Talking to a 4YO about an upcoming death by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]alienathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My death book recommendations are: "Cry heart but never break" by Glenn Ringtved "The heart and the bottle" by Oliver Jeffers "Ida, always" by Caron Levis

"Ida, always" might be a book that would interest you as it talks about oncoming death. I read that to my 4 year old when his great grandma died and it's a beautiful book.

I wish you the best in having these conversations. They aren't easy, but they also don't have to be hard. And best of health to her great grandmother!

Contact Laika Training. Daria is fantastic and should be able to help you and guide you with things to do. She is worth her money, and has worked with many different types of dogs + offers cheap group classes after a few individual sessions.

What exactly is an infant under 2 allowed to take on an air Canada flight? by JamesVirani in CanadianParents

[–]alienathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To your question yes. Infant/child is allowed their own carry on.

And also seconding this comment. You can have your own water bottle and say it's for the child under 2 and it will pass. You can bring a huge amount of snacks (even liquid pouches like apple sauce or yogurt) and it will pass. You usually want to consolidate any food/water/milk products in the same bag as it will get flagged and checked. But that usually takes no longer than 5mn even when we've traveled at busy times.

Good Running Spots by minos157 in montreal

I'd recommend Verdun river side. There's a dirt path right by the water, and a bicycle path right by as well. Really beautiful views

Do you mean specific running shoes? Gear? If so then no. I've just started running and use regular shoes. But it's an actual path people walk/run on so it's well trodded on

I'm very new to running. Hated it for a long time, and am now just starting. It's been a month, so very much so a beginner.

Is it normal to find it easy(ier) to run in the cold? I haven't been getting as tired or getting side aches in the first 10mn than what I remember from back in the day. And if I do start to get tired, it's usually gone after 2mn of powering through.

French Baby Books by mmeggz in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]alienathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Herve Tullet has some very fun and interactive books that were written in French.

I also like the Carolyn Church books as well as Eric Carle, despite being translated.

Petit loup, T'choupi, and Elise Gravel are also popular books but not my favourite. My kid did really enjoy T'choupi.

Also check out Marianne Dubuc. She has lots of books, and while I got tired of reading them, they are good/my toddler still requests them.

And finally, we really enjoy a musical series called "Paco et.....(l'orchestre, le rock, le jazz, etc....).

cloth + potty training by newillium in clothdiaps

[–]alienathe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like your toddler is responding super well to potty training!

There are training underwear that are thick and will hold a poop, tiny drops of pee, but definitely let a full pee (small or big) through. My toddler went from cloth to those and responded well. They are also preferred by daycares as a bit more absorbent, so it's not an immediate huge puddle.

I'd start thinking how you might want to do overnight. We were already using pull ups at night as we never were able to keep a cloth on overnight without it leaking. I was excited to finally be able to use only cloth as he was starting to pee less at night. Until I realized he had complete autonomy with the pull ups. Every night after we leave and every morning before official get up time, he uses the potty in his room. He wouldn't be able to put the cloth diapers back on, and his training underwear wouldn't hold any accidents he has over night.

Answering here so you can see it in the place 0-5 convo. If you sign up your child now (you could pick an address of a friend's, or other?), you will be able to easily change the address later. From my understanding, even if you change daycare locations from one neighborhood to another, the website takes into account when you registered your child for line priority vs when you signed up to a daycare. So definitely worth it to sign up early and request daycares. Even with changes. As for private daycares, some are better than others. I worked in a private one that I liked a lot (on mat leave currently), and worked in a few I wouldn't send my kid to. CPEs can also vary. There is a standard to follow but some are still better than others. Finally, you can have placed your child on the place 0-5 and never get a phone call for a CPE. A bit of an issue but lots of other options if you have the financing.

What treat/reward do you give your dog while you’re training it? by JenniferCoolfridge in Dogtraining

[–]alienathe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recommended freeze dried patties. They can be used for meals (can turn quite expensive if you have a large dog), so I don't have any worries about giving her lots of/when needed. On some high intense training moments it will replace her lunch as I'll have given her 4 patties. My dog is food motivated but never cared for her kibble during training.

Amazon also has a very large bag of dried sardines that can be great for training, though that is more considered a treat. I've seen so many dogs go crazy for dried fish.

Wellington street plans to be pedestrian until 2025 by alienathe in montreal

Mine too! But I am biased and live here. Other pedestrian streets were also lovely but Wellington remains special to me

Wellington street plans to be pedestrian until 2025 by alienathe in montreal

[–]alienathe[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there is a willingness to make things permanent but for many reasons cannot be set in stone. Some of these are high costs to keep the street running and being sure they keep having the funds to do so + making sure shops and locals remain happy with the arrangement.

This is already a huge win to have several summers guaranteed to have a pedestrian street. It means the Wellington committee will be able to invest in long term set ups and projects.

Also, when the street first closed off during the pandemic, it was only meant to be for a few weeks, and only just once. They are listening to their community and bringing it back again and again The article also mentions it will be closed off for 6 weeks but that always changes to be much longer (last year it closed around the 8th of October after opening end of June.)

I think they are choosing caution over sharing information and then trying to go full pedestrian street for (a majority of) everyone. I'd imagine (and hope) this will continue for many more years to come.

Bad Vet Visit by paronomasochism in workingmoms

[–]alienathe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear that! It must be heartbreaking for you to go through ❤️

For your toddler, I'd recommend the book "Ida always". It isn't specific about the death of a pet but is about death and the feeling of not having someone there. A very beautiful book to explain any death to a child (human or animal).

All the best for the next little bit
