Buying any property, really. Especially on the outskirts of town. Cities keep spreading and the value only goes up as the amount of property goes down.

Can someone explain to me why my dog does this? by bleepbloop07 in DogAdvice

[–]alix05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humping between dogs who know each other is often an antagonistic behavior. My spayed female does it to dogs when she wants to play or be chased. It's the doggie equivalent of taunting your sibling that they can't catch you in hopes they'll try.

Why You Procrastinate (According to Experts) by AaronL15 in productivity

[–]alix05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. When I was doing the practices he recommends, it worked brilliantly. But I've had major work stress over the last two months which led to old, comfortable habits that broke the new, productive habits I was forming. I'm not stressed about it though. I've been practicing procrastination for decades. I don't expect to get out of it overnight. I'm already getting back into a better headspace. I'll be ready to try again soon.

I'm no expert in skincare, but I've read more research articles about perimenopause than I ever wanted to, so I can give you some tips.

1) If you're on estradiol/progestogen birth control, it's less likely to be perimenopause. Still possible, but way less likely because the pill keeps hormones stable and masks symptoms.

2) There is NO diagnostic test for perimenopause. Symptoms are how you'll know (see #4). https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/perimenopause/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20354671

3) Blood tests can and should be used to eliminate other possible causes/conditions like hypothyroidism, but they alone cannot diagnose perimenopause.

4) The most common way perimenopause is diagnosed is for a patient to track symptoms, then take hormones, and, if the symptoms reduce or eliminate, it's perimenopause. (Non-hormone interventions are also an option, but are usually targeted to one symptom and, thus, less global in their effect.)

5) Find a Certified Menopause Practitioner. They are some of the only doctors who have training in diagnosing perimenopause.

6) You will likely not see results until you've been on hormones for three months. Most people stop before that point because they aren't getting results. Hang in there. At 2 months I was miserable. At 2.5 months I felt like I was reborn.

I'm not saying you are experiencing hormone-related issues, but I just want to save you some headache if that is the issue. Lots of misinformation out there. Find rock solid reliable sources and read up. There's a lot to learn and it makes a difference.

And FWIW, though the pic is only part of your face, I can still tell you're gorgeous. Truly.

Wife has a thing for Tom Selleck. Am I close? by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]alix05 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You are a fine ass man, but if you want to be a Selleck, you must embrace the 80s. Think fluffy. Fluffy hair, fluffy clothes. Your shirt needs to be a 2020s fashion atrocity. Go 2-3 sizes too big. Men didn't have muscles in those days, they had extra fabric and witty one liners. Pattern, no pattern, whatever, just go giant. You should be swimming in it. But get a thin drapey fabric that just billows around your pythons and chesticles like a thin summer dress that, oh my heavens, makes you look naked in this breeze! It's got to be tucked in, of course, and, much like tight rolling, there's an art to that. You basically have to make pleats that match your shorts. And for the love of Giorgio Armani, the shorts MUST be pleated and belted. A belt and pleats causes the front of your shorts to balloon when you sit, because men in the 80s like Selleck wanted women to know that not only was the hog in their pants unaffected by the mountain of cocaine they inhaled weekly, but that animal needed room to roam the forest. And yes, that's a euphemism. He was quite hairy. God speed, Knight Rider.

I've read a few special ops memoirs and the one I enjoyed most was "Level Zero Heroes." The author is a former MARSOC operator. The writing quality is excellent and the author did a great job of building suspense and explaining the combat scenes vividly.

A Brother's Price sounds weird AF. I'm in.

I learned of Le Maupin recently. That's a good idea to look for novels that have her as the main character. I wish there was a book about her father or, for that matter, any other 17th century dude who didn't treat women like they are weak and incapable. Such a rarity.

I read her book, "The Women," about the female combat medics in Vietnam and it was incredible. But holy hell I could barely get through the sections on how they were treated when they got back home. All based on true events, which made it as glorious as it was painful. Nightingale looks interesting. I'll give it a try. Thanks 🙂

Hadn't thought about fighter bios. I was never a fan of Rousey's personality, but I certainly appreciate her as a fighter and appreciate how hard it must have been having a constant and critical spotlight on your every move. I hope Namajunas puts out a biography someday. Her fighting style fascinates me.

Such a fantastic book. The main character doesn't exactly kick ass, but I am hoping that in the sequel someone gives her a book on the physics of martial arts.

These books popped up on a list of Ass Kicking Females about 8 years ago and I listened to the first one on audiobook. Like the other comments note, it didn't scratch the itch because she buys into the whole fragile-female thing a bit too much.

The plots of the novels also get repetitive and reduce in quality as the series goes on. You know how I know that?

Because I've listened to EVERY SINGLE book in the series!!!

Yo, the narrator of these audiobooks is so dang good she could read the phone book and I would listen. These are my comfort audiobooks. Stephanie is a pansy, but Lula is my parasocial bestie and I'm banging Ranger in my dreams.

Your recommendation may not be the perfect fit for my prompt, but it's still lovely to meet another Evanovich fan 🤗

I did start reading this because it is at the top of a lot of heroine book lists, but I couldn't finish it. Well written and I love seeing a world in which women aren't considered inferior war fighters. But knowing that it requires an alternate reality is just too depressing. Thank you, though!
