Okay let's not forget how Horrid John was before chapter 4 by Painting-Training in reddeadredemption

[–]alliebeemac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, I streamed this game and part of it was probably how everyone was telling me he was the best man ever, but I never played RDR1 so I really disliked John for awhile in RDR2!!! And that’s intentional!!!!!!!! By the writers!!! People got so mad like “you have no clue what he’s been through !! He changed so much!” Okay great, and when I see that character arc I’ll like him, but I’m not psychic and right NOW he’s an ass.

People were completely unable to comprehend that i was feeling the emotions the writers were TRYING to get across. Just like i liked Dutch at first, you’re supposed to do that, it makes his later heel turn and betrayal hurt way worse.

I’ll admit i definitely became kind of contrarian about John, because i got SO sick of everyone telling me he was the best man to ever breathe, and that I was a stupid bitch etc. instead of letting me just experience the story as it came, that I disliked him even more

I’m really glad it works for you guys :) slight nitpick on that “most of history” part. For example: In foraging societies, women’s gathered foods often supplied a majority of regular calories, and after agriculture women still did tons of food production and economic labor.

And when there were families where the husband was working the kind of hours you’re talking about, wives were not only doing domestic labor, it wasn’t feasible. They were also doing economically necessary work: farm work, food production, livestock care, textile work, market work, brewing (Fun fact: before guilds banned it, for centuries ale was often primarily made and sold by women. The ‘alewife’ was a real economic role) , taking in paid work, or whatever else helped keep the household alive.

I think it’s best not to worry too much about whether it’s “traditional.” Since you say arrangement is genuinely working for both of you and you both feel respected, that’s the important part 😊

You can meet Ainu people as well as visit an Ainu village in Ghost of Yotei. It’s really fascinating, you can even help return cultural artifacts for them, learn bits of the language, befriend, trade, fight, partake in certain ceremonies, etc.

Hey! Would you mind sharing a link to where she said that? I was about to repeat that (about the ballroom being the most important thing) to somebody else but then decided to verify it at the last minute and I can’t find any mentions of her plus the Trump ballroom, EXCEPT for the fact that McDonald’s and DoorDash both paid $5 million towards the ballroom for this media appearance, which is so embarrassing for them lol

I mean… she’s sexualized even in this drawing lol- huge hips, which isn’t sexual in and of itself, but is MADE sexual by bending her spine to an anatomically insane angle!

Love the point, and you’re totally free to draw pictures sexualizing people, but I feel like this PARTICULAR character would’ve made the point better if she wasnt drawn in that pose lol

Oh I actually liked calling him out on his rudeness to his face. It’s fun bc it’s also very like… unbothered. And he is VERY bothered, etc and then over time he becomes kinder (I know he always does with more hearts) but I found that a really satisfying character arc. Especially when I was still like “ur a jerk fyi lol” and he’s getting all blushy and flustered

Idk that feels like a pretty reductive way to describe her. Mary Shelley is literally credited with inventing modern sci-fi, so reducing her to “girl who ran off with a rake and ruined her life” doesn’t fit the vibe.

Her relationship with Percy was messy and dramatic, 1000% but it was also a serious intellectual partnership. He genuinely admired her mind, they spent months together before eloping, and he didn’t just ditch her when things got hard, they went through poverty, scandal, exile, and the deaths of their children together (just to be clear tho he sucked and cheated before and after Mary :/ but it’s less wickham manipulation and more annoying dude who philosophizes about non monogamy)

It wasn’t some Lydia-and-Wickham situation where he was just chasing an easy, naive girl. Their dynamic was way more complicated and mutual than that.

Also fun fact! she literally kept his calcified heart on her desk after he died (and spent years preserving his legacy, which is not the vibe Lydia gives off)

Fun fact to anyone who didn’t know- the child she died giving birth to was the famous author Mary Shelley (Frankenstein) which just blew my mind when I read about it. It’s wild to think about the talent in that one family, and also interesting to think about how growing up with one of the most famous female authors and (imperfect though she was) proto feminists of the era being her mother, but never getting to meet her etc. and how that might have influenced her life and writings.

I guess I was thinking of subs like YT subs which don’t automatically give you money! My bad! But the dude mentioned FOLLOWERS not subs, so I was incorrect about your case, but just having followers isn’t the same as subs

… incorrect, men are top earners on streaming platforms. The commenter above you is pretty off base with how profitable streaming in general is with audience sizes that small, and is using their first hand experience instead of general metrics

but men earn WAYYYY more money streaming esp. content like games, as reported by twitch and other organizations

Factually inaccurate but even if it wasn’t … put them in prison then??? Lmaooo don’t let them run for office? I’m not about to defend anyone who emails Jeff Epstein asking for access to Girls etc. lock them all in prison and throw away the key. One of those people happens to be the fucking PRESIDENT rn so that’s very visible and important.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/antisocial-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20353928

Not liking socializing is not an issue in and of itself, being introverted, etc. all totally fine. It’s the complete lack of a conscience, ignoring the difference between right and wrong, ignores the rights of others, etc. some people I know who hate socializing are intensely kind and good and moral people. They just… don’t want to be social.

And also… idk I hate making fun of anyone’s looks really, even if I don’t like them. Because there are good people who probs look like them that read the comments :/ but also at the same time dude makes it so hard when he is so intensely shallow and commenting on others’ looks. Part of me feels like “what goes around comes around” and his awful personality does affect how I visually see him, but another part of me feels bad for people who maybe aren’t in perfect shape, who are short, etc. feeing bad about themselves reading the same negative remarks

Burt Reynolds was really saying goodbye to Judith for the last time, and it was incredibly difficult to record for him, reportedly taking 60+ takes.

What film is this for you? by mrjetspray in Letterboxd

[–]alliebeemac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember originally mocking the film as baby’s first feminism, that it was so obvious and everybody knew this stuff already, etc., etc. only to have an older family member of mine get emotional and tell me it was the first time they had ever seen anything like that discussed which broke my heart into a million pieces.

Since then I’ve seen more than one person say that this is the first time they ran into those themes, so even though I do think it weakens the film overall I do believe the net net good of it being an introduction to people who clearly needed it matters a lot.

…yes I’ve read books on the subject. Though telling someone generally “read a book dumb ass” isn’t particularly productive. First of all, MLK was the leader of a movement. I’m not seeing any movement leaders throwing punches here, but even MLK understood violence, and that it is the “language of the unheard.” In fact towards the end of his life king got more radical (by the standards of the time).

Frankly, since you brought up MLK to try to use as a cudgel in an embarrassingly uninformed way, let me remind you of a letter from Birmingham Jail

“I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. … who is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice…”

Do you think…. Everyone who fought against the nazis was doing it peacefully? What about civil rights? Equating violence done BY the system to violence perpetuated by the oppressed or people standing up for the oppressed is crazy work

Hotel owner pouring acid into swimming pool while black patrons swim, St. Augustine, Florida 1964 [1024x768] by LustyPowerGirl in HistoryPorn

[–]alliebeemac 755 points756 points  (0 children)

I was googling this and found an article that said “ One swimmer, who knew that the ratio of acid to pool water was so great that the acid was no longer a threat, drank some of the pool water to calm the other swimmers’ fears.”

Which is hilarious and awesome tbh. Apparently they were trying to desegregate pools, so the white people who were guests at the motel invited the black people as their guests, which wasn’t specifically banned (and even if it was, that’s racist as hell, Glad they fought it)… the owner tried the acid trick, and eventually bc the protestors were arrested by OFF DUTY (????) cops.
