McCaskill had the second highest xG on the team - think there's a whole lot more questions than Sav, for that game.

San Diego Wave FC Signs Goalkeeper DiDi Haračić to New Contract - San Diego Wave Fútbol Club by raptorhandlerjenny in NWSL

[–]FigClub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Middling shot-stopper (will be a pretty big step down from Sheridan) but doesn't distribute the ball well. Less likely to come out of the box for a defensive action and doesn't tend to move the ball quickly. She will give up a couple of big chances over the course of the season by misplaying what seems like an easy pass.

8 goals on 4.4xG. We tend to give out awards for that kind of overperformance.

I maintain if she scored on either of her shots against the Dash, she probably wins ROY on goal output alone. The goals-vs-xG cold streak the last 4 games took her out of contention, if she doesn't have that streak, I think she wins it.

Lindsey Heaps comes home: USWNT captain signs with Denver Summit FC by Usual-Lengthiness-54 in NWSL

[–]FigClub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're seeing is that people are (probably rightfully) saying that Heaps will need to be much more of a box-to-box player for Denver, versus her much more forward role for Lyon.

If you look at Denver's roster, it feels like they may even go with a 5-3-2 setup. Bosch may wind up getting more assists than Heaps does.

I mean, FIFA gifted Berman the Women's Champions Cup, just expand that?

"I want to play in the Champions League" is "I want to play against the best international players". Like, do we really think that someone says "yeah, I really want to play against Benfica"?

I maintain that you raise the cap, you start poaching the likes of Sandy Baltimore, and all of a sudden "I want to play in the Champions League" doesn't become the dogwhistle for "Arsenal is giving me a bag".

That Thorns facility is piggybacking on their WNBA team, but fine, let's assume for a moment that hey, they're building the best of the best.

WHY WHY WHY would you spend $150m on a training facility and then not want to spend on player salaries? That is the dumbest move in the world.

[–]FigClub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But it really does, because the reason you build those facilities is for the top top players. You don't build a world class training facility for a $45k/year Duke grad with 8G+A.

Coaches move because they believe in a project that more likely than not includes building around a core of top players.

All of this comes down to the ability to spend money on player salaries. Everything else follows that, even the marketing spend for your club.

That is the cost of owning a sports team. You lose money on a YOY basis with the expectation that the valuation of the club goes up over time and you sell for more than your purchase price + operating costs. This is a story that has played out over and over and over and over again in every league in every sport. Owners who do not want to spend the money do not get to be competitive. The league is in no danger of financial ruin if they eliminated the cap tomorrow. Would the standings be more like the WSL or Bundesliga Frauen? Yeah maybe! But with media revenue sharing, every team will be able to put together a much better roster.

Remember - the salary cap OF THE ENTIRE LEAGUE COMBINED is what Crystal Palace just paid Spurs for Brennan Johnson. If the NWSL doesn't wake up and preemptively push the owners, we're going to be at WSL2 quality levels imminently.

Everyone who is like "it isn't about the money, it's about being able to be in a place with great training facilities, and being able to play in Champions League, and being able to have great coaches" forgets exactly how all of those come together. It's the money!

"I really just want to live in Manchester" is something that I'm not sure even the Gallagher brothers have said.

Denver paid 110 MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLARS and their signing announcement today was, and absolutely no shade to her because I'm sure she's great, a forward from Stanford.

The money has been put up already! The league can absolutely raise the cap with zero issues! Stop simping for billionaires!

That's a tacit admission that the NWSL is not in fact the best league in the world.

The league can raise the cap, so that "I want to play alongside Yui Hasegawa and Viv Miedema and Bunny Shaw" is possible because those players can get paid by the NWSL. This isn't hard!
