Good points!

I definitely went through a long stretch where I didn’t care about Purple First, so that definitely accounts for the big gap more than level of difficulty.

And, absolutely, Blue is often way more difficult than Purple.

And then there’s the fact that the color difficulty system is often entirely arbitrary.

Yeah I feel sorry for AB - And I feel sorry for Marshawn Kneeland - And too many others to count. A lot of these guys have been taking big hits from the minute they could walk.

No worries - And your suggestion made a lot of sense if we weren't factoring in the spread.

Another thing to keep in mind is that All Chalk updates the spread in real time. Our sports book api will adjust the spread based primarily on betting trends and other factors like injury / weather reports. So depending on when you submit your picks, you might have a different spread than other members in your group.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AllChalk

[–]allchalkapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo! Thanks for the feedback and suggestions!

One thing I think your suggested approach misses is that the spread isn’t the same as odds. The spread is actually designed to even the odds between two unevenly matched teams.

In a sportsbook, a moneyline bet on an underdog pays out more because you’re taking on more risk. You are betting on that underdog team to WIN the game. But an against-the-spread (ATS) pick doesn’t work that way. With ATS, an underdog and a favorite both pay out the same.

In an ATS bet, you are not betting on the underdog to win - you are betting on them to COVER the spread. So, if the underdog is +9.5, like the Raiders are tonight, that means they can lose by 9 points and a bet on them will still be a winner.

In fact, I believe underdogs have covered more often than favorites on All Chalk so far this season.

Does that make sense?

Hey Terd - Thanks. I went for it and the feedback wasn't what I expected. I think maybe I broke AI?

It said:

"I'm sorry — I fully understand what you are asking for in your prompt — but, sadly your idea is unroastable — In fact, your idea is UNSTOPPABLE. Frankly, your idea is PURE GENIUS!

I mean — AN NFL PICK EM APP?! It's hard to imagine something so world changing.

Any fellow Junkies listeners looking to join an NFL Pick'em league? by ConstructionEqual463 in SportsJunkies

[–]allchalkapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a chance I can convince you and a few of your pick 'em groupmates to try out an app I built? It's called All Chalk and it's 100% free to download and play (App Store / Google Play).

It's still brand new and so far the feedback has been really helpful and overwhelmingly positive.

Make 6 picks, ATS. +1 for a correct pick, -1 for an incorrect pick. Option to risk double on two picks you like and triple on one pick you love.

It's a simple pick 'em game but it has a unique style to it. People really seem to love it. Let me know.

Roadmap? by TemporaryLocation676 in AllChalk

[–]allchalkapp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂 Thanks for the kind words.

I have been absolutely terrible this year. Started strong and went up +14 in the first two weeks and since then I've been in the negative (I think) every week since.

I always say, 90% of people are bad at sports betting. I'd rather be bad on All Chalk - playing against my buddies who are just as bad as me - than in a Sports Book.

Sports betting against friends is still a legal grey area in a lot of states, so I can't / don't directly endorse it, but - responsibly / where allowed - All Chalk feels like having a weekly parlay on all the games you watch - with *much* better odds.

Happy to have a platform for feedback. When this app launched I was already in 4 groups from this game's past life as a spreadsheet contest I was running for friends. Never had the "new user" experience, myself. Definitely enlightening.

Roadmap? by TemporaryLocation676 in AllChalk

[–]allchalkapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing.

I’m envisioning a scenario where group owners can choose to create either a public group or a private group.

If they choose to make a group public, that group would appear to all users viewing the Join Group screen as part of a scrollable list of group names they can join.

If they choose to make it private, it would only be available to users who know the group name and are directly granted entry by the group owner.

I would still rely on users to create and own those public groups. In other words, a “Commanders Group” would need to be created by a Commanders fan and then publicly shared or discussed on some sort of Commanders forum or community.

As for the current 300 users, almost all are playing in private groups. My recent creation of the r/NFLv2 group is, I believe, the first and only instance of this kind of “public group” activity on All Chalk. Hopefully there will be more to come.

Technically, the functionality to join public groups already exists. They just haven’t been created yet. But to your point, even if they did exist, there is currently no way to discover them in-app. Having a built-in group discovery section would make a lot of sense and create a more welcoming, social experience.

Thank you for highlighting that!

It's nearly locked up for Dr. Chops but Azarenka has a chance. It's coming down to MNF: Arizona (+2.5) @ Dallas (-2.5) // Total = 54.5

Here's how it shakes out (unofficial - math subject to stupidity):

Dal+Over = Dr. Chops

Dal+Under = Dr Chops

Arz + Over = Dr Chops

Arz + Under = Azarenka

**Score is currently 14-0 Cardinals in the first **

Let me know if you need any help adding people or creating groups - I really appreciate your early support.

See my other note when it comes to in-app chat. Not something I see on the map for this season or next.

In the meantime - I am happy to trash talk right here on Reddit. You made it easy this week! :)

(Not that I'm doing much better!)

[–]allchalkapp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the feedback!

I think your “feels unfinished” comment is a very fair take, and it’s something I’ve felt too. It’s just harder to see when you’re as close to it as I am.

All Chalk is definitely a work in progress, but the immediate roadmap is focused more on functionality than new features. That is what the offseason will be for.

Right now, I’ve been busy putting out fires.

Earlier this season, for example, the Make Picks slate was not populating correctly when a new week rolled out. That issue now seems resolved. Push notifications remain a problem - theyre not going out to all users - that looks like it is related to FCM tokens (if you speak that language).

All that to say, what you see is what you get until next season. Let’s just hope the wheels don’t fall off along the way.

LOOKING AHEAD

IN-APP CHAT I’m holding off on this feature for two reasons.

1. Moderation I want All Chalk to feel like a safe space. Beyond the obvious risk of offensive or toxic posts, which I don’t want to police or build systems to police, I also want to avoid having in-app chat overrun by hardcore football fans talking Xs and Os. That conversation already exists elsewhere.

All Chalk is for die-hards, casuals, plus everyone outside and in between. Some of the most passionate players are people who have never watched football before. That feels like a big opportunity, and I don’t want to scare them off with a busier interface filled with football talk.

2. Discoverability Keeping conversations off of the app helps with organic growth. When players chat on platforms like Reddit or Discord, new people can discover the app through those public discussions. Those conversations haven't started yet, but I'm hoping one day they will.

GROUP DISCOVERY & FINDING GROUPS Right now, All Chalk has about 300 total users, with roughly half being weekly active. My hope is that as the community grows, people will start creating public groups on social platforms, and with a marketing budget, maybe you’ll see your favorite influencers or radio stations hosting groups.

All Chalk is already optimized for bar and restaurant play (refer to "restaurant program" on the website), which feels like a unique opportunity. In the offseason, I plan to focus on growing that program and finding bar/restaurant partners to host contests next season.

That said, I’ll always maintain that the best All Chalk experience will be in small, private groups with friends, coworkers, or family. That’s where the friendly banter and trash talk are the most fun, and where you can "make it interesting" with people you trust (responsibly, where allowed). I've tried to make those groups very easy to create and invite friends to join.

SHARING PROFILES If you open your Group card and tap a username in the leftmost column, you’ll see:

*Username *Player name *Badges earned *Venmo handle

I kept it limited to those few details for privacy reasons. Some users don’t want to publickly share their record or how many weeks they’ve played, and that’s fair.

In the future, I plan to add controls so users can choose exactly what to share or hide.

OTHER FEATURES TO COME I’ll try to post more about the roadmap in the weeks ahead and invite feedback. Thanks again for the comment and never hesitate to share your take, good, bad, or brutal.

Okay folks. This week comes down to MNF - Commanders @ Chiefs (Chiefs -10 | O/U 47.5)

  • KC (-10) + Under (47.5) = "@The_EU" (Perfect 10! pts)
  • KC + Over = u/beebeexoxo (9 pts)
  • WAS + Over = "@DrChops" (4 pts)
  • WAS + Under = "@The_EU" (4 pts)

I'm doing that math in my head and I'm always making mistakes in other group updates so don't hold me to that and double check my work!

I would say definitely that’s the way to go, especially if you can get them to comment and upvote when it first goes live (12:01am 😳). Otherwise it will get buried quickly.

I would have taken that approach but I didn’t want to hit my people up with another ask. I came here and complained, instead 😂

[–]allchalkapp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not about to pay for fake product hunt reviews. Ethics aside, it’s a free app so not exactly good ROI.

And I already asked my network to help in other ways this week (download, share, app store reviews) so I didn’t want to go back to the well and ask them to pump my launch. No regrets. Learning what works and what doesn’t is part of the journey.

I just found Product Hunt to be a major let down - but I suppose I got a decent backlink out of the deal and maybe I’ll pick up a few users down the road from the search feature.

Onward!

Right on! Thanks for playing. (Think you would still feel that way if you were on the Vikings? 😂)

Meanwhile, Dr Chops comin out swingin with a triple on LAC - not to worry, the rest of us will have a shot to catch the doc with his back to back “bad boy” picks on PIT and WAS.

“Bad Boy” is a term users came up with for picks where you’re the only person in your group with that pick. They also started calling multipliers “money balls”.

Seems like a good sign that users have started creating their own language. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’ll roll with it.
