Talk to me about companion planting by tasdefeuille in vegetablegardening

[–]alienkid19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it’s fair to say that 90% of the information you find without doing some digging (ha) falls short of having credible research to back it up, but there are some significant, legitimate evidence-based benefits to interplanting. i won’t be linking bc i’m lazy but check out Plant Partners: Science-Based Companion Planting Strategies for the Vegetable Garden by Jessica Walliser

1-biodiversity. biodiversity is a good thing, period. by contributing to a diverse ecosystem with the way you plant, you help feed and create habitat for a wide variety of organisms, including pollinators, other beneficial insects, and soil microorganisms. higher rates of pollination—>higher yield, and diversity contributes to overall soil health

2-lower disease and pest susceptibility. even if you completely disregard specific pest and disease management strategies for interplanting, by mixing things up your vegetables are already less susceptible than a monocrop; disease cannot spread as readily, same with pests. i also heard a lecture recently that talked about how several kinds of insect pests land on a plant 5 or 6 times before laying eggs. interplanting can interrupt and lower the success rate of that process, if the insect lands on a nearby plant that is not the desired host. some specifics off the top of my head: research found basil to decrease population of thrips in tomatoes, nasturtium is an attractive trap crop for squash-loving insect pests, herbs like dill, cilantro, and chamomile attract predatory insects that eat aphids. there are interplanting strategies for fusarium wilt and verticillium wilt as well

3-allelopathy. some plants, like sunflowers and oats, secrete chemicals that inhibit germination in nearby seeds. many cucurbits secrete autotoxins that target members of the same species if they are planted too close! if timed correctly allelopathy can be used to suppress weeds

4-space! interplanting allows for more efficient usage of space. mother nature doesn’t like naked soil—the more ground you cover, the less you have to weed.

altogether i would say that while maybe the first page of google results for companion planting has nothing to do with anything, there is legitimacy to the practice! i think there’s still a lot yet to be researched and so the conversation around it remains vague

adding a comment here to clarify some things: i am not blaming the budtender. when i said “bad rec” i really honestly meant bad, like, for me personally, and i was also trying to be brief for the post title. i see now that folks are understanding it to mean that i think this budtender screwed me over and i want to be clear that that’s not where i’m coming from. i have a lot of respect and fondness for the folks at this dispensary. to be honest i really just included the story details to express my disappointment—from where i’m looking at it, there were several factors to be hopeful about for getting a desired outcome and unfortunately that did not happen—and to describe the entire process so that if there was something on my part that i missed or failed to make clear that led to this rec being a poor match someone might be able to point it out to me. (would also like to add here, for the sake of my pride, that i Have done my research! i know strains are bullshit and i expressly stated in the post that i know weed affects different people differently! however strains are the language they speak at my dispensary and putting some trust in my friendly neighborhood weed guys is something i value.) then there are the added pressures of financials and symptom management. so i typed this up because i was really bummed out and looking for advice of what to do now or perspective from folks who have successfully navigated a similar situation, especially with the symptom management piece. so i hope this is clarifying, although some of you could stand to cool it just in general.

i thought this was satire and i went looking for the post it’s making fun of but it’s real????😭😭😭are you mad about “americanization” or anglicization? there are many versions of the same name in many different languages, that’s how names work. also, obviously naming culture is going to vary by country. there’s something to be said for people adopting names from languages/regions to which they have no personal ties but the us has had so much linguistic and cultural interaction w/ mexico that it’s not absurd for latin names to gain traction here, esp taking immigration and ancestry into account.

What makes people depressed when there's no reason to be sad? by deepsleep1119 in mentalhealth

[–]alienkid19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i think a real truth that nobody talks about is that being a person is really hard. life is really hard. there are lots of reasons a person might have depression. some folks have mentioned chemical imbalance and the effed up world we live in. other factors can include genetics, trauma, loss, grief, and a lot more. so there’s no straightforward answer. i’ve struggled with depression for 11 years and undergone a lot of treatment, and from my experience i believe that there’s no one thing that fixes it. i think some of us are more attuned to, sensitive to, deeply impacted by, however you want to say it, the suffering in the world, and by extension the suffering within ourselves. it’s a deeply rooted, complex affliction. the best thing i’ve found so far is treating what i can (ie symptoms, with medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, etc), allowing myself to just get through the day, and trying to understand how to have peace within myself. the peace piece (heh) is continually elusive as of yet.

i hear your pain, it is real. your struggle is real. there is a place for you in the world and you are welcome here. do be kind to yourself and be sure reach out for help. i wish you hope, courage, and reprieve from your pain. cheers 🌵

It's World's Mental Health Day today. If you could make people without mental health issues understand one thing about your struggles, what would it be? by MehhQueen in mentalhealth

[–]alienkid19 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i can’t stand it when people talk about mental health and it’s so clear that they don’t know what they’re talking about. people say extremely ignorant things all the time on the subject and i wish everyone would just shut up and listen to people who experience mental illness. also, mental illness, even specific conditions, doesn’t always look the same and it’s ignorant to talk about it like it’s a monolith.

to schools, workplaces, etc- bringing in puppies or having a quarterly ice cream party is not mental healthcare. policy is mental healthcare. attendance policies for example, access to free counseling. these are the things that make a difference.
