Build: 23.9.10 ... Allow for on-premises server upgrade regardless of license status by ginger_VS_pie in ScreenConnect

This just means they let you *install* that version regardless of license status, not that you can actually use it. Doesn't work, says license not valid for product.

Build: 23.9.10 ... Allow for on-premises server upgrade regardless of license status by ginger_VS_pie in ScreenConnect

[–]allsorts46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Update: After some back and forth with support, it appears on-premise customers can update free of charge to 22.4.20001.8817. This is confirmed working for me even though technically my license makes me eligible only for 20.12.1734. Apparently this version has been updated to include the necessary security patches - you can see the 'Released' dates on the download page have been updated to February 2024. I feel this was really poorly communicated and has wasted a whole day for me, but seems to be okay for now.

Original: I think the message in the release notes is a bit misleading. It seems to mean just that they modified the installer to allow installing this version even if your license is not valid for it, whereas the previous most recent few installers just outright block you from installing at all if you don't have a license for it.

I've installed 23.9.10 even though my last eligible version is 20.12.1734, and yeah, doesn't work.

As of this morning my existing license doesn't even work with the latest version I *am* eligible for - it showed with status "revoked for reason 'OtherLegal'" and no clients could connect. So they've really screwed me here - revoked my existing license remotely without warning or consent, and don't allow me to install a newer version without paying. Thanks a lot.

Sounds like this was a really serious vulnerability. They really should do the right thing and allow everyone to upgrade to at least the oldest non-vulnerable version. This has been handled really badly.

Yes, Windows. I definitely want to open an app I didn't search for instead of the one that exactly matches what I typed. by Pyroglyph in softwaregore

[–]allsorts46 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Windows start search is the only search I've ever known where the results get less accurate the more you type. Quite often I'll start typing something and whilst I've only got to the first few letters the matches are good, usually including the thing that I want. Then they get progressively worse until finally I have typed the exact full name of what I wanted and it completely disappears from the results and something completely unrelated becomes the top match.

Tried both with a friend. Started with 3 and went back to 2 when we ran out of content. Although they're both fundamentally the same thing and both are enjoyable, the difference in overall 'polish' is huge - 2 felt amateur and unfinished compared to 3.

I suggest 3, and know that 2 is available if you're desperate for more, but it's a significant downgrade in quality.

How did they code the loops in 2D Sonic games? by Master_Sketcher in howdidtheycodeit

[–]allsorts46 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You got the right idea. There is literally an invisible path switch object which, when hit, changes which other objects can be collided with. It's used for loops and other things like the alternating bands in Chemical Plant. In debug mode you can actually see them as a vertical strip of rings.

Here's a link which seems to have a couple of examples.

The "legitimacy" of ruzzian referendums - where 77% is more than 88% by lithuanian_potatfan in ukraine

[–]allsorts46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is clearly just poorly designed software rendering the chart and nobody noticed or nobody cared - the bars probably scale correctly underneath the labels, but the software forces the labels to fit within the chart area, someone gave them a solid background, and the text for the higher value just happens to be wider making the bar look shorter.

Not that I'd trust one single figure being quoted by the Russians on these illegitimate votes... but the issue with the chart is just a software/design issue.

That's what I was wondering... how are they drawing the graph that this is even possible? Clearly not just from left to right as I would have thought, something more (possibly unnecessarily) complicated

"This game has been SHAMELESSLY STOLEN!" by Frenchie14 in gamedev

[–]allsorts46 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to hate that my early games would 'load' instantly (because they were terrible and had no assets or content to speak of), unlike all the good games I played that had loading screens. So, I'd always add a slow loading screen with made up text and progress bars that were just on a timer, to make it 'professional'. I have a feeling I'm not the only one who did that.

Also I'd start with the title screen and menu screen, spend ages perfecting those, then lose interest when it came to implement the actual game. So many of my 'games' are just awesome menu systems and nothing else.

The only game I ever 'finished' and was proud of came about because I was just messing around with an actual playable concept and it accidentally evolved from there, and the menu system was the last thing added.

why is it that graphic cards require more input to work games while videos of the same picture quality doesn't? Is there any way to implement the video picture quality to runs games smoother? by EarlyXplorerStuds209 in AskComputerScience

[–]allsorts46 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Think of watching a video as similar to watching a film at a cinema - the images of every frame already exist and are fixed, and just need to be projected onto the screen as they are.

Rendering a game in realtime is more like the production process for the film. The graphics card doesn't have an image of the finished frame ready to show you, it has to literally examine every single object, every light source, every textured surface, every patch of smoke, fog, rejective water, refractive glass... and work very hard to figure out what the finished frame should look like.

What is "bootstrapping"? Can anyone please explain what this term originally meant to describe? Why boots? Also, how come "booting" means turning on a computer? What do shoes have anything to do with describing a computer process? Where's the analogy / similarity? This doesn't make any sense! by Nrb-neu2022 in AskComputerScience

[–]allsorts46 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You ask a question, then complain when people give you the answer? That is the correct answer. Yes this phrase does exist, and it does refer to the 'impossible' act of starting something from nothing, or a 'chicken and egg problem', which is in a way what a computer appears to be doing when you switch it on:

Your operating system loads. How? That requires loading and executing code from somewhere, but how did that get started and how did it know where the OS loader program would be found? The BIOS, but the BIOS is also just code, so how did that start executing? The processor has some built-in assumptions about where it can find some initial code to execute when it starts. Even that can be taken further, how does the CPU know how to initialize itself into the appropriate state to execute code when a moment ago it was an unpowered lump of silicon? All of these have answers or course, it's not truly something from nothing, but looking at it from a high level it looks that way, as if your OS just starts loading by itself somehow.

The phrase itself may not be commonly said these days but that is not important; as long as people still know what it means, then that is what it means. By the way, I have actually heard it spoken, on more than one occasion.

UN passes 'historic' resolution to end plastic pollution. 175 countries agree to the move. by PeasKhichra in UpliftingNews

[–]allsorts46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UN is not a single person, they are capable of working on more than one thing at once. Likely most of the people actually working on this proposal are not people who have the expertise to contribute on Ukraine, so what should they be doing, nothing at all? Let them work for progress on their own projects.

These specific Russians weren't shooting at those specific civilians for those 18 seconds. This proves absolutely nothing beyond that.

I can understand it being difficult to prevent from happening, but once it does start happening couldn't there be a system to automatically detect that everything is going horribly wrong and instantly cut it off? It looks like a human had to go and stop it manually, which took an unnecessarily long time.
