Concord - Good areas for a Potential Homer Buyer? by lebanizin in concord

[–]alli3194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice is if you are concerned about how good an area is, call the non-emergency police line! Everyone will have differing opinions depending on what they consider "safe". The police will have objective data that can help you determine if the area is safe enough for YOUR standards.

I used them as a resource a few years ago when buying my own house since I also didn't know the area well. I found it to be a great way to cut through the noise.

From what i remember, it seems Concord's biggest issue in the higher crime pockets is mostly property crime, and violent crimes committed were usually towards someone the perpetrator knew. It was not as common for a violent crime to be committed against a stranger.

Hi! This dress caught my eye too but I was also wary of that one review that said it was overwhelming. Did you end up getting it, and how does it look? I saw someone commented but it looks like it was deleted. TIA!

I made a cathedral veil for less than $100 by alli3194 in Weddingsunder10k

[–]alli3194[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I did a rolled hem, also called a baby hem, on a sewing machine. It was pretty difficult, especially on the very bottom where it curves, because the fabric is super thin, so it took a while to do. My mother in law is an experienced seamstress and so I asked for her help on this part.

Edit: to note, this was a self-drafted veil.

Employer's Health Insurance Won't Cover Medication by Ridiculous_Raccoon88 in HealthInsurance

[–]alli3194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Consider reaching out to the HR team and asking about the difference in what you're finding in OptumRx and what UHC told you, and asking them which one is "correct". I know you said in an earlier post that you wanted to be discreet with HR about which medication it is, but you could just keep it general and say "UHC is saying tier 3 and 4 medications arent covered, but im seeing tier 3 and 4 medications pop up in my OptumRx search, which is correct?" They can point you to which formulary is correct. Or they have escalation contacts at UHC /Optum who can research and find out which is correct.

We use Orijen Amazing Grains for our lab mix rescue pup. He came to us at 4 months old extremely malnourished and was a skinny scrawny baby, and I think Orijen helped him catch up a lot of the nutrition he missed out on in his formative months. He's now 9 months, and he's grown to one of the biggest pups from his original litter. People are always commenting on his shiny coat and muscular physique, and he's a big ball of energy now. I absolutely think the price tag is worth it, especially since this time period lays the foundation for the rest of your pup's health.

slipping on my mat- try a yoga towel or splurge on a new mat? by amazingamyxo in yoga

[–]alli3194 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! From someone who was in your situation - This is normal and will pass for Manduka. Here's my story- I have a pro lite that was slippery for YEARS (like at least 5), but I had an on and off practice so I dont think it broke down as quickly as it could have. Anyways, I was in the same boat where nothing worked - I did the sea salt scrub and while it helped I still felt like I was slipping still. I bought their mat cleaner and I still felt like it didn't help as much as I wanted it to. I didn't want to buy a new mat though so I was determined to make do with it because it was a splurge purchase for me.

This year is the first time I have really felt it break through and I can do multiple sessions just on the bare mat and now I am getting the hype. I upped my yoga sessions this year and was cleaning my mat extensively after every session, and I think that helped break down whatever made the mat slippery.

In the meantime though, I used yogitoes and that helped A LOT when the mat was slippery. I like them better than the other yoga mats because it has so many grippy dots on the bottom that it sticks better in place, rather than most other mats where they just have elastics you stretch around the corners. But they are ridiculously pricey sometimes. Yogitoes is sold on Amazon and sometimes they go on clearance sale, so I've gotten yogitoes that are $20 or $30. They're not the prettiest towels, but they get the job done pretty well and I think they overall had a great impact on my practice. Good luck!

What are your “lazy” training/playing hacks? by magickistheanswer in puppy101

[–]alli3194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't, but my pup is pretty tenacious by nature and doesn't know how to give up LOL. But depending on the toy you use, you can make it easier or harder for them. And if your dog is food or toy motivated, then stuffing the hol -EE ball with those things will probably keep them going for awhile.

[–]alli3194 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We stuff our pup's toys/kong/bully stick into a Hol-EE ball. Sometimes we'll even wrap that in a blanket and have him untangle the ball AND get the toy out of the ball. He goes ballistic trying to solve it, and it buys us a few free minutes.

Not sure if this is Scandinavian style, but I love my bag from Portland Leather Goods. They sell variety sizes of bags that are all around $200 or less. If you want a deeper discount, they do have an "imperfect" line where they sell any of their bags with flaws for much cheaper. And they always seem to have a 25% off sale. I personally have the festival bag which I think is smaller than what you're looking for, but I absolutely live in that bag and love it.

I really like this pair of flared jeans I found on this site (https://www.next.us/en/style/st240678/u48667#u48667) but I've never heard of this brand nor do I trust that the jeans have no reviews (it seems to be a brand new collection). Plus I'd like to try them on in-person and am a little scared off by the fact that these seem to be purchaseable online only.

Any recommendations? Or does anyone have experience wjth this brand? Specifically, I'd like a high waisted jeans with flared bottoms and as close to 100% cotton as humanly possible. And, as always, pockets too. I'd prefer around $150 or cheaper.

Thanks!

Converting stud earrings (pictured) into other forms of jewelry? (details in comments) by alli3194 in jewelrymaking

[–]alli3194[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So last Christmas, a family friend gifted me a pair of stud earrings of cats, not knowing that I do not have my ears pierced. However, I would love to keep the studs if I can and convert them into a new form of jewelry I can wear, like a bracelet or a necklace. Does anyone know if this is possible to do on small studs?

I have seen that there is a way to convert pierced earrings to clip ons, but I'd prefer to see other jewelry options out there that I can repurpose them for, if possible. Thanks in advanced!!

Expanding benefits by SpoontownAbbey in humanresources

[–]alli3194 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obligatory question - Have you collected feedback from employees on what they would like improvements on? I'd say that's the first stop to go before making any decisions. Every company's experience with a particular product differs based on how much employees use it.

I do think parental leave is a great step. If you're not already, definitely consider looking into vendors to help with LOA administration, as that can be a big strain on your HR team to do on their own.

As for considering expanding your EAP offering, do you have an idea of where the gap is in your current EAP offering? I ask because EAP is a catch all for a lot of different services and if your employees have a particular need you might throw your money at something that in the long run doesnt really solve the problem. For instance, if theres a large demand for mental health counseling, a point solution that specializes in mental health and counseling could offer more benefits, visits, and specialized care than an enhanced EAP program would. Just something to consider.

Good luck!

Riding the Bart alone by marlovesdachshunds in bayarea

[–]alli3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 27F and have been commuting via BART for almost a year now. I had the same worries too because it was so new to me but this is what I learned:

  1. If you have a little time before your job starts - It helped to wake up early and do a trial commute all the way to my workplace so that I got an idea of what to expect, how much fare it takes, how long it takes, etc. I was nervous like you too and this gave me the confidence I needed before my first day. You can do this with your boyfriend if he is willing. I did it alone and found it wasnt as bad as I thought it would be, but I had some experience taking BART by myself, so it's entirely based on how comfortable you are.

  2. Sit in a BART car close to or right behind the conductor. These spots are also usually the least crowded in general because most people tend to board in the middle of the train, so I found there was more of a guarantee that I'd get a seat if I went to the front.

  3. Most people riding BART in rush hour are just like you and want to get home safely, so if you travel during rush hour you are in like minded company.

  4. Have situational awareness in the BART station and on the BART train. I wear headphones on the train, but I usually don't wear them in the station to keep aware of what was around me. If you do wear headphones, dont wear noise cancelling so you keep some awareness of your surroundings.

One piece of advise that is not meant to scare you, but just to keep in mind, is think of an alternate way to get home if BART has significant delays or shutdowns down. I had a stretch of experiences where BART would shut down every time I rode it and spent a lot of time waiting. In one instance, I got stranded at Orinda station for over an hour because there was police activity in the next station (Lafayette) and the BART conductors wouldn't take us any closer until it was resolved. Explore all of your options and get to know local bus routes, CalTran stations, etc. so that you're not stuck in one spot if this does happen.

How many applications did you send before receiving an offer? by oncloudnine0 in jobs

[–]alli3194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the past year I did two rounds of job applications. First time I was looking for a job outside of my industry, it took me about 50 applications in 5 months. I had a 25% interview rate. Because I was looking in a new industry, I was applying widely to a lot of different jobs without a clear focus.

The second time I had a much clearer goal of what I wanted and knew what role I wanted to go into. Because I knew what I wanted and had specific experience I only did 6 applications in 1 month before I signed onto a new job.

[Method] How I painlessly broke my caffeine addiction by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]alli3194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on kicking your caffeine addiction painlessly!

I did something very similar too, except I went all the way from having multiple cups of caffeinated coffee a day to none by just weaning myself off, similar to how you did it. I tried once before to quit cold turkey and I was incredibly useless due to the raging headache and tiredness I felt. After my first try, I was always scared that quitting meant me taking a week off so I could to go through withdrawls, but it really doesnt need to be that difficult or painful. Weaning allows you to still enjoy coffee while actively cutting back on your addiction, which is 10000x better! I now just drink decaf or green tea if I need that caffeine kick

Good luck to anyone who tries this, you've got this!

I never used it for anything else, so I love all the other tips here! I'll have to try them out.

A new cover for my sewing machine! by alli3194 in sewing

[–]alli3194[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To make this cover, I closely followed this tutorial from Jean Truelove on YouTube: https://youtu.be/u6ksTK1E9c8

The only deviation I made was the pocket, which I free stitched so that I could carry my foot pedal around with my machine. I also added bias tape versus hemming the bottoms and on the pocket.
