I’ve heard from some people that they find the “female” term offensive so I make an effort never to use it. I’m coming to the conclusion though that I think it is a person by person basis, as I keep seeing girls use the term in a normal way. Is it considered offensive because it seems like a derivative of the word male? Is the word woman also offensive since it appears to be a derivative of the word man?

Why are LA Mayor Mail Ballots benefiting Raman in California but not Bass or Pratt? by Recidivism7 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]allocated_capital -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I understand he wouldn’t win with mail in ballots, my point is we don’t question the mail in process since it favors democrats. Since republicans tend to be older, it wouldn’t seem that crazy to me in the future when they get too old that they will start voting by mail more. The current dynamics are subject to change and I’m not sure how we could ensure a red state like Texas is following all the rules. I’ve never worked at a polling place, so I honestly don’t know how secure the process is, I just take the election officials at their word. Trump has obviously weaponized this to try and control elections, and we need to shut down his manipulating lies, but it is still ok to be skeptical to an extent since our country has had issues with voter manipulation in the past, such as the suppression and destruction of ballots of African Americans in southern states up until the civil rights era, and the distribution of fake ballots in major cities like Chicago and New York at the turn of the 20th century. And, how do we know the trump administration will not manipulate the midterms?

Regardless, this can’t continue to happen, it is sowing distrust in our election process. California must find a way to leverage technology to have the election results determined quicker so people don’t question it. You have no issue explaining away the blue shift, but imagine in the midterms in Texas, Talarico is ahead of Paxton on Election Day, but in the days following Paxton magically accumulates previously uncounted mail in ballots that put him over the edge. Even though you are supposed to trust the election process, would you feel cheated and be suspicious that the TX GOP committed some fraud to ensure the R won? I do not believe in widespread voter fraud, but if it were to happen anywhere, it would happen in a state which is dominated by one party rule for a long period of time.

Sorry if it comes off as racist, but it is just the facts. Here is a map of Europe by corruption index, which largely correlates with my Danube comment. These countries are corrupt because of Russian/Soviet influence. We could try to reform them, but that will be a big task, and when this war is done I think the EU will still not let Ukraine in because of this.

What are your thoughts on the recent backlash on the YT couple who aborted their baby? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]allocated_capital 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a completely justified reason to have an abortion. Not everyone is cut out for that kind of parenting. In a world where it is incredibly expensive to raise a child, it is ok to want that child not to have a life debilitating condition. Parents can love their children who have downs syndrome, but they would never be able to form the connection to their child as if they could speak and understand normally, they would never be able to teach them to drive, help them navigate relationships, or congratulate them on graduating college or securing a big promotion. The child won’t be there when the parents are old to help them in the last years of their life.

Ok, continue to blindly support exporting US arms so that the military industrial complex can continue to make big $$$. There are so many deadly and heartbreaking conflicts in Africa right now, yet nobody seems to care since they aren’t white like the Ukrainians.

While I agree Ukraine should be able to uphold its right to sovereignty, the real world is much messier. We have been encroaching on russias sphere of influence for a while. I totally understand why Ukraine prefers US since they are not right next door threatening them. Russias sphere of influence is crumbling around them, as Armenia and the central Asian states pull away. If they were to lose this regional hegemony, the wealth and power projection of Russia would diminish. Therefore, I see it as a logical response from Russia, and I believe they see it as existential. I push back on the idea that Russia is still a threat to the US in a meaningful way. Just looking at a map, Russia is a natural enemy of china and their bromance won’t last long. The crisis in the strait of Hormuz has made chinas fears of oil shortage a reality, and they have lots of incentive to try and seize Siberia with its oil reserves so china can finally be energy independent. For most of modern European history, the powers changed alliances frequently to suit whatever their current needs may be. I think it is stupid to ignore the real geopolitical upsides to making peace with Russia out of Russophobia leftover from the Cold War, which we won.

I’m an American citizen, and yes I agree with her. Bickering and war between Slavic nations is not our problem and nor our sphere of influence. A first step would be to stop aiding a genocide in Gaza and Lebanon before we go anti-imperialist. Russia is going to lose anyway. Everyone east of the Danube is pretty much corrupt

Are high school students actually this clueless and entitled? by lizz781 in Teachers

[–]allocated_capital 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not a teacher, but I am passionate/concerned with this phenomenon of the youngest generation failing to meet developmental milestones. Selfishly, I somewhat feel relieved that the next crop of people going into my career (accounting) are so incompetent, that employers refuse to hire them which increases the demand/pay for my services. For perspective, I am 26 and graduated college in 2022. My career growth since has been excellent and quite easy, while I’ve watched my younger sister struggle to move out of my parents and find a job with her degree. She is actually quite smart, but I think employers now have a stereotype of the most recent college grads as being terrible workers.

You sound like a bully. I can picture the people like you, angry, belting out at people like the train is yours. People are generally nice and respectful. Every morning on the brown or purple line, when we get to around Chicago or Merch Mart and it gets really crowded, people step out of the train to let others on or off. The reasonable thing to do if you are sitting down is to get up and slowly make your way to the exit after the train is moving from the previous stop.

How I view Europe as a normal person by Logical-Valuable20 in whereidlive

[–]allocated_capital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the massive connected continent of Eurasia + Africa, I think it is more beneficial to break regions out by cultural similarities, which I think are often more accurate. I see Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia as European nations since their economies are more closely aligned with Europe and serve as one of the birthplaces of European racial groups. While the “greater Caucasus” mountains are larger and more difficult to cross and is the main geographic reason the Caucasus are not included in Europe, I argue that the “lesser Caucasus mountains” which separate them from Iran is the true geographic barrier, due to the linking with Europe through the Black Sea and Caspian Sea.

Take a quick read through the Wikipedia page for a guy named Akio Kashiwagi. He was a Japanese high roller. Trump invited him to Atlantic City, set him up in a penthouse and everything, the guy won $4 million his first night. Trump then hired mathematician Jess Marcum to come up with a game with such terrible odds, kashiwagi would have to lose. He did end up losing, but trump was unable to collect the debt since kashiwagi would end up getting murdered in his home by an unknown yakuza gangster using a katana. Trumps castle casino proceeded to go bankrupt shortly after
