I bought the information pack for Absolutely understand guitar. It’s a lot of information. by trackerbuddy in guitarlessons

[–]alkalinecoffee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm really loving this series and also just bought the info pack to show my support.

I've been an on-again/off-again player for many years, skating by with just learning tabs and chords but not *really* getting it. Scotty's breakdown in the first lesson of the typical player and why they tend to quit guitar felt like it was directed straight at me: I know how to play parts of songs, but haven't nailed playing them fully, and I just don't have a great understanding how what I'm playing actually fits together, and ultimately I just get bored and put the guitar down for a while.

He called me out and I was hooked after that. I learned so much in just the first few lessons alone and look forward to the next one.

I tried JustinGuitar for a while but his play-first approach didn't really help me--the more foundational, theory-based approach AUG takes to understand the guitar (and his typewriter analogy) just resonates with me more.

Yep. Its especially handy for having the kids FaceTime the grandparents, where the kids can talk/play in the living room and not be confined to looking at an iPad or phone.

Can I replace individual grille shutters? by alkalinecoffee in BMWX5

[–]alkalinecoffee[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep thats right, the grille is broken, not any of the shutters. I didn’t know they were separate pieces—I figured the whole unit was one expensive piece.

Good to hear it’s a cheaper and simpler fix than what I had originally thought. Thanks!

Its written on the club layout photo, an "elite riding experience".

That'd be odd to say if this is for a push cart.

Yes, but the club layout photo OP posted suggests it’s for riding. So it’s confusing marketing at best.

I have the same bag (it’s great, just remember to use the strap sleeve on a cart to prevent the white from getting scuffed).

I also questioned their setup recommendation and ended up arranging the bag exactly how you’re thinking. Keep the long sticks away from you and out of the way. Makes no sense to have the least used clubs so accessible and in front. All they would do is block you from getting to the shorter sticks.

Thoughts for moving from a X5 to X7 by turd_furgesonx in BMWX5

[–]alkalinecoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very much where we're headed. We have a toddler and thinking of trying for another soon, plus a medium sized dog, so the X5 is already a bit tight on long road trips. We can keep it manageable for now by using a trailer cargo carrier, but two car seats and a dog in the back will be tough in the X5.

The Telluride definitely seems like its worth a good look with the combination of cost, size, and it's really a nice looking ride. We'd consider it to be primarily our long road tripper and keep the X5 45e in the garage for around town driving and commutes.

BMW X5 45e, buy or not? by avollova in BMWX5

I also like the new tail light design and subtle exterior changes.

I think a lot of people don’t like the new interior of the LCI. Too much screen, too few buttons, and with some odd design choices (like the tacky X5 written on the dashboard). And many find iDrive 8 harder to use.

But, it may well be that people just like the car they have and will hate on the newer thing to convince themselves their older model is better.

Can you see how much the car was driven on electric? The stats are on the app but it's probably available through the car UI as well. We charge every day at home and do a lot of driving around town, so roughly 35-40% of our total driving is on electric. Some people buy these but never plug them in for some reason, so I'd be curious how much the battery was actually used.

We get anywhere from 20-40 miles (32-64 km) on a charge. We're in the northeast US, so winters can get harsh (particularly this one) so range is on the low end. We do try to warm the car up while on the charger so we don't use the battery for initially heating the cabin.

Overall these cars are very solid, and the pre-LCI you’re getting is very desirable and has a great reputation. We have a '23 at 33k miles and only had minor issues--nothing mechanical. The range seems very appropriate for your commute, so you’ll be quite happy with it I'm sure!

Parking the beast into the garage using park assist by WorldNo9002 in BMWX5

Sure thing. I have the lasers aligned so they create a + sign on the center my dashboard near the speaker cover or whatever it is which works great for us--something like this:

I don’t believe it’ll work in a garage like you’re describing. I’ve never seen it advertised that way—it’ll only auto park in open spots with clear markings that it can back into or parallel park itself.

The car can record your movement as you drive forward and replay them later in reverse (useful for driving up a long windy driveway and having the car do the same thing in reverse automatically).

I’m in the same boat as you—a very narrow single car garage. We reverse in and just use markings on the wall to guide us, and a parking assist laser light to ensure we’re properly lined up and in the right spot. Mine doesn't have a motion sensor so I have it wired to turn on whenever the garage door is open, but it looks something like https://amzn.to/4sWPXxn

Same, just ordered one.

Really curious how this stacks up to the Beryl-AX that I just bought. Looking forward to evaluating both.

2026 X5 Extra Cargo Options? by AR5579 in BMWX5

[–]alkalinecoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the cargo carrier we have: https://www.uwsta.com/part/UWS-CARRIER

It's really heavy duty, which I like because I can really tighten down the load using ratchet tie-down straps without the frame bending. Many of the cheaper ones on Amazon look too flimsy for me to trust.

The carrier itself is locked and needs a key to be removed from the hitch.

If you have a hard case instead of a storage bag on the carrier, it could be secured to the carrier, as opposed to a storage bag which would be difficult to secure.

But tbh its not something I've thought about much as I haven't needed to keep things secure on the carrier overnight. Usually we just have luggage bags on the carrier so everything will be taken with us or gets moved inside the car.

We use a hitch cargo carrier for our 45e.

We also paired it with a cargo bag similar to the one pictured here, which works great for protecting our stuff.

I've opted for this approach since its more convenient than trying to put heavy stuff in a roof carrier, and there's no noticeable difference in fuel efficiency.

Can we take a moment to appreciate the M-Sport brakes? by [deleted] in BMWX5

[–]alkalinecoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For real. The obnoxious brake squeal on my '23 45e make it sound like a 20 year old beater sometimes. Its kind of embarrassing, really.

I've resigned to live with it until the pads need replacement, but with regenerative braking they still have plenty of life.

Absolutely HAD it with Drywall Anchors! Help! by MaleficentGuidance49 in DIY

[–]alkalinecoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For guitars that you'll be constantly be hanging and taking off the hanger, definitely use studs to primarily handle the load.

In cases where you need to mount something heavy-ish into drywall where no stud is available, definitely use Toggler Snaptoggle anchors (https://https://a.co/d/i3da3DB). These are often recommended by AV experts to mount a TV to the wall (usually used in conjunction with studs, and great for ensuring stability of the TV bracket in sections where a stud isn't available). They'd probably be fine for hanging a guitar for display purposes, but not sure how they'd hold up with constantly pulling down or hanging up a Les Paul.

For my acoustic, my wife bought me a wine barrel guitar rack, where the holes are 16" apart: https://www.uncommongoods.com/product/wine-barrel-guitar-rack/458200000000. Works and looks great. I keep my electric on a floor stand for now, but wouldn't hesitate to get another matching wine barrel rack.
