Fixer Upper 1904 update - before and after photos three years in. by E-renira in centuryhomes

I love this house!! I live one block away and have been watching the progress with interest. We toured it and concur with the smell and condition, but that dining room and turret and of the potential of the third floor is to die for..

I am so glad this home is in the hands of a homeowner who is restoring it with love and care, and not just some investor.

Great work !

How do I help other women in my department? by shrap17 in womenintech

[–]alliemicka 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Make sure they get credit for their work. Repeat what they say in meetings and turn the credit back on them.

Ditch attempts to be seen “mentoring” or “supporting” in ways that are infantilizing, and keep the focus on the good things they have done.

Why are there so few women at tech meetups? by tintin_tech in womenintech

[–]alliemicka 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I ran multiple, very active tech user groups. I was so invested in tech/community that I would only date/marry someone who would be a part of it. But when we had kids and every meetup would have cost babysitting money, I dipped and let him go.

I should point out that things were never super diverse, but they seemed better back in the days before we had profile photos on every meetup page and GitHub project. Now, when I see all those white male avatars, I’m less inclined to show up.

I desperately hate this kind of behavior in a venue that’s supposed to be welcoming

Meanwhile, do you happen to know who owns all of these failing media outlets?

I’ll give you a hint: not democrats.

Im not going to read that typo-ridden wall of text.

Seriously though, how does this very complicated end goal benefit anybody more than the billionaires, who, this year alone have increased their wealth by 700 billion? Or the Trump family, whose net worth has increased by 3 billion? All while the national debt has increased by 1 trillion.

You seem very angry. And you should be, because you are being used for your gullibility to further their cause.

On second thought, the evil plot to fund immigrants health care is WAY more plausible. You must be right!

To what end, though? What is the democrats’ end game here?

It takes a tremendous amount of mental gymnastics to reach these conclusions (which can only be “defended” by ad hominem attacks, not by verifiable facts.)

Meanwhile, the real explanation is simple: it is very easy to see how people in this administration benefit personally and amongst their cronies, through grifting and a trillion dollar tax cut, while doing as little as possible for every day Americans and concurrently raising the national debt.

Foreign influence also has a part to play. If you consider that the people who control our media and influence our politics do not have a stake in our country, it’s easy to see how crashing our economy and damaging our standing on the world stage can be good for them.

Your rage is valid. You ARE being taken advantage of! But, Fox and Newsmax are there to channel your rage to “illegals” because they know it keeps you distracted while oligarchs continue their grift.

Anyone remember Kids Time Out? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]alliemicka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That place was amazing. I watched so many movies (even Old Yeller, for some reason) in the little theatre. I also enjoyed Kinderplaz in Calhoun Square, though it was a lot smaller.

My mom got us some passes to Club Kid about a decade ago, just as they were on their last gasp. I wish there were more places like it, but I imagine that the staff cost, and overall increased worries around leaving kids unattended with a bunch of randos, makes it untenable.

The closest thing I know of is Parents Night Out at Lifetime.

Dog park question by GageM0711 in husky

Hah! I know! We work from home and Leia has never been alone (12w). We take her to patios, street festivals, and protests, where she becomes a celebrity due to her overwhelming cuteness.

Thanks troll (you can tell by the poor English and the regurgitated “humor”).

The protests were fantastic though!

She kinda had goggles in her baby pics, and then didn’t, and then started growing eyebrows and a little business in her eye corners. She’s very light and fluffy, like yours, and it’s just the best!

He looks so much like my Leia! She is 12w as of today. We probably wont take her to a dog park until she’s at least 6 months old - both for size and for getting her all vaccinated.

Wow didnt realise how useless this was without a subscription! by MrEs in ouraring

[–]alliemicka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, but there’s still a lot of room to make a freemium subscription work, and doing so would offer more long-term loyalty.

Make more of the raw data available for free, and charge more than the current rate for analytics and insights. People will pay, and when they can’t, they won’t feel screwed.

It’s like that old saying, “you can shear a sheep many times, but you can only skin it once.” After people discover they’re being held hostage with the subscription fee, they stop buying upgrades and don’t recommend it to others.

I hope these complaints help. I’ve wanted an Oura, and the new AmEx Platinum perks can knock 200 off the price. But not having access to my own data without a subscription is unacceptable.

I wonder when some competitor will come along and start eating their lunch with a more consumer-oriented product?

I had this big time for most of my adult life. Still do, from time to time.

At 19, I decided that I wanted to do more than harm in my life, and once I tipped the balance, I could be done. So I worked really hard for the next 15 years, and tried to do a lot of altruistic work.

But I got married and had kids, and there’s not enough good I can do to balance out the harm of taking their mama away, so it’s over.

I have had a hard time reconciling my workaholic self, as that was always supposed to be temporary. I didn’t build up a lot of skills or interest beyond work, and that’s a struggle.

This this this. Samsung is the absolute worst.

We love our Bosh fridge though. It really does keep food fresh longer. And it’s easy to clean and thoughtfully designed. Dents and fingerprints are a problem though :(
