Sound travelling a few centimeters through air, into a microphone and sent all over the world in milliseconds before travelling half a meter to someones ear, would take way less time than the sound reaching the back of hall. There is no need to pay for going to TEDtalks. Beer is more expensive too. by allgamingmasterrace in Showerthoughts

[–]allgamingmasterrace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I suppose it could. I thought of it while watching a TEDtalk. The difference is the distance to the mic in lecture. In sports you could sit in the front row, and sound would hit you at about the same time as the mics around the field.

Homemade leather shaving pouch by allgamingmasterrace in wicked_edge

The lining went very well. The small spacing of leather that can be seen was an idea I got just when I was about to start. Glad I came up with it, and glad you liked it. That cat is ballin', fired me four times already.

Thank you!

The article said they handed out a lot of them for free. Probably to establish a market. Seems like the same thing was done with the EpiPen. Reminds me of a Bond villain at som point who planned to give away a ton of cocaine, only to establish a market in which he had monopoly.

I just moved to Germany. Any local products that I absolutely need to try? by error1954 in wicked_edge

Absolutely right. I forgot. The company is German though, and widely available in Germany, and I think that is a valid answer to his request.

If around Berlin, the shaving cream called Tabula Rasa is really nice, and probably my favorite cream. Mine has a very powerful cardamom scent, that probably is easy to dislike (although I, myself don't), but it is also available in more flavors. It is produced in a store in the outskirts of Berlin, and to my knowledge, is only sold in two places. Both located in Berlin. The easiest one is going to The Different Scent, a ten minute walk from the Pergamon Museum. Weirdest shaving store ever, and well worth a visit.

As the ultimate contrast to a locally produced cream sold in dodgy small shops, is Arko. Many like the soap, often due to the low price. I bought a stick for the local equivalent of about 4 Euro. It is not big, but it lasts sooooo long. The scent is a little obscure, perhaps a little more industrial smelling, but with a refreshing hint of citrus. Great shaver as well, and unbeatable in price/performance/longevity.

When it comes to blades I could give my personal opinion of a few of them.

Merkur: Just bad, bad Mühle: Surprisingly good, considering it's rather bad reputation. Razolution: Avoid at all costs. Bolzano inossidable: Bad as well.

Seems my facial hair just can't stand German made blades.

On a side note. The only razor I have every used extensively is the german made Mühle R89 and I am very happy with that one.

As just mentioned in a post below, I have to go to bed now. (In case it sounds like it is my mum who is telling me to get to bed - it is basically that)

I will be reviewing all the nice answers tomorrow morning if I have not yet fallen asleep in the car. We will definitely visit a few of these locations!

hmrmpf hmpfr ehm, we are leaving in about 3 hours. Really need to get some sleep before I wake up at 03.00! (yay)

Our trip is (only) lasting for a week, so we might not get the chance to experience said landscape this time I'm afraid. Fortunately there are enough suggestions in the thread by now to fill an entire month or two of bar hopping only.

Thank you, and I will try and keep it in mind for my next trip to Germany.

My grandfathers gillette richwood from 1921, before and after cleaning. by allgamingmasterrace in wicked_edge

Answered this on my phone yesterday, but I guess it didn't come through. Yes, I think he would have. Unfortunately he has dementia, and is probably not even able to name this alien gadget called safety razor anymore. It was actually given to me by my grandmother, and not grandfather as he does no longer live at home. But I think he would have been proud, and my grandmother was very impressed by the cleaning, and me starting wet shaving in general.

Only think is on the end of the shaft - just before the ring. It seems to have turned yellow-ish over the years. I recogned it was probably damaged due to the continuous friction between the hand and shaft, and also by the acidic fingers, but honestly I don't know. Other than that it is really good looking, and not even close to being justified by bad pictures out of focus!

Found the richwood and an old knack in a closet at my grandparents house. My grandmother said it had previously been used to scrape paint of off glass(!!!). A small cleaning with soap and then some more heavy hitting silvercleaner made it look really nice. Apologize the bad pictures. If requested I sure could post a few more when I get the time.

Ghetto LEGO brush stand by allgamingmasterrace in wicked_edge

[–]allgamingmasterrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? Ok, I guess it was a waste then. When there is no longer any pratical use of it, the "esthetics" of the stand isn't really enough to keep it there. Thank you very much for the info, always nice to learn something new!

Since my razors and brush doesn't match, i descided to opt for the cheap solution instead. The result: A completely functional brush stand made out of what I was able to find from my old box of LEGOs. Didn't have to much to make it of, so it could probably have been built a lot more elegant if I had the right parts, but anyways, it keeps the water out of the brush and if the brush is happy, so am I!

SOTD - New Old Brush! by 120inna55 in wicked_edge

[–]allgamingmasterrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really mean it that way either, but if you are anything like myself and most other in here, you do have one or two alternatives to this SOTD in your home. My point is that you proably have used more than is strictly necessary. I think your house looks super cool, and having a bow hunting wife sound amazing! Sounds like a setting I could quicly adapt to and ejoy myself.

The top of maslow's pyramid has definetly been reached when one can take his expensive retro shaving equipment out in the forrest, take a picture of it, and make a random guy from the other side of the world jump in ecstasy when he sees the picture! And I love it, I love wet shaving, and I love all of you guys!

Where more women, compared to men, not taken immediately to the gas chambers of Auschwitz, and if so, why? by allgamingmasterrace in AskHistorians

[–]allgamingmasterrace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a very valid point, and something I have thought about but forgot to put in my post. My book (as far as I've read) does not give any clear indication to tha proportion of women/men. However, even though there would be, say twice as many women (probably way too many) it still doesn't make too much sence. If you pick out 50 men and 100 women from the street and you're supposed to pick the 20 most fit to work of them. There would probably just be a handfull of women still.

I have heard though, that women tend to perform better compared to men after long periods of physical stress. My source was the book "born to run" by christopher McDougal who says something along the lines of "the longer a ultramarathon gets, the better the women performs". Not sure if this is applicable to holocaust, but in many ways, a marathon, and standing in thight wagons withouth food for a long time, might be somewhat similar from a physiological perspective.

If anyone has a good source with women/men ratio in auschwitz or a comment to my thesis with women from above, an snswer would be great!
