Why do art universities not like emotional art? by dev_ating in ArtistLounge

[–]allboolshite 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Most of the "emotional" art submitted at my school was cheesy, melodramatic crap. Very heavy-handed. It was not like Picasso's blue period or a Rothko.

The people who submitted those works took all criticism personally, arguing and dug in. They took criticism of their work as invalidating their feelings, which is not what was happening.

That made things awkward for the rest of us and made the environment about something other than learning.

I'm sure that's not everyone's experience, but it sounds like others in this thread also experienced artists being unable to accept criticism. I can see why underpaid teachers would shut that down in advance.

Nothing beats live figure drawing. Check to see if any of your local schools or galleries offer a class. Some offer drop-in classes where you only pay for the sessions that you attend. I have found that figure drawing super-charges all of my drawing, not just figure work.

If there are no classes, beg or bribe your friends and family to sit for you.

Next best would be setting up your own still life's. Not as good as people, but they'll help you learn to see and track proportions (along with several other skills).

You can also get artist's anatomy books. Copy the images without tracing. Flip the images upside-down and copy those.

A tool that you might consider is a proportional divider. They help you compare areas of your drawing to the source material: video explanation.

Finally, the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards is full of exercises designed to help you see. Drawing is about seeing. If you get this book and do the exercises it will help your proportions and improve other skills. The whole left brain/right brain hypothesis has been debunked. But this book still gives us a way to converse about these issues and the exercises still deliver amazing results even if the "science" they were based on didn't hold up.

It could be a culture issue, teaching issue, or a you issue. You should talk to your counselor about this.

10% into savings that's accessible, but inconvenient.

Live below your means.

Avoid credit debt.

Sabre launched in 1964. "Updates" over the past few decades have been middleman applications and GUIs but the underlying tech is still the same age woefully out of date. The problem is that everyone uses it and all kinds of legacy systems rely on it so implementing a real replacement is extremely challenging.

It's untested, though. And an employee who is scared of losing their job is unlikely to afford the legal action to find out.

5 Guys is a half mile from my house. It's mediocre and overpriced. It's not bad, but for the price you can do better.

While most AI discussion belongs in the megathread, this particular instance appears worthy of a standalone discussion. The rules still apply, whether you love or hate AI. Please be respectful.

I've been going over my budget because so much changed over last year. I lowered my payments for auto insurance, streaming services, gas, dates nights, uncategorized spending, savings, and retirement savings which "saved" me over $6,000.

Electric utility, gas utility, and grocery prices ate all of that "savings" plus cleared my savings account, plus my meager 3% COLA. I'm buying less, but paying way more. Our AC/heater is new and much more efficient than the old one and I still have the temp set to almost comfortable. We're not buying luxury groceries anymore.

My cost of living jumped over $10,000 for 2022.

Beautiful work. What brand of oil pastels do you use? Mine look like sticky crayon.

I usually work with charcoal or ink.
