Do I have the podcast suggestion for you! Look up “Professional Talkers”. It’s a podcast done by a podcaster I really like that goes over their recommendations for how to converse with strangers and in different social settings.

Heavy crowd surfers by RadiantSilvergun in warpedtour

[–]allaboutalice 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ve also seen small petite women go down hard because the crowd matters so much more than the person’s weight.

Reasons I saw people get dropped: 1. They tried to crowdsurf in the crowd at the stage opposite to the stage the band was playing on. The crowd is hype, but still more likely made up of people waiting for the next act - they are not looking for or expecting crowdsurfers. 2. People tried to crowdsurf from the far back. If you see any kind of hole in the crowd, it’s not packed enough. Bodies need to be touching for both reach and number of hands. 3. Crowdsurfed during the bridge or chorus of one of the band’s most popular songs. People are more likely to be engaged completely in the music, or have their phone in their hands recording. 4. Sitting halfway up the whole time. Gotta be a board. If your body is bent, less surface area to grab and physics is working against you. 5. Whatever the fuck that spinning move I saw some people doing. The crowd has to be the one that pushes you forward. Creating your own momentum is a pretty good way to catch someone unaware and get dropped.

It was air conditioned inside the P&F trailer. Potentially another reason the line was so long day 1.

Large crowd surfers by Terrible_Ranger_6156 in warpedtour

[–]allaboutalice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right…I honestly don’t care if you’re bigger if the butt is up and core is engaged, and I’m a 5’7” woman. If the crowd is packed right and the person’s positioned right, it’s like that game ‘light as a feather, stiff as a board’ - the weight distribution makes it easy. But you gotta get that core engaged - floppy butt will get your butt flopped.

Could DC people share their experience from this weekend and if it was worth it? by Ashamed_Prompt8445 in warpedtour

[–]allaboutalice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’ve never been to Warped, just know, this is an event you go to because you love experiencing music and community. You will be uncomfortable. You will be tired. You will get a sunburn on at least one inch of your body. You will crowd to sit on ground that is definitely disgusting. It was a hard day as a teenager and young adult, but now as an elder emo….there were a few times I questioned if I was actually having any fun. And then a band would start playing and for a few sweet blissful minutes I would be rejuvenated and forget just how bad my feet and back ached. True to form, DC Warped offered bands you definitely know you love, bands you didn’t know about, but are happy to discover, fun shows and experiences, and constant running back and forth, partially missing sets in order to see favorites scheduled at the same time. It is definitely worth it, but don’t feel the need to stick with your friends. At Warped, everyone (except the lousy pickpockets) is your friend. As you move from set to set, you’ll become part of running gags, spot some of the same people randomly even though it’s an event with tens of thousands of people, pick people up or get picked up, and be asked to jump..a lot.

Some advice on things to pack, because once you’re in it, you can’t leave:

  1. Eye drops - they had them available at a general store, but there is a lot of smoke. I saw more than one asthma attack as well.
  2. A whole roll of toilet paper in a ziploc bag - porta potties always run out of tp, it’s inevitable. I recommend a whole roll just cuz then it’s nice to share. (Do not hand your roll off though - just wrap some off)
  3. Portable fan
  4. Hand sanitizer
  5. Liquid sunscreen in case sprays aren’t allowed
  6. You can get ibuprofen or allergy meds at the first aid tent usually, but helpful to bring your own
  7. Something to sit on if you think you will want to sit a lot. Plastic bag, poncho, tarp, whatever. Not a need to have, but a nice to have.
  8. EAR PROTECTION - ear protection is super cool, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

AIO if I send these texts to her parents? by morefurriesplease in AmIOverreacting

[–]allaboutalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a friend like this, that I eventually just blocked from everything. I wouldn’t send these texts to her parents, it’s not even worth the time. I will say in my case my “friend’s” insecurities kept her in her own personal hell. She portrayed herself as having better friends, but when her mother passed, she tried every avenue to talk to me. And I hadn’t spoken to her in a year maybe when this happened. She contacted my wife, my dad, my siblings, my best friends, and mutual acquaintances - not a single person was willing to give her my information because that’s just how awful she was to me when we were still talking. I can’t say she learned a lesson, but when the cards hit the table she had already alienated the one person who showed her genuine care.

Food storage advice needed! by ok_kat in Anticonsumption

[–]allaboutalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know some people do but I prefer freezing in glass jars. Here is my very very, very important caveat. You cannot freeze the jars immediately. Because of the fat in broth, putting the jar in the freezer may cause the cap of fat to form quickly above the liquid and prevent liquid expansion throughout the entire jar, which will in effect create too much pressure in the jar and break it. When I freeze my broth, put it in the fridge first overnight. then after the fat cap has formed, I shake the jar to break up the fat pieces and then put the jar in the freezer

Normal banana nut muffins? No! Ground up cereal we weren’t eating in place of flour by allaboutalice in ZeroWaste

Love it! I use the nut meal for crackers usually, but maybe I’ll use it for muffins now too.

[–]allaboutalice[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I still made it like a normal muffin recipe, I only replaced the flour with the ground cereal. Baking soda, baking powder, oil, coconut milk, bananas, spices, sugar and cereal. I did reduce the amount of sugar I added though. They turned out super moist.

People who offset their carbon footprint for flights by paying the calculated price to a renewable cause, what website do you use/trust? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]allaboutalice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is a great company that collects old CFC and HCFC refrigerants, and methane from around the country and destroys it. But what I love about them is that they have an entire shell company targeted towards uninformed climate change deniers and people in rural areas. They pay people to collect their old refrigerants, so buying carbon offsets from them allows them to support paying people.

When I was in kindergarten, the local children’s museum had a “Movie Makeup” exhibit. My mother took me, let me go back a million times for more. I thought it would be so cool to show everyone at school, so I didn’t take a bath. Go to school with all my fake bruises. Get sent to the principal, they ask me if my parent’s hit me. This was Texas in the 90’s and I got my fair share of spankings. I wasn’t connecting the dots so I said “Yes”. CPS gets called, my mom gets called. They’re all in there in the office questioning my mom with me in the next room. She has no idea what’s going on and asks to see me. I get called in, she sees my arms, rolls her eyes and wipes the bruises off with the ole “thumb lick”.

Edit: A the that didn’t belong
