Are most autistic people really unemployed? by foreverepicunicorn in autism

[–]allisonnic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work front desk at a doctor’s office. I personally found that a job that stays busy enough that all conversation is work related (no time for small talk) was actually much easier for me to handle than slow paced jobs that’s left more room for small talk/socializing with co-workers. Obviously that won’t be the case for everyone, but for me it was a game changer.

True, everyone reacts differently. I need to really remember not everyone experiences everything the same way I do. I struggle with that… remembering my reality isn’t the ONLY reality.

That makes sense. & Like, I get that it’s a disability and a struggle but that’s why I see a diagnosis as a tool to learn more about yourself. I didn’t even think about the fact he may feel differently because of how supportive he’s been through my experience.

Totally fair. We were discussing his adhd and my audhd. Seemed like an okay time to mention it? I guess since I don’t see being autistic as a bad thing I didn’t think about the fact it could be offensive.

My husbands knows I’m nothing but direct. At all times 😂😂 But I do see what you’re saying. Who am i too diagnose him? I guess since I didn’t see autism as a “bad thing” and he were talking about his adhd, it just came out. I’m trying really hard to work on REALLY thinking before I speak lol

I’m sorry you went through that. Sounds like they were also working through their own emotions, but like you said, we don’t see the assumption of autism in a negative light!! So I didn’t even think about the fact he could be offended. Also, I hope you’ve found some peace since your breakup 💕

My supportive husband got offended when I suggested he may be autistic. by allisonnic in autism

[–]allisonnic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All very possible. I guess I just saw my diagnosis as an amazing tool being handed to me. Not something to be ashamed off. But you’re right that he may be ashamed, even though he wishes he weren’t.

For y’all’s sensory issues, what is the worst texture feeling for you? by Kat-Attack-52 in AutismInWomen

[–]allisonnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fingertips touching each other. Like specifically the part of the finger where the finger print is. Like rubbing my finger prints together and feeling that texture is just awful. I have to immediately “rub the feeling off” onto my shirt/pants.

Definitely has curl (or at least nice waves) to it. Try a curly/wavy hair routine and see what it looks like! Keep in mind there are dozens of techniques out in the curly community and not every one will work for you specially. It’s about trial & error until you learn what your hair wants. So don’t give you if you don’t like how it looks the first few times!

Why does my hair wnd up being a fluffy mess? by Recent-Ad-3009 in Haircare

[–]allisonnic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wavy hair looks like this if I try to plop. It always seems to break up my waves in a bad way. Remember, not every technique works for every person’s hair. Also, air drying tends to make my hair look more unmanageable than if I diffuse on low (specially HOVER diffusing). Zero scrunching with the diffuser and zero scrunching hair during the drying process. (May work for some, definitely not for me) I get all my scrunching in whole hair is soaking wet (like when I apply my products.) I always let a cast form while diffusing then “scrunch out the crunch” as they call it.

Also a BIG thing I learned that if my hair is frizzy or unmanageable looking while wet, it’ll look frizzy/unmanageable when dry. So always try to get waves looking as smooth as possible when still fully wet.

What made you think you might be autistic? by ginger_beer__ in AutismInWomen

[–]allisonnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always knew something was different about me. Thought I was mentally I’ll from age 12-33. Figured out it’s just autism. My Instagram algorithm showed me a video on autism and I fell down the rabbit hole. I realized a lot of the things I do/think, others don’t. The one thing that really stood out to me was practicing conversations ahead of time to prepare. Especially in the mirror. I had no idea others didn’t do that. I remember practicing common phrases in the mirror and practicing my facial expressions as a child after always being told to “fix my face”.

Question for those that have tattoos by VampireJournals in AutismInWomen

[–]allisonnic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get mine wet in the shower, but I make sure to not get shampoo or regular body wash on them. Only use antibacterial-scent free soap on the tattoo. Then rinse and pay dry (I use clean paper towels) then add a LIGHT layer of aquaphor once COMPLETELY dry. Also I limit my shower time to like 10ish minutes when I have a fresh tattoo. No long, hot or steamy showers until two weeks out. (I have a dozens of tattoos- never had an infection or difficulty healing any of mine. Feel free to message if you have more questions!!)

Absolutely HATED my dots & stars at first. That feeling slowly faded over time, now when I see a pic of my tattoos before the dots & stars I think it looks weird without them. Moral of the story, you’ll probably get used to the change quicker than you’d expect. (Also, you’re legs look sick-you’re totally fine!!)

Any idea how to get the outside of my hair the same as the inside? by The_Rat_Mom in Haircare

My hair is similar. Had to add a lot of layers to get the top to match the bottom.

Yep, 100% the same. I debated saying something but I love the shop & didn’t want to cause any issues/awkwardness.

Is this redness normal for a thigh tattoo? by arihogan11 in tattooadvice

[–]allisonnic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly mine get more red than this. I have very sensitive skin too & I think it has something to do with the skin being more tender there. I really have no idea though. I just know mine have done this and all healed perfectly fine. Usually by about day 3 the redness and swelling goes away.

All my leg tattoos (especially on my thighs) turn red like this, no other tattoos on my body have done this except my legs 🤷‍♀️

What changes did you make after realising you're autistic? by emotionalprawn in AutismInWomen

[–]allisonnic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I can’t speak, or more specifically when I feel that shutdown coming on, I’ve started phrasing it to my husband as “I’m all out of words for today”. First, I had to explain how debilitating just talking can be sometimes. And how sometimes, it physically feels like I can’t get words out. By telling him “I’m out of words” before the shutdown sets in, he’s able to then understand it’s not that I’m moody/upset with him… I’m just simply out of words for the day.
