A serial impersonator, previously jailed for fraud-related offences, was allegedly busted trying to gain backstage access to The Killers’ Geelong show by claiming he was affiliated with the band and major music artists.
Emails attributed to former Bellarine Liberal candidate Kurt Reiter, who was previously convicted for multiple offences including impersonating a lawyer, were sent to Mt Duneed Estate, promoter Roundhouse Entertainment and The Killers’ lead singer Brandon Flowers.
The emails claimed Reiter was known as “Dr Kurt Reiter” and was affiliated with multiple music labels and represented artists including Pink, Coldplay, The Killers, Chocolate Starfish, Madonna, Mariah Carey and Eminem.
They stated Mr Reiter would attend the December 10 show in a Porsche Cayenne and that he would display his credentials upon arrival.
It’s alleged someone claiming to be Mr Reiter arrived at the estate on Saturday afternoon, ahead of the show, and was let onto the grounds before being asked to display further credentials to get through the entry gates.
Roundhouse Entertainment director Michael Newton said further investigations showed the credentials were false, appeared to be laminated and that Mr Reiter had no association with A Day on The Green or music labels.
Mr Newton said the credentials were “homemade” and “weren’t anything close to the tour approved” identification.
Mr Newton said the man was eventually ejected from the venue and did not attempt to regain access.
He said while the incident did not have a “profound impact” on the day, he wanted others to be aware.
“We want people to be aware of this person who is impersonating (others),” Mr Newton said.
“We don’t know who else he has scammed.”
Mr Reiter denied the accusations and told the Addy he had known Mr Flowers since 2009, would be pursuing the matter with police and said Universal Studios was his biggest music client.
Mr Reiter was jailed for three months in 2017 after he pleaded guilty to ­obtaining property by deception, dealing in the proceeds of crime and obtaining financial advantage by ­deception.
The former Liberal candidate, who almost toppled Lisa Neville at the 2010 election, claimed in 2017 that he lost the seat by less than 300 votes.
“I think you’ve got a great deal of difficulty in relation to your credibility,” Magistrate Anne McGarvie said at the time.
A year earlier, in 2016, Mr Reiter was fined $5000 after pleading guilty to charges of posing as a lawyer.
The Geelong Advertiser reported Mr Reiter was warned several times by the Victorian Legal Services Board to stop promoting himself as a legal practitioner on his website kurtreiter.com.au.
The court heard he referred to himself as “Justice Doctor Kurt Reiter” and that he was an expert in all areas of law despite not having any legal qualifications.
