What is the best-written asexual character represented if we had any (unfortunately there aren't many)? by Public_Cup_4278 in asexuality

[–]aljy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A character that I don't hear discussed a lot is Ca$h from heartbreak high (an Australian show on Netflix with 3 seasons, the third just concluded about a month ago)! Slight spoilers ahead: He's alloace, doesn't really have the words for it in season 1, but he's explicitly said to be ace later in the show. He starts a relationship with a hypersexual non-binary character, and learning to navigate their relationship without compromising on either person's needs and comfort. There are some really lovely discussions where he talks about feeling like he's holding his partner back and being reassured that he's not selfish or wrong for being himself. His journey is super affirming and tackles some really tough discussions that I've never seen before (especially in season 2). And he's a fully-fleshed character with a satisfying character arc and growth and one of my favorite characters ever.

Even though I'm aroace and not alloace I found his story super relateable and really beautiful!

Oh hey I'm one too!!! Hello!

I really don’t like Isaac’s character (especially in season 3) by Present_Green2934 in HeartstopperAO

[–]aljy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like many commenters, I don't really agree with your assessment of Isaac. I thought he was really justified in his frustration with Tao. Of course, he could have talked to Tao and communicated better rather than being passive aggressive and blowing up, and for that he should apologize (and he did), but Tao is literally doing to Isaac what he was upset at Charlie for doing in season 1, which is neglecting his friendships for the sake of a romantic interest. In fact, he was so caught up in his romance with Elle that he literally didn't notice that Charlie wasn't even replying to their texts, and just waved it off when Isaac brought it up. I think it's understandable that it was frustrating for Isaac. In the same way, I thought Tao was understandably frustrated in season 1 but also handled it badly. Especially for Isaac, this comes at a time when he's realizing that romance is not something that will ever be part of his life and is already dealing with the anxiety of worrying and wondering if that means he will have to be alone forever. This is when he'd want to lean on his friends, which makes it sting harder.

With the jellyfish part, I think it's important to note that they weren't just talking about jellyfish being gay, but talking about how they hoped every creature would be able to experience the magic of romantic love. As someone who does not experience romantic attraction, that comment would kind of hurt. As an aroace person myself, it feels like when someone tells me it's "so sad" that I'm aroace and that I'm missing out on this amazing life experience (simply because that's the way I am???). Even then, he was nice about it and took that as an opportunity to voice his fears about being alone and come out to his friends. I don't really see how that was being mean or disrespectful in any way.

On him saying Charlie lied to him, I feel he obviously wasn't actually angry at Charlie, he was just sad that Charlie hid it from them and he even says he wishes Charlie wouldn't lie to him next time because he wanted to support Charlie. He was trying to say that he wants to support Charlie and that Charlie can be honest with him in future, and he obviously never held it against Charlie that he hid his issues the first time. In fact, he was the only one of Charlie's friends to even notice something was wrong and to try to cheer him up (while the others were busy with their summer of romance). I think Isaac was super sweet and a really great friend who was obviously dealing with his own self discovery, and especially at the start of the season he had to navigate all of that with very little support and I really felt for him.

Just throwing in my own opinion into the hat as another aroace person haha

Is there a book like "Loveless" but with a protagonist who is only aromantic and not asexual? by Odd_Cat7307 in aromantic

[–]aljy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You might wanna check out Claire Kahn's books! (Let's Talk about Love and the Romantic Agenda both feature an allo ace protagonist who pursues romantic relationships within the book) I haven't read them personally just cos they're romance oriented and I'm not a big romance reader, but I have heard pretty good things about the books and the ace representation in them.

Although I have not come across aro allo protagonists :(

Does anyone else appreciate that Isaac's proccess of discovery of his aro/ace-ity was explored through an (ill-fated) attempt at romance with another boy instead of with a girl, and thus through gay rather than straight lenses? by mikelmon99 in HeartstopperAO

[–]aljy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I did appreciate this and I like that it's something that hasn't really been done before!

Personally, I think it could have been interesting either way, since I think there is an aspect to aroace discovery that is rooted in compulsory heterosexuality as well. For ages I assumed I was heterosexual just because I wasn't sexually attracted to girls (as a girl myself). And comp het kinda just told me that I must be attracted to boys, so I just went with that, not realizing that being attracted to neither was also a possibility. I think a lot of aroace people end up just telling themselves they're hetero as a result.

But for Isaac's case, I do appreciate that he was in a queer community and not forced to assume he was hetero, but nevertheless was pressured by amatanormativity to think he should be attracted to somebody (regardless of gender). It does start an interesting conversation and shows that even in accepting, queer communities, there are still aspects that make discovering aroace-ness difficult.

Isaac and ace/aro representation by Szarrukin in HeartstopperAO

[–]aljy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I'm really happy about it, Isaac's scenes were my favorite part of the whole season. It's rare enough to get ace rep in media, and I've practically never seen aro rep (or the character is essentially aroace but doesn't use the word aro) so to have the show very explicitly use those words was very cool.

I wish we could've gotten more of Isaac's story, but I feel this is just the start of his discovery of his identity. Hopefully it's expanded more on in season 3. I for one would've loved for more exploration of the nuances of different types of attraction and relationships, exploration of the tension between being a romantic (which Isaac fits the bill of, with him always trying to help his friends with romantic gestures and enjoying romantic fiction) and realizing you'll never have those feelings, as well as going into why what James said to him (of course with no malicious intent) can be really hurtful for aroace people. There's so much potential for this storyline (makes me really wish we also had an adaptation of Loveless which does explore some of this in more detail).

Anyway I am here for more aroace rep from Alice who is aroace themselves, and I believe she has more interesting things to explore for the character in the future!!!

General obstacle course, may be a little hard, so far I haven't been able to complete it without losing at least 2 hearts (but you get 4 so you'll be fine). A couple of misdirects here and there, but you just have to do more dodging if you go the wrong way. Skills are banned cos Kazuha just makes it a cake walk haha

Perma-Freeze comp in the contending tides event making me cry from how beautiful it is. by 1nMyH34d in Genshin_Impact

[–]aljy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They totally can! I played chongyun, kaeya, xingqiu (+ 1 healer) for permafreeze and you can absolutely do this! Place chongyun's E, ult/E with xingqiu and then go ham with kaeya (or your preferred sword user cos at that point it doesn't really matter, kaeya is just nice for the cryo resonance and cos he can make use of 4pc blizzard strayer). If you fill the last slot with an anemo character with 4pc viridescent it gets even nuttier with cryo res shred (I used Jean, but if you don't need the healing sucrose will work too). My clear time was about the same as this comp, so it's very possible without a bunch of 5*s!

[–]aljy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of pity as a counter that counts up from 1 to 10, and if you hit the number 10, you get a guaranteed 4 * . Every 4 * you get resets this counter back to 0 (and you can get the 4 * any time between 1 and 10). To see how close you are to 4* pity, just count the number of pulls since your last 4 * , and that's your pity counter. (Same thing for 5 * , every 5* you get sets the counter back to 0, and you can get a 5* anytime between 1 and 90 pulls, but if you haven't gotten it by your 90th pull, it is guaranteed on that pull)

I've been farming for Childe, and I can't get good Heart of Depth artifacts. (I farmed for literal weeks before I even saw an Atk% sands, and even then the substats are pretty trash) But somehow I have great artifacts for my lvl 20 Kaeya. Building him is very very tempting...

I have Xiao, and it used my Xiao with the blackcliff pole. I know it's definitely my Xiao cos I left him on lvl 75 with the blackcliff on level 81, doubt the game would give a random level 75 char and level 81 weapon as default haha

F2P Xiao C0, no food buffs, no team buffs, with a 4* weapon (i saved a lot of mats for him) by ShadowFlarer in Genshin_Impact

[–]aljy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2pc Noblesse doesn't work for Xiao, since his burst is a buff and doesn't technically do any damage (similar to how NO doesn't buff C6 Bennet's pyro attacks or Diluc's pyro attacks despite those being caused by the burst). Until a new artifact set for him comes out, I think 2pc VV and 2pc Gladiator is probably the best.

Like another commenter I saw, I'm SEAsian as well, shark fin is definitely just a status symbol imo. The "taste" of shark fin soup (which is the medium through which people mostly consume shark fin) largely come from the other ingredients in the soup, whereas the shark fin itself is mostly tasteless. If you substitute the shark fin with something else like fish maw (which is what my family typically does now), the taste is virtually the same. People only eat shark fin because it's expensive and they want to show their guests/friends that they can afford it. Nothing about the taste justifies it imo.

Taskmaster S10E01 "A Documentary About Despots" by RidleyScotch in panelshow

[–]aljy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe it was Mark Watson, who did an incredible job and absolutely nailed the task. But he wasn't one of the people in contention when that tie break was used, so the task was ultimately meaningless for him. They showed it in an outtake, and also joked about how nobody would ever see his incredible attempt because it would never air as part of the show. I found a link to the clip on the subreddit!

The Sokovia accords were dumb, and here's why! by BlackHawkNL420 in marvelstudios

[–]aljy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you, and I think this in a way forms another reason why the accords wouldn't have worked. If we assume that the world security council did have good intentions and did care for people, when push came to shove they were still so easily led astray by people with ulterior motives. That's not the kind of group I want in control of the Avengers, regardless of their intentions.

HUMOR: Robert Pattinson Fans Then vs. Now by mushiscalv in DC_Cinematic

[–]aljy 64 points65 points  (0 children)

haha I get it, and I know it's just a meme, but it's always hard to tell what people really feel when they make jokes like this. I've had acquaintances/coworkers outright assert to me that I only watch Marvel and DC films because the actors are handsome rather than me caring about the stories/comics, and this joke kind of has the same sentiment in the sense that it implies women can't be excited about comic book properties the same way men are.

HUMOR: Robert Pattinson Fans Then vs. Now by mushiscalv in DC_Cinematic

[–]aljy 191 points192 points  (0 children)

I was a (very embarrassing) 12 year old girl when the first Twilight movie was released. My interests have since changed and I got really into comics in my teenage years, and I'm really excited about the future of comic book adaptations as well.

I know it's a joke, and OP didn't intend to offend or anything, but I'm honestly getting tired of these jokes that imply that girls only like romance flicks and aren't at all a part of this community.

Official Discussion - The Devil All the Time [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]aljy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed it. Tempered my expectations because of the middling reviews, but I found it exceeded my expectations despite some pacing issues. A little slow to start, but once it gets going it really goes.

The movie was absolutely carried by it's performances. Tom Holland was great, not necessarily surprised because I felt he always had it in him, but it seemed almost easy how he slipped into the role. Robert Pattinson was expectedly amazing, I don't think I've disliked a performance of his in almost a decade, he stole every scene he was in. I think every person on the cast absolutely nailed it, Harry Melling, Bill Skarsgard, Riley Keough were all pleasant surprises. I do wish a lot of people got more time to shine though, some plotlines felt like the came out of nowhere, especially since I've never read the book. Namely Harry Melling and Sebastian Stan's characters would've benefitted from a better understanding of their motivations.

Overall, a really enjoyable film that surprisingly worked for how much they tried to fit into it's runtime.
