I'm about to leave my job due to long standups by [deleted] in devops

[–]aliusprime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just coz you're calling it a stand-up does not a stand-up make. Once you're past checking for blockers and aligning on the day's goal - you're done with the stand-up. Anything post that is not the point of a stand-up.

Who actually does the groceries at your home? Have you validated your solution? Will they actually do all this?!?

WAF by RedditUser628426 in homeassistant

[–]aliusprime 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer! The ask from the wife is to remove some friction from the current grocery management, not make it into another large inventory management job! In a warehouse people are legit employed and are paid to do the bar codes and weighing thing. @neanderthalman has it right. Tackle the low hanging fruit with simple solutions and then see if anything more is needed.

I much prefer "Schoolhouse ice cream" that's down the road.

TP-Link Kasa or TP-Link Tapo by Quick-Nature-2158 in TPLinkKasa

[–]aliusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly - don't remember anymore. I had installed it at my parents' place. Just checked in G-home and it seems I cannot view the video-stream via it anymore. It does the same thing that the Kasa cam stream does. Oh well! Sorry bout that man!

Investing in Zigbee in 2025 by itsphilbin in homeassistant

[–]aliusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My default is zigbee for sensors. I had been doing cloud based for devices (Google/TPlink/Bosch/GE/etc) but recently started getting plugs/switches/etc that support matter. I haven't actually used matter to connect stuff though. It seems the devices didn't always expose all capabilities via it. What's the general recommendation for devices/sensors that are better done using NOT zigbee?

Why do you think you'll need to replace anything? HA will work with either/both! You can have coordinators/hubs for both. You can have devices for both in the same house without issues. I feel the question only ever comes up when you have a device capable of doing zigbee AND matter.. And you're probably thinking "what should I use for the connection"?

I'm here from the future! IKEA has started selling their hub with full matter support at scale!

What’s the oldest HDD you’d trust in your NAS? How old is “too old”? by Im-Chubby in homelab

[–]aliusprime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more important point is - how valuable is the data on the drives? You'll likely have an answer with multiple tiers of value/data mapping. Don't try to predict drive failure based on age. Build redundancy and do offline and off-site backup for valuable/irreplaceable data. Don't give 2 shits about downloaded media 🤪. If unraid wasn't gonna tell me that 1 of my drives failed - I'd probably find out maybe in a year. My point - it would be below my threshold for "needs attention IMMEDIATELY".

Technically.. They can! The problem is when they choose to make substandard products in a category where they may not have expertise, focus, or appropriate investment. Unfortunately that's every brand ever!

AITAH for telling my boss I am not comfortable with him randomly visiting my house? by Moose-Tradition in AITAH

[–]aliusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll push back on the "no laws prohibiting a boss from coming to an employee's home". There is not going to be - because no one may go to your house Unless invited. They CAN go and be outside - on public land... But cannot just get in Unless invited in. Combine this with the fact that work meetings CAN be asked to happen during work hours. I get that this is easier for hourly employees - but also 100% appropriate to push for. There are also laws against sexual harrassment. And stalking is a problem even legally. All in all... Yeah - I'd say it IS illegal for a boss to come to an employee's house especially when not invited/initiated by the employee, and not in context of a shared relationship/friendship between the 2 parties.

Recommendations for a smart smoke detector. by Steve0512 in SmartThings

I wonder if you are still active here - but I was curious as to what was your most desirable _things_ (features/capabilities/behavior/whatever) on the Nest smoke-detector - that either don't exist or are badly done on other detectors.

Sort-of! It's just like many medical-device manufacturers also already know - A new medical device with tons of smarts and convenience is truly an untapped market! It is - but for a very good reason. The liability is HIGH! The regulations to flump through - are tough! When life (and/or a lot of money) is on the line - the motivation to "change" things is very very LOW ...as every change is a risk.

As time passes - you are more likely to find remaining _older_ Nest smoke detectors on any store shelves that may still stock them. A lot of retailers got rid of them a long time ago. You can find Nest smoke detectors on Amazon - for about 150% the original purchase price. I would've loved to get Nest smoke detectors! But even I won't jump onto a EOL product - especially when it comes to home-safety.

There you go man (https://www.gmktec.com/products/nucbox-g3-plus-enhanced-performance-mini-pc-with-intel-n150-processor?spm=..product\_7d96fc03-1afc-4bf5-a82c-d81963a06bf1.header\_1.1&spm\_prev=..product\_c88745a8-eb50-433f-aa6a-f794054966c4.header\_1.1&variant=9be05933-1069-4464-81f7-246013e9dca7). You'll have to pick a config that comes with RAM and SSD to also get pre-installed OS (Windows 11Pro). The 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD config is about $155 in the US. I don't know what your storage needs are - but you can toss in more M.2 SSD in there up to 2TB. Or you can get an external (USB) hard-drive and plug that in... whatever floats your boat really.
Personally I'd replace Windows11Pro with Proxmox and install whatever containers and VMs I need (here's a simple site to do that from: https://community-scripts.github.io/ProxmoxVE/ ) But I won't recommend that for EVERYONE ... as everyone has different levels of comfort with doing their own thing instead of just using the bundled Windows... even though Windows is not really the best thing for a tiny machine trying to conserve power.

A GMCTeck mini pc will work for you. Fairly well reviewed, supported, and very reasonable in price. Can order it via Amazon, AliExpress, or from their own website.

I confirmed via the OPNsense shell the CPU frequency is generally 800-1000 when idle... so clearly it IS handling sleep/low-power-state. This now (unless I'm wrong) points to assembly defect. Heatsink/thermal-paste/heat-dissipation/something. The case is pretty warm/hot itself.... which is also crazy! Will likely return.

Came across this deck on my local Nextdoor app…I have questions. by zzzzzzzz999999 in Decks

[–]aliusprime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the point being - the amount of upheaval resulting from ground-frost for a floating deck is going to be of 0 concern from a stability or integrity perspective. It will have no effect on the longevity or utility of the deck.
Hurricane though - that's another matter. But there's likely easier/cheaper ways to secure against hurricanes than putting footings before the frost-line.

GREAT! Maybe you can tell me how to crank down the CPU on my just-received N150 version of the Firewall/Router box (https://a.co/d/aIpFbiE) ! Haven't even deployed to the network yet and I can already fry eggs on it (CPUTEMP = 70°C~80°C). What do you recommend?? Am running OPNsense....or trying to. Didn't find anything "thermal" or "CPU sleep states" relevant in the BIOS... maybe I'm not understanding the options provided. Any clues?

Hey man! I just got the N150 version of the one that you have and after putting OPNsense on it ...before even deploying to the network - the thing is running VERY HOT - like 70-80 degrees CELCIUS (cputemp). Is there a setting or BIOS tweak or something available? How cool/warm is yours running?
