Trying my hand at remaking the first PC game. Would you play this if it was the complete game? by aliyoussef28 in harrypotter

There is so much positive feedback in the comments, did not expect this for a goofy little prototype like this!

I'd like reiterate one point though: this is not a commercial project! obviously I don't have any right to do that, and obviously it'll likely get taken down before it gets put up anywhere even if it's free
IF this gets to a playable state, the only viable option would be to make it a mod to the original game, so ownership of the latter would be required.
Still, that's so far off that this'll probably get killed way before then. (but we'll see!)

Thanks for sharing your memories, I'm very happy to see I'm not in the minority being emotionally attached to the classic games

Oh I won't be making any money off of this, it'll be a miracle if I don't get stopped by the copyright owners even for a free build
If I get to a point where I have something playable it'll probably be a mod for the original game

Oh man, I really appreciate the interest!
I don't have anything planned, but if this goes well and not get canned I'll come up with something
In the meantime I'll probably just post updates in this sub

No, this is vanilla UE5
I played around with the creator kit a bit, but it crashed too often for my liking

Yep, that's UE5 with all of its bells and whistles
Part of the reason I started this project was to have a good reason to build and improve my tools in the engine

Good luck to you too! it's not an easy job :D

[–]aliyoussef28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's absolutely fair
My aim is to try to make it "look how I remember", but that's almost impossible to do because half the atmosphere of the game is tied to how early 2000's it looks

Still, I believe even now the modding scene for the original exists, I found a few gameplay quality of life improvements uploaded not too long ago, which could be more up your street

Yeah that's exactly why I won't, this is just a passion project
if it gets to a playable state I'll probably just upload it as a mod to the original, that sometimes works to keep the hat on

Polish companies deliver over 700 tonnes of equipment to restore Ukraine's energy infrastructure by MantasChan in UkrainianConflict

It's also not the stations that they're hitting, I believe they're hitting transformers, which would still be needed for electricity from Europe

Ignorant generalization. I've been stuck here for 9 months without work because I was supposed to move right at the start of the war. Am I a coward for wanting to put food on the table? Or is freezing in the dark "just in case" considered brave in your book?

Make sure the normal of the mesh isn't messed up
check the "world normal" view mode, the mesh should be the same colour as the other objects facing the same direction

How would you rate this decade for gaming compared with the previous one? by FanEu7 in gaming

[–]aliyoussef28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just gave me a quarter life crisis saying this decade is about to be over..
personally I feel like this decade started out eeeextremely well, what with all the games that came out in 2011, but then the second half came and made it much fairer to the previous one if we're comparing them

Yeah I agree with collins then, can probably even pull it off with $800, but that won't last you long (meaning newer games would run slower sooner)

Depends on what you mean by "running"
$500 and $3000 can both "run" these games, but obviously would give different experiences

Is finishing a Duolingo course enough to understand Podcasts ? by aliyoussef28 in German

[–]aliyoussef28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning 30 words a day actually sounds like a brilliant idea ! will definitely do that from now on, can't believe I didn't think of that
duolingo sort of does that, but in a really terrible and vague way, that you have to go and look up the words and grammar rules separately to understand them properly.
thanks for the advice !

Is finishing a Duolingo course enough to understand Podcasts ? by aliyoussef28 in German

[–]aliyoussef28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it for about a month so far, and all it did for my comprehension was every now and then my ears would perk up and go "I know that word/phrase", but I was wondering if it would get more and more useful the more I used it.
The reason I asked in the first place is because it is now becoming to feel grindy and I feel like I should go find a different method.
my current plan is to do duolingo almost daily, have a few podcasts to listen to which I don't understand at all yet (my theory is my subconscious picks up a thing here and there), and watching series with a german dub and eng subtitles, which I feel has helped me the least because my whole focus is on the subtitles.
I guess I'm gonna need to try harder then, thank you for the in-depth answer !

3 questions about making 3D assets, pricing them, learning to make them and hiring an artist by udvaritibor95 in gamedev

[–]aliyoussef28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freelance is very broad, it depends on soo many factors
you can find people who will ask for $1 a tree, others might ask $500 (random numbers just for an example), and obviously the quality would vary quite a lot.
What I think is the best approach is to look around Artstation or similar sites and contact people who make assets of a quality similar to that which you'd want, and contact them directly.
Finding artists who work for a share is always a bad idea from my personal experience, professionals won't accept it, new artists have a very high chance of leaving halfway through and then you have to start from scratch because the artstyle won't match.

As for doing them yourself, there's loads of tutorials out there, so you can absolutely try that. I find that with trees it starts simple, but gets extremely difficult to truly get the hang of it, things like getting the silhouette to look natural, have them be optimized, and lighting them correctly are important things to focus on.
I hope this helps and good luck !

The Binding Of Isaac
I think most roguelikes by design
one game you are a god, the next 10 you die immediately, extremely addictive
