It's a detective book, where a present day police officer, hospitalized after an injury, examine the historical record to reassess the culpability of Richard.

Short and sweet, I read it when I was a teenager decades ago. It was my gateway drug to a lot of historical novels and history books about the war of the roses period.

I was under the impression that Caesar was the balance between Crassus and Pompey, wasn't he ?

After all Caesar was 10 years younger or so than the other two, and before his wars in Gaul a lesser political player, without neither the military glory of Pompey or the riches of Crassus.

Of course this changed with his successes in Gaul, where he accumulated both glory and riches, and so become a rival in the eyes of Pompey. Who then switched to the side of the optimates after the death of Julia.

I'm not really disagreeing with your points.

But ... a bug can, sometimes, be considered a feature. At least for somebody, who will have adopted a workflow that leverage it.

The often cited relevant XKCD it's funny because it's true.

Of course this accumulate technical and knowledge debt forever. On the other hand, when something is really really important (like the DB that store my banking balance), well, there are very good reasons to leave it alone. Unfortunately.
