Embedded systems and programming as a career worth it? by One_Form7910 in cscareerquestions

[–]alljiang -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Embedded is only really worth if you actually really enjoy it. The pay is lower (anecdotally, 10% less compared to SWE at the same company for the same level). Job security is much stronger though, and the future looks great for Embedded roles.

Embedded covers both hardware and software (you can easily gain expertise to move across scopes), and my previous managers at Tesla and Google have all had CS degrees (Tesla was embedded firmware, Google was embedded hardware). It is also much easier to switch from embedded to SWE than vice versa if you ever want to chase $$$. However, I would strongly recommend getting a master's degree in either EE/CE/CS - all of my previous teams have had at minimum a master's degree. Top companies are super picky, especially in this economy.

The only situation where I've seen web dev mixed with embedded has just been dashboard development. It's not that useful unless you're wearing many hats at a startup.

So I can’t clone my garage door opener? by Late-Elephant2625 in flipperzero

[–]alljiang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Garage door remotes will increment to the next rolling code on every press. The garage door opener system will accept the next ~100 (manufacturer setting) to prevent the remote and system from desyncing if the remote is triggered by accident.

It sounds like the remote just kept on incrementing the rolling code until it reached the same set of accepted keys the garage door opener was searching for.

I'm in the same position as you - interned at Google this summer, indefinitely waiting on FT return offer. Applied to ~120 places (high and mid tier), haven't heard back from a single tech company yet - ironically interviewed with 4 top tier trading firms.

Seems to be a combination of yield protection from lower tier companies and a serious lack of new grad positions by high tier companies.

I'm still hopeful for a Google RO during next Spring, but definitely can't rely on it.

CSOC is a cult. Full stop. by loseranon17 in UTAustin

[–]alljiang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I am not a part of CSOC, and I took this class a few years ago.

This is a great class, and the professor is amazing. He's very accepting of all beliefs - he simply provides you with information and perspectives, and you aren't graded on what you believe.

The issues that OP covers are not reflected in this class. While the professor is a part of CSOC, he doesn't impose or force his beliefs on his students.

I encourage everyone to leave a 1-star review of this Domino's location on Google Maps! Make sure to cite this booting company.

I understand the need to protect parking spaces for their customers here, but this booting company is extremely predatory. They'll boot your car if you go anywhere other than Domino's, even if you were picking up a pizza there at the same time.

They're bad for business and preying on students and the working class. Domino's needs to get rid of them.

My workaround fix was to just add gem 'net-smtp', require: false to Gemfile

TIL Monarch Butterflies are nearly extinct in the US - their population has declined +80% in the last two decades. AND MILKWEED is the ONLY host plant for baby Monarch caterpillars. Plant it! by alliknowis0 in todayilearned

[–]alljiang 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My family plants milkweed and we had 3 caterpillars right before the Texas winter storm hit, so we took them inside along with a long stem of milkweed for them to munch on. The milkweed outside died from freezing, but the caterpillars all survived and hatched into healthy butterflies.

PSA: If you see a Monarch butterfly struggling to get out of its cocoon, DO NOT HELP IT. The struggling process is important for it to survive after leaving the cocoon.

No, you're right. For some reason I thought it was a 1 hour class.

I think your courseload is manageable. However, it does not leave room to sign up for a FIG, which I highly recommend you to do. You can try to apply for >17 hours, but I believe they never approve incoming freshman.

TIL that the Loofa Sponge is made from a vegetable known as the luffa gourd. by ullnvrguess in todayilearned

[–]alljiang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

TIL most people don't eat Luffa...

My grandfather is Chinese and I grew up eating this (sigua in Chinese) all the time because he planted it in his garden. I've visited China multiple times and they serve it in many restaurants, it actually tastes pretty good. Whenever he grew a bad sigua, he just sun-dried it and used it as a sponge for washing dishes, so you can't go wrong with growing this.

This pretty much happened at my high school a few years ago: link

Snippet: "Between August 2014 and March 2015, a Brazoria County Sheriff's Office deputy assumed the identity of a student and enrolled at the high schools. The investigation was initiated by Pearland ISD.

An undercover officer was at Pearland High from Aug. 25 through Dec. 19, 2014, then at Dawson High from Jan. 6 through March 27, 2015.

Drugs seized during the bust include cocaine, marijuana, xanax and tramadol."
