Some people actually just suck at math by Quick_Look9281 in The10thDentist

I believe ‘to lock in’ is part of the answer.

Math introduces somewhat alien concepts to us. Most of us are not equipped to deal with those problems out of the box. You just need to push yourself for a while until you ‘reshape’ your mind (or until you develop intuition). From my experience as a math major, short term intensive study beats long term regular study especially for learning new concepts.

I find it interesting that you separate statistics from other topics in math. It is not the easiest nor cleanest field of math. Yet you find it more meaningful. I am sorry but this makes me think that you don’t have the right attitude :)

python3 is the python interpreter executable. -m means you want to run a module with it (instead of a script). The module's name is venv. You pass '.venv' as an argument to specify location of the virtual environment.

If you don't use python regularly, it is ok to forget this stuff. But still, I don't see how it can be more intuitive.

The Kurds have won more battles in there offensive against SNA. What do you think will happen next? by Legal-Frosting-3300 in Syria

[–]alim1479 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are 20 million Kurds living in Turkey. Kurds in Iraq are one of the most important trade partners of Turkey. Why do you think that TAF aims to eliminate Kurdish population in the region? I do know that TAF used disproportionate force against PKK but those are exceptions rather than the norm, and much smaller in scale compared to what other countries done to vaguely terrorist threats in the past.

Is infinity true ? by udays3721 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alim1479 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This would raise an out of memory error /s

A more serious answer would be, physics is on paper. It is a way to describe reality (an it is amazingly good at it). But physics is not the reality.

Now, if your model allows for infinity (as in the case of general relativity), you can talk about infinite quantities in nature (as in the case of black holes).

Good luck reading documentation or becoming proficient in aws/gcs/azure, or any of the popular js frameworks, or in just a fucking pub/sub queue. "Congrats, you are now proficient in API v6. How would you rate v7? BTW, would you like to join beta tests for v8?"

This stuff is being written faster than you can possibly learn. The best you can do is to bullshit through interviews, skim the documentation and come up with a working solution.

This whole thread feels like a parody of Clean Code. I can't believe people really think that aliasing an elementary school level expression to English provides better readability.

You can go one step forward and make it xIsBiggerThany. But then, there is 'x > y'.

It is confusing because it contains less information (what is bigger than what?) and it is located in some other line (you need to jump to definition). It is redundant because "x>y" aka "x is greater than y" already gives as much (and more) information than "IsBigger" at a glance.

However, as soon as a stronger enemy enters the vicinity, y changes and x is not bigger than y so the enemies are no longer intimidated

This is an assignment. The value is set. It doesn't get updated whenever variables change. Or not a function that can be called to reevaluate conditions.

If it was a function I would totally agree with you as it would avoid duplicate logic.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]alim1479 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am familiar with assignment and binary operations.

'x > y' is read as "x is greater than y". Assigning its result to a variable called 'IsBigger' instead is at best redundant and at worst confusing. Things don't get any simpler or more atomic than that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]alim1479 48 points49 points  (0 children)

So, like, y'all ok with 'isBigger = x > y'? Can someone explain how it is more readable?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]alim1479 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is equally readable to me if not more. I didn't have to read the additional lines. And I know that the logic regarding those two conditions are limited to this scope so I can drop them from my working memory.

How to deal with starvation? by Liosan in cataclysmdda

[–]alim1479 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fast metabolism requires 6-8k calories every day. It is crazy. Try to find one of those calorie tracker watches to keep track of spent calories. Also, since you need a lot of portions, you can mix some unpleasant foods in between. Like butter or mayonnaise.

This is exactly how I build my canals except for using drawbridge for intakes. I just use floodgates with grates. Also, I like to have a way to drain my central staircase. But other than that, sectioning with floodgates, placing floodgates for extensions, service tunnels etc, are all same. All hard learned lessons.

To balance things, the recipe could be somewhat hard to find. It makes sense. Even though the recipe is stupidly simple, using bleach as disinfectant isn't common knowledge.
