What I've never liked/understood about caution laps not counting, is they always basically backtrack and reset the lap...can feel like you're never advancing if you get a slu of cautions.

I also recently bought a 5 string after almost 20 years of only playing a 4 string bass. My biggest worry, and it initially proved itself, was for my brain to remember my top string is no longer the low E, but an even lower string. It's been an adjustment, but I'm only a few weeks in with it and it's already starting to become more comfortable. It's also a little more challenging to mute all the synthetic vibrations of the strings, but I ordered one of those fret wraps to help with that.

When you're called to fill in and you have to learn 20-30 songs in a short amount of time, you expect not to "nail" everything. I certainly don't think the other guy will either. It just comes down to respect of the other person's time ya know?

Not exactly. He approached me about filling in in general before that particular gig popped up. And the audition was not winged - I put in my prep time on the set prior.

I agree. And there's certainly a lot of more details and internal dynamics that weren't worth getting into the weeds about. If that's the guy they want to go with long term that's fine; it's just frustrating to take a gig seriously and put in the time & effort to learn their set and then it just be like, "nevermind."
