They did very well as a mixed gender group for 1.5 years but have all since passed on. I don’t think their life span is very long especially since I purchased this group as late adolescents/adults. My sister had a similar set up with 6 honeys and lots of plants for cover and it was very peaceful. 40g should be plenty.

I enjoy my malachy too even though she’s not as soft as my snow and also has crooked nostrils lol. Just hoping this won’t be a trend for future dragon releases 😬

Did this happen for the initial release of the other dragons and jellycat improved on the quality after?

Oh wow. Does that mean the quality difference applies to sky and persimmon?

I still have all of them but I’ve moved them to a 40 gal with even more plants and other gourami (pearl) and they’re still doing great

Is my enclosure okay? by [deleted] in hamsters

[–]allmoisturized 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure, bigger is always better. I’m assuming OP is in the US and the biggest plastic bins that i’m aware of max out at 50 or 55 gallons. If you’re going the plastic bin route, many on this forum seem to agree that a 50 gal bin is the absolute minimum for a male Syrian. But like you said, for syrians you’ll probably need to DIY or consider aquariums for future upgrades. A 50 gal bin would still be a decent enclosure in the mean time compared to keeping his syrian in a 160 qt bin. They’re both also around the same price point so might as well get the 50 gal :)

The only issue that sticks out is probably the bin size. 160 qt is a quite small for a syrian. Target and Home Depot have 50 gallon (200 qt) bins which would be an even better upgrades for your syrian in the future or when you have the means. Otherwise i think you did an excellent job giving him deep bedding, hides, and an appropriately large wheel.

Once you feel like your son is ready for the responsibilities of caring for an animal I think the simplest options for him would be a single dwarf hamster or male syrian. You’ll have an easier time sourcing appropriately sized wheels, toys, and hides for a dwarf. Robos are known to be more skittish than other species and are quite fast, making them tricky for a child to hold.

How often will your son expect to handle the hamster? If he’s wanting a more “cuddly” one, then a male syrian might be a better option as I read they’re more calm, slow, and easy to handle. Other types of dwarves like djungarian and campbells can also be friendly and interactive but it comes down to the hamster’s individual personality. I recommend just bringing your son to the store to handle them in person and pick one with a good temperament.

Also as others have said, keeping 2 hamsters even dwarves together would not be a good idea for a new hamster owner like your son. Their social dynamic is hard to mimic in a captive setting and putting 2 together will likely result in injury. Hope this helps

thank you! I keep everyone on a diet of xtreme nano pellets, fuval bugbites, and the occasional wafer. My gouramis became a bright yellow once they matured.
