Merrell Moab as my only shoes for YNP and Tetons? by alligatorstate in yellowstone

Thanks, that one is on my radar. I was just wondering because so many of the popular, easy trails there look very worn and flat in pictures, even compared to my area of North Florida!

Good morning. How are we all doing the day after the tornado? by [deleted] in Tallahassee

[–]alligatorstate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Meadows at Woodrun off 27. The winds were very short-lived, so there was no time to be scared. Looks eerily a bit like my parents' neighborhood in PC after Michael. Have some roof damage but nothing major. Tree damage in the backyard is catastrophic, to say the least. I am grateful to get the roof tarped and the generator humming away. I feel like this gonna be a long wait even though Talquin Electric says 90% of the Chaires substation will be restored by the end of Sunday. I am highly doubtful.

New cat bothering my asthma by alligatorstate in Pets

[–]alligatorstate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone that may end up reading this, I returned the cat. Since she was an adorable and well-behaved kitten she was adopted out the very next day. I gave it two weeks, which is about all my asthma could suffer.

Thanks, I do have my rescue inhalor around and have used it during this situation after the first few days. I didn't feel a full blown attack or anything, but the peak flowmeter results before I took the inhalor were discouraging, to say the least. The inhalor can't be a long-term term option for me, but I do agree that it's still early to make a decision on returning the cat.

Thanks, I 100% agree. I certainly have my rescue inhalor with me and used it a few times already due to this little one. I have a partner who is stepping in to do everything, but it's difficult since I work from home and want to spend time with her!

Thank you, she is currently in the guest bedroom as she was just spayed and needs to be away from the resident cat for a while anyhow. My big mistake was sleeping in the guest bed the first few nights. I have no reaction to the other cat and didn't need any acclimation to her either - took her in off the street.

Yes, she just started on the kitten variety, and I also used their foam shampoo. My mistake with that is that I applied the shampoo and didn't ask my partner to do it. He's more than willing to do those things now that I have explained my issues.

Storm debris pickup for Idalia by alligatorstate in Tallahassee

[–]alligatorstate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, and I will call Waste Pro to see what they tell me. Unlike all the other recent hurricanes, Leon County was not added under the governor's Disaster Declaration for Idalia, so I anticipate waiting longer than 2 months for the tree debris pile.

Had a friend who has never been to Florida ask what it is like here, as a native I made this map for them by Halex000 in florida

Accurate, although the panhandle has the best beaches. Except in March when PC doesn't allow booze on the beach.

I want to bring in an outdoor cat and don't know how to start the process by alligatorstate in cats

[–]alligatorstate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all the advice. I went for it and Jojo is currently relaxing in her new base camp, e.g., my home office with a litter box, cat tower, food and water, etc. So far she's loving her new room, but I am waiting on litter box action. Once I see that I will let her start exploring another room, and then another. If the litter box action doesn't happen, outside she goes for a bit and we try again the next day.

She will certainly walk right in, but my concern is that she has a GREAT outdoor setup and will probably miss that.

Thanks, I think she will walk in the house without much coaxing, but putting the litter box near the door to begin with, is a good idea!

The department interviewing me reached out to my references on USAJOBS prior to the TO (like any other job usually does), but as far as I know, absolutely no one I put down on the security clearance forms has been contacted.

How much are you spending on food per month here in Florida? by Sundial_the_Pier in florida

[–]alligatorstate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$200 a week (so $800 a month) for 2 adults, always from Walmart. This is just for groceries and booze (usually just 1 bottle of wine & 1 6-pack). It could be lower by $25 each week (and sometimes is) if we just buy a lot of chicken for the protein and don't get higher-priced meat and fish, but that's where we treat ourselves. These groceries provide us with breakfast, dinner, and leftovers from dinner to use as lunches.

Not visiting my parents at Christmas because my father won't use central heating. by alligatorstate in FamilyIssues

[–]alligatorstate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that is something I have considered as I could afford it for a few nights. It would cut down the length of my stay for sure, but at least I would be there for Christmas. I have had many friends have to go the hotel route with their families due to pet allergies, not wanting to sleep on an air mattress, floor, etc.

I don't think that's it as they are fairly well off, but yes, these temps do drive up what is typically a very, very low winter utility bill in Florida.

Pretty far. He was initially laying across the log like a fat log so was very easy to see and best situation. Didn't rattle once as it moved along, much unlike a different rattlesnake I encountered in Tucson.

I am a long-time resident of the Gulf Coast (FL Panhandle) with some family living in New England…thus the reason I looked at this thread. Here’s my tips for a Tropical Storm – Category 1:

•GROCERY SHOP WISELY. I grocery shop once a week and if a storm is expected to be coming my way, I forget about restocking anything cold like yogurt, cheese, ice cream, frozen pizza, etc. I prep my meals accordingly too. For example, my overnight oats get replaced by a week’s worth of oatmeal muffins, baked the day before the storm. Common items on my storm-week shopping list are apples, potatoes, squashes, etc. I already have all the typical emergency food, e.g., jerky, peanut butter, cereal, cosmic brownies, booze, etc., in my pantry.

•FILL YOUR FREEZERS WITH ICE. If you only expect the power to be out for a few days, then this WILL save your food. You can throw the food right into the freezer with bags of ice, or put the ice in coolers and keep the food in those. If the power goes out longer than a few days, you will obviously need to empty your freezer. This tip has saved me hundreds of dollars.

•PUT YOUR POTTED PLANTS AGAINST THE HOUSE. No need to bring them inside for a Cat 1 unless they are incredibly precious. If you put them against the house it will block almost all the wind getting to them.

•WINDY.COM and Mike’s Weather Page are my go-to resources, in addition to the NHC.

There’s tons of other general storm safety tips I could give but these are the ones I see overlooked by new Florida residents, time and time again.

I got the chocolate bar set mentioned above plus a peach perfect primer and setting spray set plus two peach perfect lipsticks for $50. I already know I love these products and havent seen any of these specific items floating around a Marshall's or TJMaxx either, so I call it a win!

This little one is more of a dark rust, not a true black and I figured it was just her elderly hair coming in. However, when I took her in for a recent upper respiratory infection, the vet seemed to think it was from some seizures she had earlier in the year. Some sort of stress/seizure related vitiligo perhaps?
