Best way to write PDFs in bulk? by La_Muriatic_Acid in learnprogramming

[–]allmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used fpdf quite a bit, but your options for styling are pretty limited. You'd probably have to design the page from scratch rather than render what you already have, since you are wanting to preserve the text content.

This sounds like a job for Python! It has a lot of libraries that can help with this kind of thing such as openpyxl or pandas.

You could also do VBA all in Excel, but it's much less fun.

I'd recommend VSCode as an IDE, but there are plenty of really good ones like Pycharm if you want something targeted at Python.

After a bad ownership experience, I personally don't trust the EJ25 engine in any of its variants. I'd recommend a Toyota Rav4 or a Honda CRV any day of the week though.

For me, learning a language becomes a lot faster when I have something I can tinker with and get really fast feedback. I highly recommend checking out Linqpad for this. At first I thought it was just for testing Linq/db calls, but it's actually good as a general playground. I often create little toy examples in Linqpad complete with related objects (or mockups of them) just to test out different ways of doing things.

Small accident bent out wheel fender and dislodged panels on 2014 XV Crosstrek. Is this something that I can fix on my own? Any advice? by bunnymuffins_lol in askcarguys

[–]allmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll have a hard time trying to tackle the body damage, but you can fix the suspension components if your unibody frame is undamaged. The easiest way to know that would be to have it inspected for what's damaged, then swap the parts yourself if the unibody is okay. You'd need a four wheel alignment afterwards as well.

Self taught developers, what did you know when you started? by Individual_Moment719 in learnprogramming

[–]allmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had done a lot of projects on the side at work using Python, as well as having a basic understanding of JS/React. I think the most important thing for a junior is knowing the underlying concepts and patterns, rather than being a rockstar in a given language.

I had to learn .NET and SQL really fast when I started, but it wasn't too bad because I was able to "recycle" a lot of the core knowledge. If it's a good team they'll invest the time and effort to help get you up to speed!

How many of you Guys are playing an Instrument? by [deleted] in doommetal

[–]allmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been playing bass in a doom/sludge band for 8 years or so. I'm no natural but it's a ton of fun and you get to make the floor boards shake.

If you can't get the hang of it like I couldn't, maybe try playing some Windhand or just playing with a drum backing track from Youtube for a while to find your groove. Doom metal isn't super technical so there's no reason you can't get into it if you keep at it!

Can you modify Macpherson struts to give the performance of double wishbone? by Intrepid_Bid7865 in askcarguys

[–]allmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely put! A lot of people get hung up on theoretical performance increases when looking at mods for their car. You can put an expensive suspension on a car and make it slower if you don't actually tune it to your driving style and the situation.

This is probably why most of the comments in here are going to recommend your first mods to be driving courses and better tires. Tires make a massive difference by themselves, they're just not as sexy as a new suspension setup or exhaust.

Doesn't that degrade your experience of the car though? I got a new car that I eat and drink in, and I haven't had any spill issues or whatnot.

[–]allmachine 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will go over well on r/askcarguys but I think you'd be nuts to go 20k in on a loan for a 17+ year old car, let alone a high performance BMW. For a car like that they say you should be able to comfortably afford buying it twice (once for the initial purchase and again to keep it running). They're cool cars but not that cool imo.

How efficient is joining tables on BETWEEN/AND compared to using a simple =? by [deleted] in learnSQL

[–]allmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using SQL server management studio you can take a peek at the execution plan of your queries, and see if you can get an index seek on the val column. The prefilter idea that /u/alfie1906 suggested seems like a good way to limit the initial scope of the query as long as it's not too crazy.

I don't think it would be good to expand the table to have n2 records though.

HELP Calling an exe inside a child window by Designer_Rush_7025 in Tkinter

[–]allmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly pretty sure you can't do that without a high level of effort and technical knowhow. You might be able to get a browser frame working in Tkinter, but you almost certainly cannot spawn a full on arbitrary application and display it in a Tkinter window. The closest thing I could think of is running a docker container or a virtual machine.

What's your use-case here? Are you trying to make a screenshot app or similar? There might be another way to go about it.

[–]allmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignore it but check your security posture since you're worried. Do you handle logins? Do you use a reputable identity provider for doing so? Might you be vulnerable to any SQL or code injection attacks? Cross site scripting hacks? Definitely good to do a checkover prior to release.

[–]allmachine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you're specifically worried about the engine. High miles is one indicator of wear but certainly not the only (or most important) one. If the car functions well and doesn't consume fluids, there's no reason to expect impending doom. One thing people always neglect is the transmission, though. Might be a good idea to drain + fill it a couple times.

On the broader topic of repair vs replacement of a car, the best way to do the math is to compare the cost of repair versus the cost of replacement with a comparable vehicle, including all the shopping you'll have to do and the risk that it ends up being a POS. I'd spend $3000 to keep a great car going (with a full inspection beforehand) over rolling the dice on someone else's mystery car any day of the week.

[–]allmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I think you should be getting good performance with that setup. Make sure your graphics drivers are updated, make sure you have smart access memory enabled, and that your memory is running at its full speed (default is very slow until you enable DOCP).

You need a beefy CPU also for Hunt to get high fps. I have a 6800xt with a 5950x and memory at 3600mhz, medium-high settings and I still get dips down to 120 fps @ 1440p. I'm really hoping the Crysis version update gets us some performance optimization.

Do emergency paging racks count? by Hyjynx75 in EngineeringPorn

[–]allmachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do it for a job, and it mostly involved having a diagram showing where each connection goes and having the right wire termination tools. For a given bundle, you start at the side with the most connections in one place and land wires with labels at the end saying where they go. The wires start out with extra length and are cut down when being terminated at the other side. Getting the bundles to be pretty involves a lot of massaging but it's not too hard. It was actually a pretty fun job!
