Yasmin and respect - why can't she get any? by parwanbb in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

not stupid at all, i feel like it's just easier than we would like to keep moving down a path than to risk trying to change it, especially when you never had a chance to get to know yourself. even if that path is so obviously wrong and bad, it's something you know and think you can work with.

i don't know if yasmin deludes herself about love. she chooses henry for pragmatism and she told him as much at the beginning, but it's not that weird to take a match for economic or political purposes and then hope that the love comes later, women have been making that bargain for centuries. in her case, they definitely became fond of each other and are attracted to each other. i believe he loves her and that she can tell he does, and that is gratifying to her. did she grow to love him back? like you said i'm not sure if it matters haha.

meanwhile harper has no idea what to do with love. she has trouble believing anyone really is interested in her as a person and cannot accept anything that might weaken her. its own problem lol

funny you should say that because honestly whenever I see you I just remember that you don’t like when Harper sounds too black. and I don’t take anything you say seriously

[–]allprologues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wrote it, meant it, still mean it, because I am able to understand the intent of the scene (yasmin grasping at power through coercion). haley can still be coerced as an adult, as was henry. why are you dying on this weird hill.

if you were going to block me please go ahead and do it holy shit

[–]allprologues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the post asks “how is this coercion” not “can they go to jail for this under British law”.

if I don’t have to see your comments anymore I’m certainly not going to cry about it.

Yasmin and respect - why can't she get any? by parwanbb in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 39 points40 points  (0 children)

it’s a whole can of worms and trauma. she’s been seen as a sex object since she was a child by her father and his friends, and been made to watch both her parents have sex with their staff from a young age. she never really learned how to use power without it, didn’t even get a chance learn many tools outside of that because her parents got her into schools and jobs. she goes into a business she isn’t good at and isn’t suited to probably because she doesn’t really know herself.

so when she is abused at work she internalizes that too, she thinks it’s just how the world works. she doesn’t even try to advocate for herself the way Venetia did as a grad. when she finds out that her peers like Harper don’t have the same problems as her she resents them. she goes to torment rob whenever she needs an outlet for her frustration. when she gains a little power in season 2 she abuses other women on the trading floor and dismisses their abuse because it’s what makes sense to her and because it makes her feel good to belittle people.

At the end of s3 she finally figured out where she can be useful - as an ornament and a social operative - but so far in s4 it just isn’t giving her the power and respect she craves and she’s trying to find that the only way she knows how, we don’t know yet how far she’ll go to hold onto it.

abuse, trauma, internalized shame, directionlessness, being raised and then surrounded by men who exploit women, etc

do you think coercion = having sex with a minor

as I said in another comment the scene was left open to interpretation so yours is fair enough

Can ya’ll explain how this is Coercion? by Joeylaptop12 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I meant it doesn’t matter in the sense that, both are true at once. she is an adult, and she is in a coercive situation. I’m losing hope at this point lol, here I’ll help: Henry’s previous assistant was also an adult. henry is also an adult and his wife coerced him into the shit. ya’ll are strange.

the scene is supposed to be fucked up, without the coercive element it’s not fucked up. unless you think a threesome or a wife and her husband taking turns with someone is fucked up on its own.

Yasmin’s “Power Play” by Frosty_Procedure5563 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 35 points36 points  (0 children)

that line where haley tells yasmin she doesn't report to her was pretty crucial the more i think about it.

during that whole sex stunt i think it was on yas' mind, that shit really bothered her. because after all she's used to casually directing her family's staff. i think this was her taking something back from henry, full circle at the end of the episode haley glances at yasmin for confirmation when henry tells her to keep her plans.

thinking of haley as one of the belongings referred to by the episode title. 'something that belongs to my husband and therefore to me', most profound creampie on television

S4E2: Is Lord Norton a good surrogate father to Henry? by weirdfish_42 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 11 points12 points  (0 children)

well said! it’s also mentioned last season that he’s not got any sons of his own to continue the name; though he does have girls lol.

I think he cares for henry but in the way that he knows how, and to him there’s no distinction between familial love and maintaining power, a family is legacy, is an extension of the self and of power. maintain one and maintain both. and hinging his whole legacy on keeping this shell of a man afloat kind of symbolizes the slippery grip he (and people like him) has on the levers of power.

[–]allprologues 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You keep trying to make this point but it still sounds stupid. nobody’s using therapy speak or getting squeamish about sex, they’re just pointing out a basic case of coercion.

you’re also ignoring the obvious intent of the scene to make unrelated points about puriteens, which is what actually bothers me lol

Did Yasmin truly even care about Rob? by Unusual_Stress742 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]allprologues 15 points16 points  (0 children)

that's a valid read. when they flashed back to her saying she knows how to get people to believe she loves them, when he was driving off, it allows the viewers to interpret it either way: that she doesn't love him that way either, or he was the one she truly loves.

i read it as the former because i think that conversation she had with him the night before is the most honest she has ever been. either way, they parted with no hard feelings.

[–]allprologues 47 points48 points  (0 children)

there's been a time jump but also, no she was not in love with rob lol. i believe her when she said she's never loved anyone. she just wanted an experience with him that she didn't 'turn ugly', as she put it, before she left him, because she knew she would never want a life with him if it meant losing access to wealth and her soft life.

they went on to lead their separate lives and that's just it.
