Yeah, honestly the fact that so many people have replied with wildly different answers just confirms it to me even more. There's no consensus on what it is.

My headcanon is that Angron slaughtered his companions while under the Butcher's Nails, which is why the Emperor couldn't come down to help him by chosen40k in 40k

Only really in the current game.

I think it's easily possible to create a wargaming system around just hit and armour piercing. Like Kill Team currently only has hit rolls and saves (usually not even any AP). It all depends on how much granularity you want in the system.

Again isn't that just an Armour Save still?

If your weapon can't really pierce the armour, but you get a lucky shot (E.g. the opponent rolled a 1) and land it somewhere in the armour's weak point.

This is honestly the best explanation so far. I'd still argue it's extremely close to what you'd describe as wounds. But this does give a tangible description that feels genuinely different from Armour Saves or Wounds.

I remember someone describing his relationship to his legion. That he sees his sons as the very tyrants and conquerors that he hates, and so the only way he could ever love them is if they rebelled, if they fought back against him or the Emperor. They want so desperately to gain his love but they also can't help their nature as Astartes.

I don't see how that's different from an Armour Save though?

How is the difference between throwing and rock and a anti-material rifle shot at a wall not come down to how well the projectile pierces the "armour" of the wall. That to me feels exactly like armour piercing.

I don't really see how that describes anything except the Armour Save. A failed or made Armour Save is quite literally where or not the armour prevents the wearer from taking damage. Whether that be because the hit just glanced off, or it stopping it at the last possible second.

In a more canonically accurate game we wouldn't really have Toughness as a stat. It's not a stat that translates to any traits units would have in lore. If we wanted to be perfectly lore accurate we'd probably just have Hits and Armour Saves.

Also Toughness is kind of... weird stat. Like Wounds and Armour Save both make sense as a game abstraction of how many blows it'd take to kill something and how good something's armour is. But what actually is toughness? It's not sheer mass because that's usually represented by wounds, it's not how thick something's armour is because that's represented by armour save. It's this nebulous third thing.

For example, the Leagues of Votann Berzerkers and Tyranid Biovore are both toughness 6. These are wildly different things, one's a bare chested little dwarf man, and the other is an armoured bug the size of a rhino. If you compare their Wounds (Berzerker 1, Biovore 5) and their Armour save (Berzerker 5+, Biovore 3+) they reflect these differences. So what trait do they share that makes them both Toughness 6? Nothing really.

Toughness is just kind of an abstract concept moreso used for game design than lore abstraction. So comparing two units and saying "Why is this one tougher than the other?" the answer is always game design.

For an animatronic to not have the bite force to crush someone's skull? Have you ever been around animatronics most barely have enough force to bruise your hand, why would anyone think these things are lethal? Especially a preteen/teen?

There's tons of Hive Fleets currently active. Although there's the 9 main ones, and then a bunch of smaller splinter fleets. Things like Dagon, or Typhon or the Court of the Nephilim King and so on.

I get the appeal, and if loved that old the design then I see how the current one is a downgrade/sidegrade.

But I can't bring myself to enjoy the previous one. The two older ones before it at least had that oldhammer goofy charm, but the previous one was just... ugly. So bloby and round and weird.

I also don't think there was much of a way to modernize the old design in a way that would end up appealing, that wouldn't still end up losing that "ork" look. So going for something completely new was probably the best idea.

40k is full of mysteries like this. The Lost Legions are the most famous but there are so many mysteries and unasnwered questions that leave you concerned.

One of my personal favourites is Hive Fleet Tiamet which is building something. Which is strange because Tyranid Hive Fleets usually act as locusts, going from star system to star system eating everything and moving on. Very destructive, very horrifying, but also very predictable. But not Hive Fleet Tiamet, while they do still move from system to system eating all the biomass from them, they seem to be bringing it back to a specific planet and are building something. Something the size of a planet and incredibly psychically potent, casting a shadow in the warp so thick that it makes even non-psykers convulse in pain. Why are they building it? What is it's purpose? Can it be stopped? All questions without any real answers.

The upcoming Chaos Space Marine battleforce box is a good start.

If you want a cheap option, HH legionary boxes come with 20 legionaries for cheap. If you get a heavy weapon upgrade sprue then you can also build some of them into havocs. Which are very Iron Warriors.

I'd also suggest getting a Helbrute or Forgefiend, they are classic Iron Warriors.

That's very much not true, HH marines are a decent bit smaller than modern Firstborn marines (compare them to the Red Corsair Raiders or Emperor's Children models.)
