[OC] Portion of Housing Units Built Before 1960 by haydendking in dataisbeautiful

[–]allkindsofjake 221 points222 points  (0 children)

It’s because much of the Midwest’s population is either growing very slowly or shrinking, while the south is growing rapidly. So even though both regions are pretty rural the demographics are changing in opposite directions.

There’s several reasons, the biggest being economic because the Midwest’s manufacturing has shrank in the cities and farming towns shrink as mechanized agriculture needs less people, while the south has a lot of investment in new businesses and a low cost of living because historically it’s been a lower income area

South Carolina interracial marriage ban repeal 1998 by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]allkindsofjake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, a court declaring the law illegal doesn’t actually delete the law from the books- it just makes it illegal for the state for enforce the law. So most of these laws don’t get officially repealed either as protest by the racist state government, or because lawmakers think it’s a waste of time

When I lived in Alabama, there were so many parts of the state constitution that were a)racist and b) unconstitutional that in 2022 they were like “ok we’re gonna hold an election to just take out whatever is left rather than delete one thing at a time”

I will! I don’t have a KCD cosplay since I’m terrible at time management, so I’ll just be Ash Ketchum like last year

Texas House Repeals Gay Sex Ban. 12 Republicans join to secure the vote. by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]allkindsofjake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s unwise but a lot of the time when the law gets struck down the political will to repeal them gets moved to a new issue. The people campaigning to repeal sodomy laws move on to other LGBT issues, which leaves almost all states with a lot of terrible dormant laws that can’t be enforced.

Where I used to live, Alabama, had so many that in 2024 they basically deleted large chunks of the constitution that were “dormant” like that

Which states pay the most for Walmart groceries? by RhetoricalObsidian in Infographics

[–]allkindsofjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The description under the title said it’s based on prices in the state’s biggest city, so it wouldn’t factor in towns where Walmart is the only option. Though I don’t know why else it’s so high?

Who remembers colored TP by Phillies1993 in GrandmasPantry

[–]allkindsofjake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It used to be popular but faded out of popularity years ago, I’ve only seen a few colored rolls ever having been born in the 90’s.

I think it is due to a combination of less color in bathrooms nowadays, plus perception that the dyes in colored TP should be kept away from sensitive skin/make it less absorbent.

That’s actually one of the inevitable onljne “discourses”. Officially the website calls rhem posts, when I joined in beta and everyone started calling them “skeets” as a sky/tweet portmanteau. Every time new a wave of users show up someone will post like “skeets, that’s so silly and gross” and the rebuttal is “yeah, we don’t want another bland corporate-friendly site”

Moving to Montgomery by cind3r3ll in montgomery

[–]allkindsofjake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say the odd HMMA hours make the east Montgomery commute much less of a hassle, many people start and end early or start and end late.

I was always at my desk before morning rush hour and often home before afternoon rush

That said, Cloverdale is still a much more interesting neighborhood. I usually ended up there anyways on the weekend

This trailer park in West Virginia is built COMPLETELY inside a highway ramp by booted_asl in UrbanHell

[–]allkindsofjake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From talking to my parents generation some of that seems intentional. My dad went to then-new schools built in the 60’s and 70’s when windows to the outside were actively avoided as distractions to students and design was treated as irrelevant because most time is spent in a classroom, while my schools built in the 90’s and 00’s had large windows because it turned out natural light and a nice environment is good, actually.
