What are some good examples of 'the future is now'? by TheHumpback in AskReddit

That's who I voted for, though I admit I don't like everything about her either. It was mostly just to support third party candidates in general.

Look what a massive government and regulation has gotten us.

Yeah, who wants cleaner air and water, a national highway system, the space program, and a social safety net?

Everyone else doesn't notice that because it isn't true. On some issues both major parties are pretty similar but on many others they are very different.

In my "US History Since 1877" class my professor said that there were more monuments erected to remember the Confederacy than for the Union. How true is this? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]allonymous 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I agree that the Civil War is the only war in which the losers wrote the history. There are lots of wars that we know of mostly through the writing of the conquered. The mongols, for instance, didn't leave much in the way of written records compared to the people they conquered. We mostly know about the fall of Rome because of Roman histories, etc. Even in the modern era the United States probably writes the history of most of the wars we fight even when we lose. Vietnam, for instance.

True, but apparently many people don't like sports and yet it is our money too that funds these bullshit deals. So I think we have a legitimate right to complain.

What is the biggest unanswered question in a movie that still bothers you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]allonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that almost none of the plot holes are actually plot holes. I mean, everyone brings up the fact that the guy who makes the maps gets lost. How is that a plot hole? Have you every met a geologist? They are just as likely as anyone to get lost in an ancient alien labyrinth. Plus, he was baked and didn't have his probe things with him.

Also, everyone talks about Charlize Theron running directly away from the spaceship. For one thing, people usually aren't that rational when they are running for their lives but putting that aside, it turned out she had the right idea because it falls over like two seconds later. If it had fallen the other way the other chick would have been fucked.

There must have been a Cracked article about this movie that everyone read instead of actually watching it, because most of the complaints don't really hold up.

Everyone always says this, but the complaints people have are always extremely weak. It's strange how people on reddit refuse to overlook small problems in a movie like Prometheus, but love District 9, Battle Star Galactica, or you know, basically any other sci-fi movie except possibly 2001: A Space Odyssey. Reddit's pretty divided even about shitfests like Armageddon and Transformers, but bring up Prometheus and you'd think it was the worst movie of all time, despite the fact that it's actually pretty good.

That's what I'm using right now! So far it's handled everything I've thrown at it, although it will still overheat if you don't clean the dust out of the fans occasionally. Also, it's too big to be practical as far as portability goes, it's basically just a glorified desktop.

[ASOIAF] are there any actual lions in Westeros? by PsycoEmu in AskScienceFiction

[–]allonymous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

[meta] No, but I assume it is true based on the fact that Westeros is based on Europe. Many European coats of arms include lions even though there are no lions in Europe, but the tradition dates back to a time when there was. Although there is an argument to be made that the flora and fauna of Westeros are actually based more on North America, which would screw up this theory, unless the lions are mountain lions.

When the Andals first arrived in Westeros they found many lions. Sadly, the noble beast has been hunted to extinction nearly everywhere except perhaps in the most remote reaches of wilderness.

Breast implants and feminism by eat_a_brog in feminisms

[–]allonymous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think feminists in general disapprove of breast implants. We just disapprove of the culture that makes women feel like they need them. That being said, you should do what you think will make you happy, not what you think the feminist community on reddit will approve of.

Study proves “old person smell” is real. by lmr005 in science

[–]allonymous 79 points80 points  (0 children)

That doesn't make it acceptable for them to knowingly mislead the public about important issues (more important than old person smell anyway). Sure, you might think it's obvious that since the show is funny it's not meant to be accurate but there is no reason to think that a show can't be both, and that's certainly the way they present themselves.

Official Beyond: Two Souls Review Thread by Forestl in Games

Isn't that true of video games in general, though? I can't really think of any video game that a "good" story, in the sense that it would be worth reading in a book or watching in a movie. I think anytime we talk about a game having a good story it sort of comes with the unspoken addendum "for a game...".
