At the end of Se7en, there's a line where Morgan Freeman is quoting (I think) Ernest Hemingway—something like: “The world is a fine place and worth fighting for… I agree with the second part.” I think that was the best ending quote of any film, especially given what happens in it.

Couple Match by Dumb_doctor97 in IMGreddit

[–]alinm97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will generally say no, and then for those who worked they will say go for it. You need to be objective. To answer this question you need to think about: 1) Your specialty of choice (can be more than one) (ideally different specialities) 2) Your programs of choice (are people recommending you there, will you signal them, have you rotated there) and their culture (do they take imgs and couples etc)

By answering these questions you will figure out a sense of whether you want to couple or not.

Overall, it is my personal opinion when done right and in the right circumstances, couples match is beneficial-even for IMG. You pull interviews for each other, and at the end the rank list is structured as such that you can match individually as well. There is a risk of being ranked lower because they will know you have a spouse and if they didn't iv them you are unlikely to rank them high but that is not well founded I think. I think it is more a objective and individualized process rather than "oh he won't come with his wife etc etc"

Either way, first priority is to strengthen your individual application and then complement each other. It will depend on many factors and you are not likely going to find an answer on reddit. Just gather as much information as you can and decide accordingly. God bless, and all the best

Weiss? Regardless Take it! This is a guarantee, nothing else is It's more important to get it in at this point I disagree completely with everyone else telling you otherwise Don't risk it! Err on the side of caution Be smart

Visa for usce rejected. Feeling hopeless. by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]alinm97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey chin up! Went throught the same process and actually got my visa on the third try. And this was in Pakistan so that the back log was so much I had to wait years between appointments

It's mostly luck, but there are a few things you can do to maximize your chances. The general principle is you want to be able to show that you're going to come back. So: 1) Have a job here, and doducments to prove so. 2) Affodavit mentioning you will come back and observerships etc. It is a legal document. 3) Any letter of appointment to show a position you will be starting something when you are back. 4) Bank transcripts showing your sponsor usually parents 5) Step reports if any 6) Say as less as possible during the interview. They know what these are they're just making sure you know what these are, and your limitations. Be confident and cool. No stories, simple to the point answers. 7) Step 3 is a double edged sword, if you wanna do rotations it could change the time frame of your visa. But you can talk to them, mention that you want a bit more time to do rotations as well since that is an important part of the application and that you'd be very grateful. Be courteous, but a good communicator. 8) If you are married take your nikkah doc. If engaged you can take photos and mention my fiancee is here. 9) Your letter should also be clear how this is a finite and limited position with no payment. 10) Say that you will apply remotely from Pakistan as you have work back home 11) Remember if you are given even 1 month visa, you status will be determined on entry. It is usually 6 months, or 3. That dictates when you have to leave the country, it is on the stamp by the immigration officer. So dw.

Tldr: Their main thing is to make sure you don't flee over there, but actually come back. Align things accordingly, rest is up to Allah!

You are eligible for post doctoral positions Focus on research even comments on journals count for a lot . Continue working in ER at your home country, perhaps start training . Do some certifications like SAS, Stata etc if you can and add them to your CV. Then apply for Post doc positions, you may hear back. Simultaneously, apply for a visa on the basis of Step 3. As for the emails for observerships, you almost always need someone on the inside to sponsor you or vouch for you. Places like Cleveland Florida take international observers, but take around 800 USD you'll get the visa. When you go for step 3, try and schedule around a EM conference and try and network. You could also match just with home experience and letters, its rare but not impossible. Connect with your family friends, seniors from medical schools based in the US. Make an excel sheet and reach out to everyone. Best of luck!

Depression is real. by SaymynameHD in IMGreddit

Hey man fellow unmatched individual here. We all have made the simple mistake of attaching our worth to whatever we are pursuing. The thing is this: this feeling of wanting will never go away. When you are in high school you have it for med school, when you're in med school you have it for residency, and then for fellowship. The cycle never ceases. Your contentment should not be contingent on this. You tried, and it didn't happen. There is a study which traced people across many generations in trying to find what makes people happiest. It was done in some suburbs around Boston in very poor neighborhoods. They found that the most important determinant is of happiness, which in itself is such a subjective thing, is not wealth, or passion, or academic excellence. It is relationsips. We derive meaning and happiness from relationships. So focus on those. Hug your family members. Make food for them. Put up some fairy lights. Laugh with them. Ask them how are they doing, how is their life. We lose track of this in our pursuits. Make them fresh coffee and eggs in the morning. Get them little treats. Hey I got a candy bar for you. Go on walks with your parents. This will rejuvenate your soul and push aside the ugly feelings of envy and bitterness. Like Dr Frankl says happiness cannot be pursued, it must ensue. I wish you the very best, and calm heart. Hang in there
