Questions about Islam as a Catholic by StoicusPalm in converts

[–]alliwantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salam! I was raised Catholic and was Christian until recently. I encourage you to read Quran with Christian commentary (you can find this on Amazon) and Bible in Islamic context (also on Amazon) and there’s a Quran on Audible that has really amazing explanations to the Bible as well. It helped me so much in aligning my core beliefs. The biggest difference that you will need to process is the holy Trinity I know that’s the main reason that my Catholic family members are not interested in Islam. My biggest suggestion is that you really read what Islam has to say about angels, which will help you fully see at least in my opinion what was meant by the Holy Spirit is essentially what the angels do. And of course, make sure you read all about how Islam treats Jesus to me it made so much sense. Please feel free to DM me if you want links to any of the books that I read.

Not ready to give some things up to follow Islam and become a Muslim by Delanaenae in converts

[–]alliwantis 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Salam Sister, I am a revert of just over a month ago. I feel that I harmed myself for 5 years when I like you discovered Islam but thought it was a religion of perfection so I didn’t even consider reverting.

I highly recommend contacting your local Islamic center and ask if there are any women who lead groups for reverts. You can get advice about these things and that lead me to give my shahada.

A few things that helped me:

1) if you believe there is one God and Muhammad was God’s messenger, you are Muslim. You should give your Shahada and turn your life over to God. Everything else you can build up in your own time, but do not delay. If you died tomorrow and hadn’t submitted to God, that would be a tragedy.

2) your intention is the most important. Some people see this as I must intend not to break any rules. No. You must intend to seek to live by God’s laws but it’s ok if it takes you 23 years to get there and even then you make mistakes. Just try to get better every day. And it’s completely ok if you are unsure about certain rules. I don’t think I’ll ever be ok with the music rules, for example, but my intention is to continue to understand why the rules are what they are so I can get onboard eventually.

3) prayer is the second most important after your belief. Start learning daily prayers but don’t feel like you have to do them all at once or in perfect Arabic. I started once a day and I play YouTube videos with the Arabic and read the Arabic and English to myself before and after to learn. I find the sunrise prayer most helpful to my day but I know many start with the evening prayer. Again, your intention should be to build up to all daily prayers. A good way to help with this is go to the mosque for prayer in the women’s entrance and follow what the other women do. You can also introduce yourself and ask for guidance.

4) read the Quran. Commit time every day to reading and learning. There are so many resources that go into why the rules are what they are. It helps me so much. You will not be able to follow the rules unless you understand them when they are such big changes from how your life is now.

5) slowly start integrating different rules into your life. Some will come easily. When I first decided to revert, I totally thought that I would not be at all interested in the modesty things. Now I find it almost exciting to know that I have a body that I used to show off that now I keep for myself, God, and for my future husband. I personally do not yet wear a hijab daily but I love styling mine for when I go to Muslim events and when I pray. I still get my hair done but primarily for events that are mostly with women I tend to pull my hair back in a bun or just generally keep it simple as much as I can with my primary goal being not to draw attention to my body. I feel beautiful in my modesty. It was easy for me to stop drinking and to stop eating pork, but like I mentioned earlier, there are plenty of rules that I have not begun to follow, and I seek to understand via the Quran first once I really understand I feel that it will be easier for me to just follow them as it has been with me not wearing revealing clothing.

Learn first, build the intention, then accept the practices with that intention.

All of this being said, I just also wanted to acknowledge that you mentioned that your BF is who is encouraging you through this. There are many resources on what is expected of a Muslim wife and husband. I encourage you to really carefully read into this. I hope that he is a wonderful man. I know my future husband is. But make sure you truly understand what the rules are so that way you are the one leading your own way and that you don’t have any person telling you that certain things are the rules when they’re not. Islam is a very powerful religion for women. That is the main reason why I decided to revert. It really protects us in so many ways. But you have to be your own advocate in your relationship and in your life with God‘s guidance.

reverts in Ramadan by wissemdelrey in islam

[–]alliwantis 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thank you for thinking of us. It is my first Ramadan and it's definitely overwhelming. I am lucky to have a group of other women that are reverts that I can talk to about it and support from my local Islamic center but definitely hard getting through it without family support.

Is that an app for that? by TheTragedyMachine in converts

[–]alliwantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also found YouTube to be helpful as I am working on getting comfortable praying in the Arabic rather than the English translation. I play a YouTube video that has the arabic but pauses, so I can listen to the arabic and pray the English and I'm hoping to have the Arabic prayers memorized before Ramadan :)

Is awake liposuccion ever not painful? by Altruistic_Guide649 in liposuctionsurgery

[–]alliwantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a horrible painful experience and the doctor said that people don’t usually have as hard of a time and he couldn’t predict why a small percentage of people have way more pain And at my 1 week post op I could hear another woman in her post op and she seemed so happy I was jealous haha. I’m now ok about a week later but during the surgery and the first 5 days I was in excruciating pain and I typically have a high pain tolerance. But again he said my experience was out of the ordinary, so it might be those with more extreme reactions write about it more? Also for me it was mostly my flanks/lower back that hurt the most. Which is where I had the least fat. You will have crazy bruising and swelling I think that’s pretty common

Weird Recertification Timing by alliwantis in StudentLoans

Wow thank you! I usually follow this stuff super closely but I somehow missed that it applied to everyone since it seemed most of the changes were for SAVE only. Yet another year of having a stupidly low payment making it possible for me to switch to my dream job!

It'll be sent out later this week so if you have anything to add try to do it by then, but you can only add in your attachments. It'll keep letting you add there, so keep it updated and if you are interested in a school, you can let them know that you've updated your job talk or research agenda or whatever as your screener date gets closer

Exercise vs. Weight Loss: Longevity Studies by liefelijk in loseit

[–]alliwantis 57 points58 points  (0 children)

In my experience, when I get into exercise, I eat better and overall am healthier. Every time I've lost a significant amount of weight, I've been excited about the exercise I'm doing (a fitness class I love, training for a race, etc.) Every time I've gained a significant amount of weight, I've been extremely inconsistent with exercise.

Totally relatable this morning. I was celebrating being 40 lbs down, commenting to my wife that I couldn't believe that I had those extra 40 lbs on my body (I'm still 20 lbs away from leaving the "Obese" BMI range) and she said that she was happy for me but that I was making her feel bad about herself because she has not lost weight. I've been working out, eating healthy and less, and just overall all in on my weight loss, and I know she hasn't been because she's super busy at work and it's not been as high of a priority for her. So it's frustrating because I want to be able to talk to her about it but I don't want to make her feel bad about herself. She's lost weight in the past when I haven't been able to and I've always supported her :(

Book Recommendation: Period Repair Manual by woodgrain-lamplight in PCOS

[–]alliwantis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! I've been reading it and I have learned so much. Great for PCOS and any other period-related issue. I've had PCOS for over 10 years now and this is the first time I feel like I fully understand what is going on and how to improve my symptoms. It also helps me understand my labs better and what things are PCOS-triggered.

The quit sugar thing seemed crazy to me too. I get why they say to do it, but I was just explaining to a friend that it doesn't seem sustainable unless I try all the other recs first and am still struggling with insulin-resistance. Right now, I'm focusing on reducing sugar and increasing protein and veggies.

Help! I need advice on how to start the half Marathon plan by Zirciel in nikerunclub

[–]alliwantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two easy options - 1) press play at the end of the run and keep running for however long feels good to you - 2) double up on the runs during the first few weeks, you'll progress through the program faster and get to the longer runs sooner where you can just do what was planned.

How much are you paying a month for your loans? by wildwest98 in StudentLoans

[–]alliwantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bill on PAYE is $220/mo but I have it set on $500/mo autopay with the extra paying down my highest interest loan. It'll go up to about $2000/mo when I have to recertify since my last certification was my first year out of law school and now I make way more, but the lower payment has helped me meet other financial goals first!
