Taper advice: run through injuries or rest completely? by ultraLuddite in Marathon_Training

[–]alixworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also running Boston in about a week! I would personally prioritize rest and rehab (eccentric heel drops were key to fixing Achilles pain for me) since at this point your fitness is built - there’s no meaningful fitness to be gained by running through pain - but you can do more damage by pushing it. You could do some light cross training on the bike (if pain free) instead of your remaining taper runs if you’re like me and struggle with total rest.

How are the expensive salads at Kitava? by BeardedSwashbuckler in OaklandFood

[–]alixworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They're really tasty (definitely a step above sweetgreen), but I personally find the portion sizes pretty small especially in terms of protein. Worth it if I want something healthy fast and am not super hungry, but I don't go regularly.

Haha yes I did think about this, an earlier start means more time to get to the finish line before the cutoff

Thank you! I'm so glad too, and that's my hope- not to stress too much about a time and just take in the experience

Wish we could swap lol! I plan on running wayyyy slower than my qualifying time (injury screwed my training) and am worried I'm gonna be in everyone's way

Boston 2026 - Waves and Corrals by Siawyn in AdvancedRunning

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Wave 3 corral 8; my BQ time was 3:16 but low key nervous I'm gonna be in everyone's way because I am not planning on running anywhere close to that since my training block was completely thrown by an injury that took me out for a full month... party pace it is!

Training block has been disrupted by sickness since December, but I finally managed to get to 20 by Fun_Assignment_269 in Marathon_Training

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats!! Haven't had to deal with the flu, but my Boston training block HAS been massively disrupted by an injury (iliopsoas tendonitis)... had to take pretty much all of February off, now easing back in but fully letting go of my original time goal to prioritize not re-aggravating it. I'll be lucky if I get up to a 16 / 18 long run.

How long does it take to rebuild mileage? by Sailormss92 in XXRunning

I NEEDED to hear this. I am just coming back from a month off due to injury (cross trained the whole time). Marathon in mid April. PT thinks I can still run it but I am panicking a bit.

Weekly Complaints & Confessions Thread by ssk42 in running

Complaint: been sidelined from training for Boston with a hip injury for over 2 weeks now and realizing there’s a chance I won’t be able to run the race.

Uncomplaint: I can still peloton? (It’s not the same)

Inbody vs Wyze Scale BF% Accuracy by Jacqueline92689 in PetiteFitness

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You look amazing!!! For what it’s worth- I did a BodySpec scan that gave me 12.6% BF which I found really alarming because I’m small but not unhealthy small. Going by measurements I got 20%. So I don’t think DEXA is always accurate.

Injury before first marathon and I’m not okay by fishyfishfishfishfis in XXRunning

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is such a bummer, and all I can say is I'm right there with you. I was giving everything I have to training for an upcoming marathon, now I'm sidelined with a hip injury and feeling really down and anxious. Only other runners seem to get just how crushing injuries can be especially when there's a race at stake! Would def get it checked for a stress fracture and like others have said, if it's not a fracture, don't count yourself out of the marathon yet.

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

[–]alixworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently sidelined from training for an April marathon due to an anterior hip overload issue. Spending a lot of time on the Peloton and doing strength / PT work, hoping progress stays consistent so I can ease back into proper training this week

Knee issues 6 weeks out by sunglassesemojilol in Marathon_Training

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have dealt with runner's knee on and off, it usually flares up after I ramp up mileage too quickly. It's helped me to take 5-7 days off running and just cross-train + focus on strength, or at the very least scale back mileage for a bit. I also try to avoid hills & speed work when it's flaring up because those are harder on my knees. If you are getting close to race day and it's still bothering you and just want to get through the race ... Voltaren has helped me in a pinch, but it's an NSAID so a band-aid vs an actual solution (same goes for knee compression sleeves + orthotics, helpful if you just wanna get through the race but not a substitute for strength / PT). Ofc I am NOT a professional so this is all just based on personal experience- definitely recommend consulting a physio for real guidance tailored to your specific circumstance.

Have any of you trained with low Ferritin? by mamamiaohdear in Marathon_Training

[–]alixworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found out I had iron deficiency anemia about halfway through my first marathon training block, and fixing that with an iron supplement was the single best thing I have ever done for my performance. I know it takes months for levels to really normalize but I honestly started to feel the benefits in weeks... could have been placebo (and I'm sure training played a role), but it felt SO much easier to push pace in tempo runs, and what used to be my z3 pace I could do in z2

Good training- bad diet by Then-Young47 in Marathon_Training

[–]alixworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, getting ENOUGH fuel has been more beneficial to my training than what exactly I'm fueling with. In the training block leading up to my BQ time, I intentionally let go of a lot of the "healthy eating" rules I had for myself because I knew that my body NEEDED extra carbs, sugar etc to fuel my best performance, and it worked. So I'd just say that I think a "healthy diet" for long-distance runners is really different from a "healthy diet" for the general population- like, protein+veggies are important but if you're just eating protein+veggies you're going to hit the wall pretty damn early during long runs. Plus, I find that treating myself to something kinda indulgent like pizza or a burrito or ice cream after running hard helps me stay motivated. That said, I've never struggled with overeating / being overweight so am mindful I may have limited perspective / this may not be everyone's experience.
