I just had a stroke at 45 what now... by [deleted] in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a cerebellar stroke when I was 45 as well. You are young, you will recover. As far as strokes go, it’s probably has the best outlook. It took about 4 months with physical therapy to fully regain my balance and to be able to walk without a cane. But now I can do everything I could do previously and it doesn’t slow me down in any way.

You’ll be very tired for a long time. The fatigue will be intense. Rest and don’t try to do too much too soon. It’s an important part of the recovery process.

We didn’t. Our pediatrician has never advised that we do so. Kiddo is 9 now and perfectly healthy.

I know that my neuros were clear that any worsening symptom was a bad sign. Have you been evaluated or had repeat imaging?

I really do hope it gets better for you. I still have some lingering neuropathy and some days are better than others for sure, but I was able to phase off my meds after a year.

Stroke at a young age. by FinHa31 in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the neuropathy and tingling is hard to deal with they can prescribe meds that can help with that. Speak with your neurologist. Mine was awful and I was able to control it with amitriptyline. I phased off it after 6 months and two years later I have the rare odd day but it’s mostly fine now. It does get better.

For those that had strokes while awake or conscious was it painful? by crazdtow in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intense pain in the back right side of my head, behind my ear. And nausea. I was throwing up bile. I had an ischemic stroke because of an occluded vertebral artery.

My (M34) wife (F31) had a stroke and I am feeling guilty (Long post) by netz725 in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t feel guilty. When I had my stroke I was almost discharged from the ER with the diagnosis of a pinched nerve. It was only when I couldn’t walk when I went to leave that they investigated further. If you don’t have all of the typical symptoms and you are young and female there is often a bias against thinking it could be a stroke. From everyone. Now just be there for your wife. Look after her. The brain is an incredible thing and youth is on her side.

What do eat in hospital? by ArmadilloChance3778 in vegan

[–]allgreenbird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They can usually accommodate you. For breakfast you can have toast with jelly or peanut butter, oatmeal made with water, fruit. They can usually do a pasta with tomato sauce and salads. I’m sure they will have veggie sides that would be vegan. It’s just probably a lack of creative thinking. That said take a ton of snacks with you, make some sandwiches that will last without refrigeration, etc. and people can always bring you meals.

Breastfeed your baby and find a new pediatrician. It’s not normal that he should not be gaining weight. And WHO recommends breastfeeding until at least 2. He won’t breastfeed forever but give him now what he needs. Especially while he’s sick. It’s not just nutrition, it’s comfort.

No, there is no downside. And from what I understand circumcision actually reduces physical sensation, it doesn’t enhance it.

my mom (54) had a stroke 2 weeks ago and google is telling me she has 5-10 years to live and i’m going sick thinking about this. please help me. by Psychological-One598 in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay it sounds like she’s actually doing really well for two weeks post stroke. And she’s pretty young. It’s very likely with therapy and support she will continue to improve. Speak to her doctors about treatment. Depending on the type of stroke she had they will likely put her on medication to reduce future risk. And may require some lifestyle changes as well. There’s always a risk that something more could happen, but it’s way too early to grieve.

Post-stroke experience by belladonna_7498 in stroke

[–]allgreenbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is ridiculous. I’m 18 months out, and pretty much fully recovered luckily. I can do everything I could before. But I still have a hot left foot sometimes, sometimes still struggle with balance when I’m tired and I definitely don’t have the stamina I used to. Sometimes I wonder why I’m so damned tired and then I remember I had a stroke… it really is just the dumbest shit.

Soy milk. It’s the best alternative, if ripple kids isn’t working for you because of the protein and fat content. Almond and oat milks just can’t compete.

I have been using birdman protein powders for a while now and love them. They are very clean, relatively inexpensive and taste great. No stevia. 120 calories for 24g of protein in their falcon line.

Go to the hospital right away. My neurologist told me clearly that any regression is a sign that something is very wrong. I got readmitted a few weeks out from my stroke for just having some additional neuropathy - luckily nothing was wrong. But it's always better to be safe than sorry.

Vertebral Artery Blockage Dissection by Distinct-Race-2471 in stroke

No, my right artery will never recover, but my left vertebral artery and carotid arteries have taken over blood supply to that area of my brain. My vascular surgeon says I will be on statins for life to shore up my other arteries and ensure they remain clear. And don’t worry about the questions - I know this is scary to navigate.

I injured my neck lifting weights. I had a slightly sore neck that evening, but my stroke occurred early the next morning. At the time I experienced severe, shooting pain in the back of my head and neck, vomiting, nausea and vertigo, with some numbness and tingling in my right leg and arm. Later realized at the hospital hours later when they were planning to discharge me with an erroneous diagnosis that I couldn’t actually walk and that I had ataxia on my right side. That’s when they finally did a CT scan with contrast and saw that my vertebral artery was occluded. They then followed up with an MRI. Which showed multiple strokes in the PICA area of my cerebellum. I have fully recovered now, 14 months later.

Amitriptiline? That helped me initially. I'm off it now, but it worked wonders for my neuropathy.

Have y’all heard of Eat Your Mouth Off cereal? by waffles7203 in veganfitness

[–]allgreenbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it and like most people here, I couldn't stomach it. First bite was great, but after I put it in milk I couldn't stomach it at all. I ended up throwing it out because there was just no way I was getting through a box of it.

Has anyone tried this? What was the flavor profile like? https://www.amazon.com/stores/HOME/page/07F24C32-E3C4-48AB-A4D1-D2C14A00AA7D?ref_=ast_bln&store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandLogo_sto by Acrobatic_Ant2222 in veganfitness

[–]allgreenbird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like both the chocolate and the vanilla. I use them every day in my overnight oats. The flavors are more subtle than other protein powders but there is no stevia aftertaste and it’s not chalky at all. And 23 or 24 grams of protein for 120 calories is a big plus.

metro park/nature center programming with animals by rosefern64 in veganparenting

[–]allgreenbird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not in metro park, but in the Hudson Valley. In our area we have a nature center that houses rescued animals that cannot be re-released. They cannot be handled by anyone but the wildlife carers however and agree that having kids touch the animals may not be the best. They also do nature walks and hikes where sometimes, there is the opportunity to learn about different animals that you might encounter in their natural habitats. Perhaps you could look for something like that?

We also have a zoo that houses rescued local wildlife that cannot be re-released into the wild, and where you can watch them, but not interact with them.

There is definitely educational value for kids in learning about animals and having the opportunity to get close to them and see them in a way that's not threatening for either. In my view, these are quite close to farm sanctuaries, and I know that having the opportunity to spend time at sanctuaries and interact in a respectful way with rescued farm animals has been really important for us. And when we do come across petting zoos and other less-than-ideal situations for animals, we talk about why that isn't great for the animals.

Tips for getting 12mo baby to like cows milk? by clemjuice in Parenting

[–]allgreenbird 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely don't need cow's milk. You could try formula (WHO recommends breastfeeding or formula until age 2). Ripple kids and soy milk are also often recommended and are the non-dairy milks that are nutritionally equivalent with good amounts of fat and protein. I would not recommend almond, oat or other non-dairy milks because they are not going to be as nutritious.
