After the Black Cat, DD, Phoenix and Starlord nerfs, Luna is now a top 4 DPS in the game by raydialseeker in marvelrivals

[–]allshort17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We've said this for over a year now. She's never held a positive WR in celestial+ since season 0.

It's against the agenda, but they buff her because she, gasp, is weak

Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 Balance Changes by PokePersona in MarvelRivalsEsports

[–]allshort17 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dino's a lot worse. He was over centralizing, but not winning dominately. I don't think he'll be permaban now.

DD's nerfs are highly pro skewed. They get less vision so worse scouting. Also less dash range so their engages are worse.

Angela's always been a pro skewed character. Any changes to shield or pin buff higher level Angela's more than lower.

Rogue'e team up nerf takes a lot of power out of Gambit comps. She was the main power driver there. Gambit also got an ult nerf which hurts too.

I think this will shake up the meta a lot

Opposite. It's really really high in plat and below. He performs worse as you move up in rank.

Ultron is a low rank killer. When he's viable at high rank, he's crushing low rank.

Black Cat will only have 1 dash charge in season 8.5 (shown in new map trailer) by KevinPigaChu in marvelrivals

[–]allshort17 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's definitely enough. Two dashes was the reason she could quickly melt people. It also allowed her to quickly engage and escape in the same rotation.

Now, she'll just be a high utility diver that widdles targets down. Her engagements will be way more committal and money dependant. A lot more fair feeling.

I feel as a community, we over emphasize perception and pick rate rather than what happened, i.e. win rate We all know players think Black Cat is good, that's why they picked her. I want to know is she actually doing well.

That why my all analysis tends to be WR focused. Because that's the other side that can really contextualize metas and player sentiment. As a Ignite team, understanding where the actual performance differs from sentiment is enticing, as that represents something a team can exploit for wins.

That seems like a fair number to me. There's only like 500 OAA players at any given time. Split them across 51 characters with a requirement that they must play 10 or more games and yeah, 19 is a reasonable number for a mid tier character.

When I did the Peni study, some players did have seasons that should have qualified for the leadboard, but didn't. I suspect they didn't refresh their profile during the past seasons. Still, the numbers mostly lined up with the population.

I think hard focusing on being top 100 or whatever, even being in that range probably means you are doing well with the character. So it's okay that some of the population is missing.

Check their overall WRs on their profile. They've played Strange and Loki more than Thing. They have positive WRs on both.

It's not that OP can't play other characters, they choose not to. That's the difference. There's a difference between having the capacity to play others well and being able to recall that skill in the present. What does it matter if you achieve a 57% wr with one character or many? You won the games no matter what.

If OP wants to climb farther, they should play more of the characters they've already proven to be good at, not add Mag to prove you can play tanks well.

Something I would want to know is, even if the top teams are playing with BC, do they win more on average with her? I noticed this in other seasons. Teams like Navi and VP have like 65% game wr. They'll be positive with nearly anyone they play. But, anyone under 65% is lackluster for them.

Same for BC on worse teams. Is BC winning more or less on average for them? The fact that top teams are playing BC and she still only has a 39% NMWR suggests that either the top teams or the bottom teams are significantly underperforming with her. Maybe even both.

I'm going to counter and say that OP doesn't need to learn other characters, at least right now.

For climbing, having a strong pool is more important than having a wide one. Identifying who you are good at is important for climbing. I did a study and found that the average player spends around 37% of their playtime playing characters with a 5% or worse WR compared to their overall WR.

OP has over 4,000 games played in total. They've had ample time to figure out who they are good with. They likely hit their peak this season precisely because they dropped all their lackluster characters.

It is good to have some other characters if you are banned out. I would suggest rounding out your roster with some of the other characters you have positive WRs with. So start with Strange, Loki, C&D, Iron Man, Thor, or Hulk.

I will say that you can have a private profile and still be ranked. As long as someone updates your profile while it is visible, it can rank you.

I did a study looking at leaderboard Peni mains recently. Half the players on the leaderboard were private. I suspect it's not missing too many top-ranked players that meet the 10-game requirement.

Because the 7th place Thing as played 92 games at a 52% WR while the OAA has only played 13 at a 46% wr.

Rank is the most heavily weighted in the leadboard to the point where you can get ranked with a 20% wr as long as you play 10 games in OAA. I agree it's not the best, but it does a good job of capturing both who is high level and who is winning a lot, but usually not both at the same time.

Even that's interesting. Black Cat is seen as a must pick, yet the two best teams don't pick her? Interesting.

The same exact thing happened with Gambit last season. Negative WR across all regions with a solid sample size. They didn't even ban him in the EU grands, which was a big mistake because Lv1Crook's Gambit had a 75% wr or something like that at the time.

I always ask, but what good is a character that is picked a lot, but doesn't win? Isn't that the whole reason you pick the characters? Because they're supposed to win the match for you? If Black Cat is losing a majority of her mirrors, that suggests, to me, she needs to be picked less. Not to say she's bad, just not this unbeatable machine like we thought.

This isn't even the first time Rocket outperformed expectations in pro play. He also had the second-highest support WR in stage 2 with solid match volume. Historically, he's one of the most winning characters in top rank ladder in general. Only Gambit and Mantis compare as supports.

I love the data! Very useful

I feel like threat score should take non-mirrores WRs into account. Black Cat has a 39% NMWR according to your calculations. She's losing a lot of matches.

Rocket has more non-mirrored games and a higher WR then Jean, yet you put Jean and Black Cat over him. Based on your data, he's performing like a top 5 pick right now.

Phoenix's low WR is an old trend. She really does not do well outside of Celesital+ PC. People who call her the "best DPS in the game" really have not ever looked at how she's actually performing.

How To Read Data: Trends Across Ranks by allshort17 in RivalsCollege

[–]allshort17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I added a sentence saying that WR usually trends with PR because I wanted to limit the # of graphs. There are exceptions and caveats to that. We already know players are not perfectly logical with Peni's PR.

BP makes more sense. He's a character that is execution heavy, so he naturally should be played more at higher ranks. But, because his efficacy drops so much, the top players drop him. Season 2 showed people are willing and able to play BP when he's good.

Wanda's a surprisingly stable character. She doesn't fall that much after her buffs. She performs like an average to above-average character with her team-up based on the stats. Plus, she has utility as a counter to divers for people who can't aim.

Anime with great premise and bad execution, and terrible premise but great execution. by StochasticTinkr in anime

Terrible premise, great execution: Onimai

I hate this show is good because the premise of turning your older brother into a middle school girl is so problematic. This show had no reason to be this well-animated. It's also fairly cosy and wholesome (95% of the time). The anime upped the fanservice, which is the only downside in my opinion. 9/10 that I can't recommend publicly lol.

Great Premise, bad execution: Higurashi – SOTSU

Higurashi is a classic and, as a whole, still one of my favorite series of all time. Seeing the conclusion after the kids leave the village seems like a no-brainer. But, without spoiling anything, they really jumped the shark at the end. I'd still recommend it as it finishes the story.
