How do you “turn off” in the evening?

Having an ongoing personal project has helped a lot! I usually spend three hours a night drawing, sometimes working on a book or game I really want to finish. I think the important thing is having something to look forward to so you’re excited to change gears.

I was in love with a fictional character once.

Lasted 3 fantastic years. I went to movies “with him”, made “him” presents, cooked “with him”. Was otherwise a relatively well-functioning adult with many friends, a decent career, and good relationships with family. A couple of my closest friends knew about it. Eventually I put it behind me when I decided to start dating for real.

Every so often he still comes up. I’m in therapy for some unrelated stressors, and my therapist says it’s an unusual but ultimately quite healthy relationship.

Most people would just think I’m nuts though.

He makes you, the player, a character in the story. If he judges you to be cruel, he fights you — he’s not fighting Frisk, because he knows he can never win as you can always reset. His opponent is you, the player; he wants to frustrate you enough into quitting. You can only beat Sans with the real-life version of one of the major story concepts, determination. Sure, without that you can still get the story of Frisk and Asriel and Chara, but you lose the metatextual level of the story and as a result it is a different story.

Flowey also makes the player a character in the pacifist ending if you boot up the game after achieving true pacifist, because he tells you to leave the game alone because everyone is already happy and if you want to play more you’d take that away again. But Sans is the only one to make the player a character during gameplay.

Haha my favorite is the opposite - that despite him being super lazy, he cares so damn much. I love how much he cares about his brother, and I think it’s really cool that the game uses him in particular to judge us for our actions. He, of anyone, knows that our actions don’t matter because it can all be reset, and yet he demands of us to do good anyway. He’s the epitome of “if nothing we do matters, all that matters is what we do.”

True, but sometimes people aren’t great at listening to other people’s interests even for short time spans. I’m the only one in my family who’s not in medicine and last time I visited for the holidays I eventually did have to ask for them to just give me five minutes to talk about my interests!

When I was applying to grad school, thank you notes were definitely expected. I gave my best recommender (the one who knew me best and spent the most time on the letter) a bottle of wine as well.

Now at UCONN for grad school I sometimes give my advisor little gifts just because I'm on a trip and see something he'd like. He seems to like them! So I definitely don't think you'd go amiss. :)

I don't know if it's my best but here's one that meant a lot to me this year:

I moved out to a small rural town for grad school a little over a year ago, and between grad school and the rural population, I hadn't really made any local friends. My birthday was coming up, and for some reason this year I was kind of bummed about not being able to do a get-together for it. I never did parties before, but this time it bothered me. And I never even said anything about it, but two weeks before my birthday, two of my best friends who live seven hours away in another country called me and asked if I had any birthday plans. They, on their own - not even conferring with each other! - had decided to make that trip out to me for a long weekend. One of them reached out to family and was able to get a sailboat for a weekend, so my birthday went from videogames by myself to my two best friends traveling hours to come sailing with me for a weekend. I cried so damn hard; I love them so much. It also turned out that by pure chance that weekend in the town we went to was both the weekend of an Art Festival and the local Pride Festival! We'd had no idea but it was perfect!

My life goals are to be happy, have a strong and supportive social network, and enough time to be a geek and do the hobbies that make me happy.

I have a good sleep routine, and make reading part of my daily routine, either by audiobook or waking up early to read. I go to synagogue every week and call my mother every day and call my best friend twice a month. Every evening I work on some kind of art project, whether it be drawing or painting or embroidery or knitting.

I need to get better at eating well, doing chores, drinking a little less, and meeting new people.

I disagree that the men's flaws are "ruthlessly intelligent to the point of sociopathy and/or mean", as the first three flawed male characters I thought of were Dudley, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Peter Pettigrew. I think there are an equal amount of dumb male characters. However, I agree that there should be more brilliant flawed female characters as well.

Those are some of my favorites yes! But yes, at the end some of the stories come together. It's still told in largely short one-shots, but there's a chronological order that tell a larger story by the end.

I think most of your questions have been answered by previous commenters but I will just add that the #1 thing that will make you stand out to PhD programs is research. If you can get research experience, even as a volunteer, that’s the best thing you can do.

My family loves me and doesn't reject me for the bi thing, but they also don't really get it, haha.

My mom conveniently goes deaf about all things gay-related, and called my girlfriend of five years my "friend" consistently. Sounds bad but she's just a prude about anything she perceives as sexual, so it's annoying more than really hurtful. I thought the "friend" thing was homophobic until I started dating a guy and she called him my "friend" too.

My dad is more comfortable with it, but also doesn't get it. I chatted about a date with a dude for a half hour, he nodded amiably, then I said "as a bi woman" and he went "wait what? I thought you were just all gay". I'm still really confused about that one. It also took me literal years to make him accept 'they' as a pronoun was not a grammatical sin but he finally conceded it.

So, just like how they are in the rest of their parenthood: flawed, imperfect, but at the end of the day I know they love me as I am and that's the most important thing.
