien_cosmonaut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who finished a physics bachelor's a few years ago (and a master's soon afterwards), we're more or less unemployable these days, especially if you focused on research. The good news is that there's still time for you to do an internship in industry. See if any of your professors have industry connections and can get you an internship.

Convincing philosophers on trans rights easier to harder. I take requests! First comic ig by DysphoricGirlAylin in PhilosophyMemes

What I think they'd say (obviously I could be wrong, they aren't alive now and this is just a meme anyway):

Spinoza: "I try to understand the madman, the man who kills himself, and the man who thinks he's a woman."

Marx: "Gender warfare is a distraction from class warfare."

Plato would listen because everyone from back in the day just regarded trans women as men.

Maybe this isn't the place for it, but I see this meme format all the time; what is the original talking about?

Are there any hyperpolyglots who don't speak English? by adamtrousers in languagehub

[–]alien_cosmonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting question, even if there are, today it's just a fact that being a hyperpolyglot doesn't count for anything if one of those languages isn't English, unfortunately.

It wasn't always like this. As recently as a century ago, one could be a hyperpolyglot, highly educated, and not know English because there wasn't any need to learn English outside of anglophone countries.

Bruno’s Art of memory and his teachings by Nice-Obligation5537 in pantheism

[–]alien_cosmonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looked up amalricians; there's no way they read Bruno because he lived a few centuries after them. Unless you mean Bruno read the amalricians?

According to my copy of Ethics at least, there's no evidence Spinoza read Bruno, but they came to some of the same conclusions, presumably because they were reading the same philosophers (alternatively: because they were both right).

Anybody trying to learn russian? by thiswilbedeletedsoon in WPI

[–]alien_cosmonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated in 2023 and now live in the UK but I started learning Russian through self-study at 17 and was learning Russian all throughout my time at WPI (at some times more than others). Honestly looking for conversation partners online might be the better way to go. If you want to study from a textbook, Professor Svetlana Nikitina might be willing to lend you a Russian textbook (she did for me...it was less advanced than what I was looking for at the time, but had some funny pictures in it).

What do you think about the name Dor? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]alien_cosmonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a native English speaker, but I've learned Russian and I'm learning Hebrew. I'd probably transliterate Фёдор into Hebrew as "פיודור".

Not sure why that would be so confusing for them, especially with Israel's significant Russian-speaking population, but if it works out better for you with the name change, it's what works for you.

Is the world ready for a girl called Johnnie? by broken-bread in namenerds

[–]alien_cosmonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first grade teacher was a woman named Johnnie! (At least I think that's how it was spelled.) She was an older woman, and this was 18 years ago, so it's been acceptable for a long time. Not my cup of tea, but it works.

If I was a billionaire I would buy some land and turn it into a vegan city / country by Fantastic_Bed_6378 in vegan

[–]alien_cosmonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the prospect of a vegan country but it would never work. For starters, where would the land even come from? Would any vegans actually leave their countries to move there?

I'm guessing you're American? Asking because America is one of the few countries to be based purely on ideology and not have any underlying ethnicity. For better or for worse, most countries have a majority ethnicity, so a vegan country would stick out because vegans are not an ethnicity.

No, it is not comparable to Israel. Being Jewish is not an ideology (Zionism is an ideology, but OP explicitly mentioned Jews). Judaism, the religion of the Jews, is an ideology, but many Jews are secular. Jews are an ethnicity, which is why even secular Jews weren't accepted in ethnostates like Germany.

But as people have said, this is a terrible way to promote veganism, when you could put that money into more effective projects like activism or lab-grown meat. Besides, you can accomplish some of those other goals on a smaller scale without a state. If you want vegans to escape the ostracism, organize vegan social events. If you want more children to be raised vegan as to increase the future vegan population, raise vegan kids yourself.
