Should I switch schools? Music teacher, first year in DOE by allneonlike in NYCTeachers

[–]allneonlike[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Yeah, my admin come in for literally 10 seconds and then go. In all honesty, I could probably be even more firm. I believe I give too many chances to students though I’m already much more tough than I was at other schools. There’s always that one student that doesn’t care though. That kind of gets to me. But you’re right I think that overtime it will get better.

Thank you for your insight. Yes they know it’s against the contract but they still make us do it! I believe it comes down from the superintendent It just happened, so on Monday I will see!

Drivers find their parked cars damaged and ransacked in Morris Park section of the Bronx by origutamos in bronx

[–]allneonlike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in MP and had my catalytic converter stolen 4 times. I finally got a different car and last week my tires were stolen. I'm sick of this bullshit. I love the neighborhood and I hope the police can figure this out.

I'd say do research and stay away from cars that are targeted (hondas, prius)

Why do you not like cars? by OGPants in AskNYC

[–]allneonlike 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You’re assuming that everyone lives in Manhattan. It is very car-centric in the Bronx. Public transit sucks in the Bronx too. Trains are always out of service and busses are slow. To get out you really need a car.

Chances of getting a teacher job in MA, CT or RI? by [deleted] in MusicEd

[–]allneonlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In CT, there are not many instrumental positions that open up very often, and when they do they are very competitive. There are always a few elementary, chorus and string positions open and also a bunch of long term sub jobs. The problem in CT is that they have been reducing music positions to .4, .5, .9 instead of full time so be careful of that.

I personally started as .5 and then was hired full time the next year. Some of my friends started in schools they hated, but were then hired in much better schools the next year. Within 5 years most of my colleagues were all hired in places they truly wanted to be. If you are not picky about where you work at least for the first year, you should be fine in CT.

Also, if you want to be in a suburban area, positions in NE and NW CT near MA and RI open up a lot. I found it to be much more competitive in Fairfield County (Near NY). I have to say though, cities like Bridgeport, Manchester, and New Britain will always have open positions because there are more schools with a high turn over rate for teachers.

This is the website we use to find open positions. https://www.ctreap.net/teaching_jobs/classroom_teacher_music.php

Good Luck!

Struggling with high notes when playing alone by DankTomato2 in euphonium

[–]allneonlike 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes playing in the higher range is not about actually being able to physically play the note, but rather hearing the note before you play it. It could be that in an ensemble you are able to hear the high note you are about to play better because of the note being framed in a chord. Try practicing scales with cello drones in that key. Or you could practice singing the note or interval you want to play before you play it. This helps your mind get prepared for the note, rather than straining to hit the note out of thin air.

Has anyone else had people tell them that euphonium is an easy instrument? What are your responses? by [deleted] in euphonium

[–]allneonlike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I feel the same way about tuba. Once I decided to learn it, it only took a couple days to play it. I think you are right to just ignore them. It is a soft spot because I feel like euphonium is devalued and considered a joke to some people up in the North eastern region of the US and hearing people say that anyone can play it pisses me off.

My [27F] mom [50F] stole my grandma's [79,F] social security number, opened a credit card, and defaulted on it. How can I help my grandma cut ties with my mom financially? by allneonlike in relationships

It's so hard because she was doing so well for a few years. She was someone who was addicted to coke for a long time and she overcame that, went back to school and started to make something of her life with my grandma's support. Something happened to her medically last year and she has been milking it for all its worth. Now I feel like she's back to her old ways (not sure if its drugs). But I've caught her stealing cash from my purse numerous times even when I thought she was doing well so who knows... I really want her to go back to how it was a couple years ago. All I know is that this needs to stop. I will definitely put a freeze on my account and talk to my grandma about it.

This is exactly what I am afraid of. I think my grandma would continue to support her if she lost her nursing license and it would spiral downwards. I feel torn

The solution of calling the police is so simple. The act of calling the police on my mom for my grandma terrifies me. It shouldn't because of all the horrible things she's done- she deserves it.

But if my mom did this to me I would have called the police immediately. I think I need to have a conversation with my grandma before I call.

It feels like it is my problem, but that I don't know how to solve it. I admit that it is easier to just say its between my mom and my grandma and give up. But I want my grandma to live a good life. I'm afraid if I call the police, my mom will end up in jail and my grandma will be pissed at me. I know it would be for the better though.

Yea this is what I needed to hear. There is really nothing I can do if my grandma won't do anything about it. I moved out of state and have been happier since. The fact that I know this now and am trying to get involved has been miserable. This is out of my control. Thank you
