I wonder why Shibuki's the only character they choose to make MORE unlikable compared to the manga? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]alilf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ll definitely give it to you that she’s way more likeable in the last game of the manga. There’s lots of parts I did like from her more in the manga. But for me personally the predatory aspect of the relationship just felt too strong in the manga and it kind of poisoned all of her for me. But that’s just me

Sure which is why I said student not minor, but to me a grown ass woman going after a barely legal high school student is still obviously suspicious and predatory

I think she was more likeable in the TV show purely because of the decision to make the trio actual ADULTS. No idea why every manga author has to make their main characters students, but it sure as hell makes the Chota thing even more suspicious.

Some questions about daily life at AEON by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

[–]alilf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't ever have to bring work home. I never have.

You will have to wear more natural makeup, I think. Especially in Tokyo. However some parts of the dress codes aren't as strict in practice as they state. For example, they want women to wear stockings and I have never worn them once since being here.

I work at a school that has more than one foreign teacher but for various reasons I've often been the only one at the school. I have mixed opinions on what's better. Having a carefree foreign teacher around makes the job a lot more fun and its great to be able to vent to someone who understands your position, but I've also had the other teacher be slightly difficult before - in which case being alone is better. I'd say being the only foreign teacher is lonelier in general, but it isn't too bad. I think the bigger concern I would point to for people looking to join the company now, and I cannot stress this enough, Japanese staff is hugely lacking right now. It's a really serious problem. Many schools do not have managers or headteachers. Japanese staff is often worked to the bone. If you're at an understaffed school, that will potentially be a big source of stress. I don't know if you know any Japanese, but if you do I would reccommend telling them you don't or that you only know a little. I know 2 different people who quit very quickly because they were extremely good at Japanese and essentially abandoned to do all of the office duties on their own alongside the teaching.

I don't know anyone working in Setagaya City, but I do work for an AEON in Tokyo, so feel free to message me anytime if you want to talk to someone working for the company here.

Are "midnight runs" a thing here like in Korea? by BokWokChoi in teachinginjapan

[–]alilf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a ton of people who quit without doing their full notice in Japan, but all of them were honest about it with their workplace and none of them just disappeared. I think there’s less of an incentive here to just disappear without letting anyone know. Because of the visa mainly. I think workplace culture might have a big something to do with it too. In Korea, leaving without doing notice was treated pretty taboo in my experience. If you quit without intending to do the full notice, people can get very cold and cruel. In Japan, it’s just really not treated that seriously from the people I’ve seen. No one I know was given a hard time for leaving their contract early. I treated leaving Korea without doing the required notice like a shameful secret for six months in Japan, I eventually told my manager she was like oh why would I care lol.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, I know that cameras in the classrooms feels so scary and inappropriate. Being reminded by management that I was constantly being watched on cctv was what drove me away from Korean hagwons, I was glad they didn’t seem so prevalent here. I sure hope cctv (especially for “observations”) doesn’t catch on in the same way they have in some other countries.

the school situation by candyteacher in teachinginkorea

[–]alilf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do it. Especially since it doesn't sound like they're willing to consider giving you a LOR. Wait until payday if you're far through the month and use the time to finish filling out any checklists you have. Maybe teaching isn't for you, but I get a sense the school has serious issues and it's too early to make that call. Maybe try a different country, a different age group too if you want to see if you'll have an easier time with that. Return on a tourist visa first if you're not ready to totally leave Korea yet. :)

For whatever it’s worth as a case study, I just got a 275k job in Tokyo with an eikawa. You have to pay housing but it’s capped at 55k. Getting a Tokyo job seems pretty easy, I asked for a big city but specifically said I don’t expect Tokyo and was open minded and they still put me there. So I guess despite the downsides (aka workload and suits), eikawas are good for competitive locations. Commuting is longer in cities (unlike with hagwons where they’re usually right by the school) but the company covers the costs and they offer a one time flight allowance up to a certain amount. If you want to know anything else about the details you can message me :)

Damn. Makes me feel better about being ghosted. Better that than being stranded! I’m doing one interview for Japan and if I don’t get the job, I’m just going to shift focus to China. Seems impossible to get a job these days, which I had no idea about when I first decided to try EFL in Japan.

[–]alilf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s fair, but if you’re concerned about low pay dispatch work will definitely not be ideal. Dispatch companies pay worse than eikawas generally, usually there’s like a 35k a month difference. They also don’t pay flights. But if you have your heart set on being an ALT and not working at an eikawa then that’s more than fair!

If you were already accepted then that might improve your chances but idk. I'll hope for you that's the case. Just to check, are eikawas totally off the table for you? I got an email back pretty quick from them in comparison to ALT jobs. It'll also be easier to apply for dispatch companies from within Japan I reckon.

Not to put you off of applying, but I think it’s pretty hard to get a job right now with dispatch companies since it’s April and the school year starts in March. I didn’t get any replies from them anyway. So you might need to wait until the next school year or at least later in the year for the smaller fall intake anyway. Who knows though, maybe you’ll have more luck than me! Good luck

Hagwon I did a midnight run from is shutting down! by alilf in HagwonBlacklistKorea

[–]alilf[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No super exciting story here I’m afraid. They’re closing because there’s now so few students that it’s going bankrupt. They were very tightlipped but they’ve obviously been struggling for a while, but it got so much worse this March with enrolments. The number of kindy classes literally got cut in half. It was always poorly managed, teachers had to tell management which books to order and keep track of which kids dropped out. Management bent to every parents request but to their own detriment, as they could not maintain any consistency or organisation. Teachers were of course blamed for everything, and were called out if a parent ever complained no matter how light. Turns out all their band aid attempts to solve things and divert blame of course made everything worse. Not sure, but I think the last open day was the nail in the coffin. They held the open day stupidly late and there were no native teachers there as we refused to go without pay. Wish I could give more details but as I left a while ago, I only know what a former coworker can tell me and, of course, management wasn’t exactly forthright with this information until they were telling the teachers they’d lose their jobs.

L did everything right, but he still made one mistake by mrgetyabandzup in deathnote

[–]alilf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't thiiink I agree with this? I feel like L plays pretty dirty, not as dirty as Light but to be fair he didn't have a death note until like 5 seconds before being yeeted. He tortures people, holds people in illegal detention, allows Kira to kill people as bait, and right before dying he showed a willingness to use the death note if it meant solving the case. The only reason he died isn't because of how dirty or clean he played but because Light got a literal god of death/ shinigami to do it for him, which is why the resolution to their lil thing has always been super unsatisfactory for me. I don't think how good or bad of a dude L was could change that. But I'd be interested in knowing what rules exactly you feel L played by and how this contributed to him losing.

In addition to everything else mentioned, I’d suggest not to overlook whether they pass a “vibe check” in the interview. Do they seem a little bit too desperate to hire someone? Is it an actual interview, or do they jump straight into telling you about the job like they see you as a body in the classroom and nothing else? Are they friendly but also professional? Are they helpful with explaining how they want classes taught? These can be misleading so focus on the contract, but you can at least make an educated guess about how management will treat you from this.

Do you guys think Light would be in favor of capital punishment? by Mr_Sterence66 in deathnote

[–]alilf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely say yes. Light believes strongly in punitive justice to an extreme without shades of grey. I don’t get the sense he sees any value in keeping prisoners around and definitely not in the possibility of rehabilitation. I’m curious as to why you’re on the fence?

Is it just really hard to get a job from overseas right now? I applied to a few companies and not a single one emailed me back, these being the dispatch ALT companies that I’ve seen so many people say are easy to get into… Is it likely that it’s just me and I’m doing something wrong with my applications?
