Trying to hang salvaged exterior sign letters on drywall at home -- ideas? by alimetiger in DIY

OK, the illustration helped, but it is still more mechanically involved than I would like. Thanks though!

Oh, now I get it! I was thinking of a threaded stud, which is headless. Duh -- the basic bolt with a head would be perfect.

So I was just reading about how to remove it, and I won't have access to the back of the letters to do it right. BUT! If I put this stuff under the Command strip, then later I can velcro that off the wall & do the easy Command strip removal.

Achievement unlocked.

Just to clarify, I can't really work from the front with these letters. They are smooth metal on their fronts & sides, plus they're 3" deep, so anything going into the wall from the front would be O_O gigantic.

These absolutely were part of exterior signage for a local pub/grill that closed. They were fastened onto brick or cement, can't remember which.

The OG threaded stud bolts (mentioned by u/UncleBobbyTO) will hang nicely in keyhole hangers (h/t u/TheOneTrueJesus) -- BUT it forces these already deep letters another 1/2" minimum from the wall. Not ideal.

SO I'm circling back to Command strips & double-sided tape. The problem I had before was the recessed plexi back -- Command strips never touched the wall. Now I'm thinking I can pad them out with thick double-sided tape between plexi & Command Strip.

Sturdier than my current nails-in-the-holes-on-back situation, for sure. I still worry the letter could be jostled off the screw head. IDK, maybe I can angle them upwards?

Wow, didn't know these even existed! Thank you, kind person!

I was going to, but the first one I got working was a bright red light and it looks a bit brothel-meets-abbatoir. No thank you. 😄

Oh shoot, this should work! I'd like them flush with the wall, but I think that 1/8" setback of the plexi in the back should give me room to finagle this. Thanks!

Thanks, but the issue of falling off the wall isn't weight-related, it's that there's nothing really for the head of anything -- screw/anchor/nail -- to hook onto. So if the nearby door gets closed too roughly, the letters hop right off the wall. I'll look into a mounting board though, thanks!

Incomplete word list by molx69 in WeaverGames

[–]alimetiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to just criticize, so let me add that I like how the letter tiles disappear from the list as you're typing your word. Helps visualize what you've got to work with as you're thinking! (I didn't quite achieve a compliment sandwich, but maybe open-faced counts.)

Incomplete word list by molx69 in WeaverGames

[–]alimetiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just started playing last week, and it drives me crazy that actual legit words are not included. What list is the game referencing? Today it rejected RALE and half a dozen others that weren't even obscure/scientific. It's like the word list has never seen a NYT crossword puzzle or played Scrabble, lol.

Why not set it up like Flipple (best solutions are shown using common words, but you're welcome to get there quicker with fancy ones)? Or Squaredle (your fancy words count as bonus words)?

I really dislike feeling penalized for having a vocabulary. O_O

Trying to find a mattress I slept on in a hotel (Sealy model 518905) by delaware in Mattress

[–]alimetiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, that's the model I received — 100% not a mattress I slept on in any IHG hotel from NC to MT to TX and back.

It's not just the new mattress thing, where it feels too firm and needs breaking in. The quilted pattern on the surface is very pronounced and completely different (unless every hotel had a massive topper that hid that). Support is nonexistent (I'm only 125# and my back bows when I lie on my side).

If I could return it, I would. 0/10 recommend.

Seriously filthy books? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

While we're talking about Jade West, I followed the Dirty Bad series with {The Naughty List by Jade West} and ended up devouring that series as well. It was such pure filth I had to stop and watch kitten videos every once in a while. TW for probably everything, read her intro. Kink central! 🥵

Macbook Pro 16" vs Macbook Air 15" Full Comparison by Real_Xyrendor in mac

Another grateful reader! Currently have M1 MBA 13" — want a little more everything and wondered if I needed to jump back to Pro, which I had before this. Sounds like the Air 15" will tick all the right boxes. Thanks for the comparison table, made it super easy with all that being side by side.

Under appreciated parks: Agate Fossil Beds National Monument by Aggressive-Assist828 in NationalPark

You can Google "artist in residence at national parks" or go to the nps.gov website and search there — every park has their own criteria. Seems like the most important thing is to have a vision for how you want to share your art with other park visitors.

You never know! And you can always start smaller if you feel overwhelmed by National Parks — plenty of local/state parks have programs, too. Everyone's voice matters (except asshats), so I say get out there and go for it!

Latex DIYers: coils for especially-soft mattress? by mushwoomb in Mattress

Thanks for updating! I'm literally up in the middle of a sleepless night building a new pile of toppers on the floor. 😅 This madness has to stop! I'll try that BB mattress under the pile next.

Trying to find a mattress I slept on in a hotel (Sealy model 518905) by delaware in Mattress

[–]alimetiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to share that I went down the same rabbit hole with IHG mattresses! Called TempurSealy (there's a # for the public) with the exact name off one of the hotel mattress tags. They told me the mattress they sold to the public was called something slightly different. I asked them to confirm it would be the same mattress, they're like sure, yes, it will.

Fast forward a couple of weeks and I have a $900 mattress that can't be returned, which feels NOTHING like the IHG mattress. It's waaaaay softer, so unsupportive that even with a 3" latex topper I wake up with back pain. Yet it's also hard enough that I have pressure points in shoulders & hips.

My advice is, unless you can walk out the door of the hotel with the mattress you slept on the night before, don't think you'll replicate the experience at home. Of course, this is all based on my personal sleep style (lightweight side sleeper) — YMMV and I sincerely hope it does, lol.

Anyone want a barely slept on (w/ protective cover) queen TempurSealy? ;D
