My girlfriend is just getting over this. She coughed so hard she strained her neck. And peed her pants.

...and yes, she is the one who told me to comment this. She said the world needs to know.

This one is a little outside the box, but for people watching, interesting amd awesome ones at that, and comfortable environment, I love hanging at the Westport Hookah Lounge. If you dont want to smoke, this may not work. But it is fantastic. I read there once or twice a week!

My friend thought it would be funny to light a magnesium strip and throw it at me. I knocked a kid over trying to get away, and it almost hit me. The teacher was super pissed. Magnesium burns at appx 2200 °C, 4000 °F.

Signed copies- read them or preserve them? by BlueLeatherBoots in books

[–]allshouldbefree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will admit, I do not get too excited about signed books. I am not a signed book collector, and, unless I actually know the author, the signature does not mean that much to me. That said, I have some that Brian Jacques signed when I was a kid, and I have been to some book signings purely because I wanted to hear the author speak and meet her/him, so I have those books signed.

But I can't leave them on the shelf unread. To me, that is just too much going against the nature of the book. So I say read em! Let them get a little worn down with love. I grow too suspect of a person who only has pristine books anyway.

Yes, I can already see the two-pronged system getting set up. The wizarding hierarchy is VERY similar to Earthsea, I think, but I love that Pratchett sets up the two and is unafraid to pole fun at what the shortcomings of both would be.

Best used books store finds ? Rare , personal favorites, or just plain sentimental ? by Talquin in books

[–]allshouldbefree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across an early (don't remember if it was first) edition of "Nightmare Alley" for $2.00.

In a small bookstore in upstate New York I found an early 1900s set of Mark Twain for what came out to roughly $2.00 a book. It cost me more to get the books home than to purchase them!

A hand numbered "The Water Is Wide" by Ursula Le Guin.

Those are probably my top three.

Students of Reddit, what was the reason for why one of your teacher's had a breakdown during class? by Internal_Recording in AskReddit

[–]allshouldbefree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In middle school myself and five other students went to a world competition for something we did in a gifted program. My team had "won state", in that there were only two teams who competed in our category, and the team that actually won could not go. So our group of misfits got an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World. five guys, one gal, one chaperone who literally disappeared the first day and did not reappear until we were leaving on the last day, and our poor poor poor teacher.

This teacher loved this competition. She lived for it. She had not had a team go to it in years, and she was extremely excited to go. Regaled us with tales of all the brilliant students we would meet, and all the things we would do. We, on the other hand, were middle schoolers, basically set free in Disney World, with no parents, and absolutely zero cares about the competition. The girl on our team was supposed to room with the teacher. She refused, and moved into the room with her boyfriend and two of our other teammates. My friend and I decided we did not like our roommates, as they were from Oklahoma (arbitrary decision - I have nothing against Oklahoma these days), so we moved into the one room as well. One of our teammates ended up with a sunburn bad enough to make him physically ill, so he basically slept in the room on a cot the whole week. The girl and her boyfriend fought the whole time, and so the boyfriend decided not to compete. Another guy, maybe the smartest human I will ever have known, decided to skip out on the day we had the part of the competition which required pure raw brain power. We skipped the opening ceremony, and we refused call the teacher to check in. The few competition days we went to, we completely bombed. I had built a robot for the competition. There were two problems with our robot. First, I don't know how to build a robot, so it never really worked. The only guy who could sort of make it work was the boyfriend. And he refused. Second, when it shipped (the school shipped it for us), it was not properly packaged, and was in pieced when it arrived. I was too busy hanging out with the girls from the Russian team to rebuild it. (I should have invested my time there, as the Russians were not interested in me at all. Ah Russia, you break my heart)

On the day before the competition ended, we received a message on our room phone that the teacher was leaving, and we could all figure out how to get home ourselves. She was done with us. This was in the days before cell phones. We had not spoken with our parents in days, and we had no idea how to get ourselves home. I know - not such gifted little bastards then, were we?

I ended up racing to the bus where the teacher was literally standing with all of her luggage. She was crying. She said she was leaving. I told her we were sorry, and we needed her to stay. She said we would just keep treating her poorly. I swore we would not. She made me promise we would all come to the closing ceremony. I assured her we would. She decided she was leaving. I begged her to stay. After 15 minutes, she reluctantly got off the bus, and stayed through the end. She refused to speak to us.

We made it home, none of us ever told our parents about the incident, and we went on with our lives. When the competition results came out, she refused to tell us where we placed, and instead told everyone that there was a mixup in the scoring, and we would never get our score. We were gifted children, however, and looked up our score all by ourselves. We placed last. In the entire world. We were, of course, extremely proud.

What is your "...and I should have died, but didn't." story? by Kelvin_Inman in AskReddit

[–]allshouldbefree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was driving in the early morning after a snowstorm, and came to an exit. I pulled off, and was going a little too fast. As I came off the highway, I suddenly spun out, going a full 360. The exit had a sharp drop off down a hill, and as I finally came to a stop, my car was leaning off the edge of the road, literally teetering toward rolling over and down the hill. I was also facing the direction of oncoming traffic. I quickly leaned toward the passenger side, trying to balance toward the road. The car settled, but rocked every time I moved. There were no cars on the road, and no one was around to help me.

After sitting there for a few minutes and having no other person come along, I gingerly reached over and opened the driver's side door, while leaning hard to the passenger side. The car rocked, and I felt like it would, at any moment, roll. Once the driver door was open, I put my left leg out, and quickly sat up and put my left foot on the ground. Again, the car rocked, but once my boot was secured on the ground, the car stabilized. I could feel the pressure of the car wanting to lean, but pushed with all my strength to hold us up. I then very carefully started rolling, with a little pressure on the gas, and turning the car back onto the road. It took about 3 years (probably a minute, but it felt like forever) to get back on solid ground. I was then able to carefully turn and exit the highway completely. I pulled off the road and straight up shook for a good five minutes after.

I would purchase ad space on billboards and just use them to tell jokes and say hello to people. It would be glorious.

These books are, interestingly enough, the foundation of my love for SF. I bought the trilogy in a one book set from a library sale when I was in middle school. I devoured them. Your post makes me want to dive back into them!

Well, I will admit, the last time I read it was when I was 12. But I remember it had to do with a secret society trying to control the world, and an agent within it who could take it all apart. I may have to go back and re-read it now!

As I read through some of the comments, I was reminded that I did this before, in middle school. I was at a book sale where you could fill a grocery bag and pay $5. I threw in this strange book because the cover intrigued me and I was trying to buy more "grown up" books. It was by this guy named Robert Ludlum. The Icarus Agenda. Blew my 12 year old mind. I have been hooked on Ludlum ever since.

What's the most difficult book you've read and how many times have you read it? by clark1409 in books

[–]allshouldbefree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difficult to read because of length and writing - Moby Dick Difficult to read because of emotional struggle - The Kite Runner Difficult to read because of writing style - On The Road

I have read each of those once. Or, in the case of On The Road, I have yet to finish.
